If you use this method try to CONCENTRATE .. Making a video and talking is not how to do it. Your reaction is just a tad to slow and see the result.

when this method is on it is way more fun than indicator fishing...the takes are vicious and you are on the fish immediately...hang on to the rod...you get a 4+ lb fish and you may lose the rod...btw, play the fish on the reel...hand stripping, though okay with smaller fish, will see you lose more fish as at the end of every pull you have that split second of slack line which can make the difference...

Great video. Thank you for the chironomid fishing lesson! I’m trying to get better at this technique.

I love that method. I'm a teacher, so a lot of my fishing is done in mid-summer, and therefore deep. Sinking line chironomids have saved a lot of days for me.

Cool video. Love watching the slack near the reel tighten up when the fish hits! Definitely going to try this technique this year. Thanks again for sharing.

Wilbert: Thanks for responding right back, and for the information you shared. I am going to order a SA. Sonar Clear Intermediate Sinking fly line in the next couple weeks to do some chironomiding with this spring at a few lakes in this area. I already have a dark green hi-d fly line that sinks at 6 ips that I also plan to use for chronomid fishing with a sinking line, but it's not clear. I'm pretty sure a clear line would be better to fish chironies with than a dark colored line, especially if you're fishing in a gin clear stillwater lake. I have fly fished stillwaters all over BC since 1956 when I was 8 years old. There are some pretty amazing lakes to fish up there. Now I fish mainly in southern Wash.and stillwaters over on the east side mostly. Anyway, thanks for all the help and suggestions. Take care. Denny

Wilbert: I see we are real close in age. We probably have fished some of the same waters up your way maybe even at the same time.. I have caught some really big fish out of Island Lake behind the copper mine near Logan Lake, Fir lake, west of Williams Lake, Ballon Lake, near Horsefly, Whitetail Lake over on the east side, and many others. But that was a long time ago when we lived up near the border and it wasn't very far for me to get up there. I'm not sure how they are producing these days. But boy are the memories of past days spent up there ever sweet. You are lucky if you have those waters in your backyard. I wish you many more years of enjoyment up there. Take care. May you always have a tight line. Denny

Yes I am fishing the same waters. Island is the only one not fish. Why leave the honey hole ! Gee my Math are off!! We are the same age 68 . All my kids and family are gone from WL . The Fishing is what is keeping me here ..especially the lake in those videos of mine. That is a Gem of a lake for sight fishing. I do not know what they eat but those fish are aggressive and if you have not seen your backing for a while? You will know the color of that backing very fast and then the "am I going to get spooled kicks in gear." :-) The Ice should be Off for next Saturday and that's where I will be. Tight line ! Wilbert.

Wilbert: I have watched several of your videos. Make's me drool for sure. Brings back a ton of good memories. I almost came up your way last fall, but circumstances came up so that I couldn't make it. I was considering hitting a few lakes close to you near WL like Dog, Beaver, Snag, Elkhorn, Kloakut, Murphy, Cook and maybe a few others. So I don't know how any of them are doing these days. Maybe someday things will work out. I like fishing in the late fall best. The fish seem to be really cooperative about then. I just spent a few hours on the Columbia river today fishing for springers. No luck. There were at least 300 or more fishing in the area we launched out of and only 7 fish were counted by the checker. Pretty slim odds to say the least. So I think I'll wait till mid May to try again. In the meantime I will be soaking a few dragonfly nymphs at some local lakes near here. I wish you great fishing in your neck of the woods. Denny

I have 3 clear lines float, intermediate and sinking lines . I used the clear ones of the Gin Clear water type lakes since the fish can see the shadows while sight fishing. On tea color water it does not seem to matter much about color. besides once the line is deep 40' plus. Color becomes less Visible/relevant and even changed color due to lack of sunlight. ... I think! :-)

I have been told the Blue color is the last one they see deep. Maybe time to tie a blue chronie deep and see what happens ? :-) The shadows is how Walter in one of my videos got scared. That lake is my favorite here when it comes to fly fishing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa2iZtNlxKnSmn0.html

A full sinking line on a flyrod...a flyrod is the wrong technology for a full sinking line!
@WilbertRobichaud
@WilbertRobichaud Жыл бұрын
I like that feedback, yet, the line is still a fly fishing line. actually, that kind of fishing reminds me of when I was a kid,not sure what year 7 or 8, in NB living near the ocean and fishing for smelts of the wharf, one bamboo rod, one line to the tip, and 6 hooks. Andy Griffith type, they were wonderful days. Now why is it the wrong technology?

On this lake .. the take is very light. While on another lake ,only a few minutes away , The Hit take the rod tip straight down. Almost take the rod out of your hand.

As long as your bait fishing, use some bait...worm, cheese, salmon eggs. Hookup ratio is much better.

So you cast it out and let it sit at the bottom until a fish comes by and takes it or it's taken on the fall? The bottom of the lake has to be teaming with fish though right?

Yes it has to have fish Feeding on chironomids.Sometimes the take will happen on the fall. This also works very well During the summer Doldrum,since the fishing is in cooler waters. This also work well with Micro Leech's and Nymphs (Mayflies). You do not even need to cast if you choose not to especially on a very windy day.

Wilbert: I enjoyed your video very much. I have one question about the leader tho. It looks like you have two different segments tied to each other about 12 inches up from the chironomid. Is that a lighter tippet you've added as a bottom section? Or is it a super small swivel you've got tied in there and then your lighter tippet tied to that? I can't really tell. It looks like it's really flexible right there too. Thanks for your help. Denny- fellow fly fisherman

Sure can help. The total length is six feet . The only reason I do this is to make sure the split shot does not hit the Top guide when I have the fish in the net.I use 4 feet and two feet with a Maxima .006dia tippet 4lbs for the last two feet. I put the split shot before the knot at the two foot section only because the split shot will not slip down the line. The split shot is only there to bring the Chronie faster into the feed zone. That way you can even use a floating line if you want.if you want more info just ask... But wait till the Habs Ranger game is over! :-)

what are your thoughts on clear sinking lines and colored sinking lines?

Do you strip this in at all or just let it sit? How do you determine the depth to fish in a particular lake - past experience? - depth finder? Is this mostly a spring/fall technique or is it successful all year?
@WilbertRobichaud
@WilbertRobichaud 9 жыл бұрын
+William Klein No stripping just let the line sit a foot of the bottom. Chronies will always comes out from the marl. Once I know how deep I am ,I measure my line to be 12" from the bottom. I know my anchor line is 50 feet. I simply measure what is left in the boat to know how deep the fish are. Unless I have my Fish Finder then it is a lot easier. From Ice off to Ice on. I even use this during the Hot summers day when nothing is happening on top. Fish got to eat.
