Chitralekha is a 1934 Hindi fiction novel by Indian author Bhagwati Charan Varma. Its background dates back to the reign of Chandragupta Maurya. This story is about life and philosophy of love, sin and virtue.
It is based on Anatole France's 1890 novel "Thais" but the background is Indian. In the words of the author himself, “The difference between my "Chitralekha" and of Anatole France's "Thais" is as much as between me and Anatole France. There is a problem in Chitralekha, I have my own view of human life and its good and bad, and it carried music of my soul."

It was adapted into Hindi films twice, in 1941 and 1964. Both the times the films were hugely successful.
Like any language, the essence of its local aroma lies in its cultural richness. This Hindi work cannot be replicated in its entirety in any language. However, the story can only be told again.
About this Author -
Bhagwati Charan Verma (30 August 1903 - 5 October 1981) was one of the leading writers in Hindi. He wrote many novels, his best work was Chitralekha (1934), which was made into two successful Hindi films in 1941 and 1964 respectively. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award for his epic five-part novel, Bhoole Bisre Chitra in 1961 and Padma Bhushan in 1971. He was also nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1978.
