■Sanmon (Main Gate) (National Treasure)
The Sanmon was erected in 1621 by Tokugawa Hidetada, the second Tokugawa shogun and it has a height of about 24 meters, a width of about 50 meters, and about 70,000 roof tiles. ■Yūzen’en Garden
The Yūzen’en Garden was redesigned in 1954 in commemoration of the 300th birthday of Miyazaki Yūzen, the founder of the Yūzen style of dyeing. This is a famous modern garden which consists of two parts: one that draws water from a Higashiyama spring and the other in the karesansui (dry rock garden) style.
■Hōjō Garden (Designated by Kyoto City as a Famous Scenic Spot)
The Hōjō Garden is in the chisen kaiyūshiki (garden which is designed around a pond) style and is said to have been designed in the early Edo (1600-1868) period by the monk Gyokuen, who was disciple of garden master Kobori Enshū.
■Omi-nugui Shiki (Wiping Ceremony)
This ceremony is to wipe down the sacred image of Hōnen, which is normally housed inside the altar, with a silk cloth made from habutae(a high-quality double layered silk). On 25 December, the hall is filled with monks and worshippers, and a solemn yet magnificent ceremony is held while the nembutsu is chanted.
