I am always amazed at how willingly Kander & Ebb took on dark and difficult material in a traditional musical theatre form.

I agree; they were fearless in their choice of subject matter.

When you're young, Feeling oh so strong What can prove you wrong? Love, and love alone. When the sun, Seems forever bright What can dim it's light? Love, and love alone. So beware young love, lost in a kiss There's a truth young love, simple as this: Every fond hello, ends in goodbye. What seems certain to live, will die. So enjoy all the time there is . If you're his, be his. Make each day your own. When tomorrow's come And your heart is stone What has made it numb? Love and love alone. Love and love alone.

Miss Rivera is an amazing performer ... a huge talent. I have had the honor of seeing her in person many times and she is absolutely dazzling ... she puts feeling and emotion into every song , she touches your heart. ... this song is beautifully sad and sung like only Chita Rivera can!

Chita sounds incredible! Just goes to prove that if you take care of your voice, it can last a life time. I saw Chita in "The Rink" and of course she was a force of nature! Thank you so much for the post :)

Reminds me of I was beautiful from dear world(1969 with landsbury) also the ending cue has bits of three penny opera's mack the knife"mackie how much did you charge" (don't know what recording that is from!) & no life from sunday in park with greoge(84 broadway cast recording) p.s: We better a cast recording for this show!

I agree....it reminds me of Dear World....could it be the French element...an accordian? perhaps

@@leahsantavicca5323 Oh wow! wasn't expecting anybody replying to such an old comment i made! p.s: yeah. they probably did mentioned what instruments were used (for that song) in said cd/booklet of The Visit.

@operaticmickey8309 I know the accordionist. He worked with my dad, who was also an accordionist
I ADORE CHITA, but I have followed her dancing most of my life and it is heartbreaking to see her walk with a cane, weather for the character or not it hurts my heart, to know that one of my idols is aging. She is freaking amazing.

Derrie Carpenter Oh trust me, that cane is only a prop.

She walks with the cane because of the role.I saw Chita dancing with Dick Van Dyke the same year in a tv special

Beautiful! Does the young woman represent a more youthful version of Chita's character?
@georgespellvin68599 жыл бұрын
AvalonMorley Having seen the show, yes.
@AvalonMorley9 жыл бұрын
Paul Sanford I've read some opinions that the use of the two central character's youthful selves is too much, that it should ave been saved until near the end, thus having more impact. It does sound like it could get to be stale after awhile. The show seems to bring out vastly differing opinions, more so than many shows do.

I personally don't think so. Claire and Anton don't acknowledge the images of their past until the very end of the show, Chita in this number and Roger Rees (her costar) just before something drastic happens to him. No spoilers. Might just be people being distracted during a minimalist staging though. Where are these comments?
@JaredGoerke9 жыл бұрын
AvalonMorley The young lady is Young Claire yes.

Paul Sanford Sorry I just found your post, and thanks for it. I had read such a comment and some agreements (and disagreements) with it on Talkin' Broadway/All That Chat. That board moves pretty quickly, so those exchanges are long gone (that site doesn't archive). I wish I could have seen THE VISIT (and, for that matter, a ton of shows in New York), and I'm sorry it's closed. I'm a very big Chita fan, and also a fan of Roger Rees (love him on the MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE ocr). I also read that his understudy/alternate was excellent. It's been a very long road for THE VISIT (just going by how long I've been reading about it, hearing a song or two here and there, hearing about earlier productions~didn't one of them star Ann Reinking? Or maybe she choreographed...). Anyway, thanks.

Well, leave it to Chita to handle a choreographed dance number for an elderly woman with a limp and a cane and turn it into grace and elegance. She manages to communicate just about as much with her face, her hands, and the limited use of her hips and torso as that marvelous Veintimilla does with her agile, lithe body, legs and feet.

I'd love to see this, especially since I adore the non-musical version. One question- why rename Ill to, apparently, "Anton?"
