Start with northern grown basswood (linden). I can provide you with quality basswood practice boards and good practice patterns.

I buy these basswood plates and sell them in the MyChipCarving"dot"com store. I only sell clear plates that are perfect for carving.

27+ years of chip carving and I've never cut myself. And you won't cut yourself too if you use the technique for holding the knife like I show. With your thumb locked against the handle there is no way to cut your hand holding the knife. Keep your other hand out of the way and you'll carve safe.

can you use a reguler carving knife like one of the sets from flexcut ????????????idont have the chip carving knives

I believe you're setting yourself up for frustration if you start with a below average knife like Flexcut. At mychipcarving.com you'll find a fantastic Modified Knife for $39.95. Scary Sharp, full tang, thumb notches, you'll be all set.

Read the reviews of my knives and you'll see that they are the best on the market. You can get one of my knives and be successful with chip carving or buy a cheaper knife and struggle your way towards frustration and quitting. One point has been missed here. Once you fall back on the CNC machine to do the work your result will no longer be considered art. And hardly any person would want to call you an artist.
