Our property is overrun with an invasive tree, commonly known as the Popcorn Tree. I have declared war on these guys (or gals?). Last year I made a start by digging them up with the mini hoe, a big mistake. Pulling up the tree leaves lots of broken roots that all start new trees. This year I have been cutting them down and coating the stumps with poison. Using this method and the "chop and squirt" method I am on a mission to remove all existing popcorn trees for our acreage. Can I do it? Well maybe not all of them, but enough so that they no longer will affect the future ecology of our woods. I am confident I can do that.

Geez Barry, you post so much stuff that parallels my life. My 4 gallon backpacker is full of Crossroads and I'm trying to eradicate Multiflora Rose, Autumn Olive, Oriental Bittersweet vine, and the fairly new invasive Porcelain Berry. None are conducive to slash and treat so it's walking the hillsides and spraying. Three full trips and my legs are worn out. It's a never ending battle.

The battle is a challenge for sure. Our weather finally cooled off a bit so I almost enjoy heading out there. At least for the first little while.

Hey Barry, try putting some sort of lashing between you're sprayer shoulder straps, you won't spend all that time fighting them, and they won't fall off of your shoulders. From a guy that carried them way more than I ever wanted too!

Thanks Paul! After filming those clips I have now shortened the shoulder straps and the problem mostly went away. I will try your suggestion also. Thanks Barry

That's a heck of a job you have there. We hate those fire ants. At least once a year I get nailed. By the time you feel that first bite, it's to late--lol.

Keep up the good work! The popcorn trees have ridiculous root systems. The roots will extend 100s of feet from the trunk of a 5yr to 10yr old tree. Very stupidly of me 40yrs ago I brought 2 trees from my Mom's house to my 10 acres for quick shade and ornamental popcorn qualities. 40yrs later they've taken root everywhere. Where did you get the poison to spray? And is it doing what it's supposed to do? The wood from the tree is just about as hard to get to burn as the tree is to get rid of!

Mack The Pasture Guard came from a local farmer’s CoOp. I have been very reliable so far. I was using a chemical from Home Depot that is used full strength and have had several stumps resprout and it was much less economical. It is fast growing wood, fairly soft and will a high moisture content. Once it has been down for a year or so it burns fast with not much heat output. Thanks for the comment Barry

Hi Barry, I / we used to drive copper nail into trees we wanted to die, even rusty iron nail worked, you think it would work on the Chinese tree “friends”

Albert Interesting thought. I am a little bit skeptical of the rusty nail bit as every other tree down the highway has had a sign on two nailed to it over the years and sawmills routinely dull blades on hidden rusty nails. But the copper nail method sounds interesting! I will give it a try and see what happens. Thanks Barry

@@barrylukebuilds7894 with an iron nail it is supposed to go through the sap ring, with a pine tree it works for sure, when my neighbors moved I took my chance..

You'll never be without things to do on that property! Goodness sake. Why don't you wear some gloves while you're out there? I'm not one to be the 'KZfaq safety nazi', I weld in flip flops, but I'm not a fan of all of the pokey, itchy, bitey things out in the woods.

Benjamin You are correct, always something to do but unlike at home I can choose if I want to tackle a project or not. At home if the grass needs cutting, I have to cut the grass. I do normally wear gloves except when messing around with the camera. Thanks Barry
