Not Chinese but Thai, this is so accurate in my school ( we have some classes in English). The Western teachers are so chill. And the Thai teachers are strict. The one thing that the Western teachers can do to make students shut up is say "I'm going to call in a Thai teacher" or "I'm telling your homeroom teacher about this".

And people think that disrespect to elder, teacher is something that will pass after the youth pase come to working/adult phase. Nope. It something that widely happened in my country and the people in the workforce they has lower responsibility, more lazy, than people in vietnam, thai, china.. Its just a fact.

Actually, not every western teacher is like this. It depends on the country... Remember that USA does NOT represent every western country

@@lindamortara2354 haha, I think I have a few teachers from the USA. But some of them are from Australia. Some are from the Philippines. The Filipino teachers are also strict lol. still not strict as the Thai teachers tho.

Thai classrooms are far from being Lands of Smiles.
As a middle school teacher in America, I thought this portrayal was spot on, at least for the western teacher anyways. I feel so bad giving my students homework, but it's only ever one page, any more than that and mutiny would erupt. Also, we're taught by our administration to only emphasize the positive, we actually get in a lot of trouble if we say negative things to the students. God forbid you call a student stupid. Parents would file a report on you so fast. And if a student got a C, then that just means they have more to improve on next time! Yay for highly theoretical optimism! For the Chinese teacher, I'm assuming by the comments that it's pretty accurate. TL;DR-This is was a pretty legitimate representation of western teachers :P
@januwxlf1774 жыл бұрын
I wish I lived in the West... Here if the teacher called us stupid, no one would believe us and we would get scolded. But it's not like they actually called us stupid. It's more like they need you to focus on the details more than the actual class, then ridicule you for not paying attention. We wake up at 6:00 am in the morning, what do you expect? We can't even concentrate on a fly that's been buzzing around the cramped room full of students and closed windows(they never let us turn on the air con even if the students are literally panting).
@angielam60143 жыл бұрын
U guys really call the student stupid in China? It’s offensive... I don’t think it’s acceptable worldwide Point out the student’s mistakes and provide suggestions to make an improvement. The student can never know what to do if you just insult them
@theboogeyman25903 жыл бұрын
Why can’t my teachers feel bad about giving us homework?
@Appleeater01153 жыл бұрын
As someone who had experienced both Chinese and American teachers in primary and secondary education, I'd say I actually really liked stern teachers (given that they are unbiased and competent). In fact, all the teachers that I had fond memories of are of this type. When I was a student, I didn't mind scolding from a teacher. I actually preferred them doing that instead of comforting me when I got bad grades. I feel "easiness" sometimes undermines the value of praises from a teacher, and thus the effectiveness of positive reinforcement. I'm not saying that it is acceptable to insult students, just that frankness may be something students will appreciate.

I remember they( chinese teachers) would make us stand in front extend our arms palms up. And would smack our palms with ruler. And after they done they just make u stand there for the remainder of the class. Anyone has same experience?
A full grade in china is out of 150 points, so he got a 77% 😂
@user-em3bs1wj8q5 жыл бұрын
Actually it depends on the grade you are. For a senior high school it is the case as you said. While for junior high school, the full grade of English is typically 120. I've checked this fact with my nephew.
@hazelll224 жыл бұрын
And it depends on the place you are in and the kind of exam you're taking. If you're in senior high school and have the English test with full grade being 120, I wouldn't be surprised.

For Western teaching, I would say it’s accurate aside from the homework part. Most people I know, including myself, are given more than one worksheet for homework. We take a minimum of six different classes in high school. We can have more than three sheets of homework per class a day. If you were to multiply that by six, it’s still quite a bit of work. Even my friend in Canada was required to take more than six classes and had additional practice added on as homework.

@zlz955 жыл бұрын
Actually none of us students are butthurt, we agree with this video very much. But we can't do much to change that. It's just the pattern of Chinese education system. It's sad that you were criticized for being a western-style teacher, but if you teach in China, I guess you can just accept that. Sad but things won't change.
@philclarke36605 жыл бұрын
what I meant by butthurt is people who claim it's offensive or prejudiced and biased. Stereotypes exist for a reason. And I was born and raised in China so I'm quite aware that this most of this is just part of the culture/education system, with the emphasis being mostly on passing exams. One new requirement my school gave me this semester is that I have to make all my students write down stuff so they have something to show their parents, even though their parents would likely be clueless about it anyway.

@2:43 "Just memorize some good essays! and use the sentences from the essays you memorized!" I often proofread and edit my Chinese friends answers when they are studying for an exam. This makes so much sense to me now, because when I read what they have written, it doesn't make any sense. They tell me that they copy sentences from other essays and join them together to form an answer. In reality, the answer ends up not flowing, and most of the time is gobbledygook!
