Chiyo is Ayumu's closest friend. Chiyo means more to her, than any of the others do. And Chiyo is the one who cares most about Ayumu, and Ayumu notices this and therefore appreciates and values Chiyo highly and trusts her the most. This is quite obvious if you pay attention throughout Azumanga to the interactions they have with each other and listen to what Chiyo says to her and the thoughts we hear Chiyo have about Ayumu. So she likely spoke to Chiyo about jumping off because she wanted Chiyo to know her better, and to deepen their bond. And she felt comfortable in that setting together with Chiyo. She may've wanted Chiyo to know for quite some time, but she couldn't just walk up to Chiyo at any moment and bluntly say _"I'm not as happy as I may seem, I'm really not okay, I often feel bad and sometimes I think about killing myself, please help me"_ so when that situation (them standing there together near the roof edge and Chiyo having already initiated the conversation) on the roof presented itself to her, then she acted quickly and made use of that situation, to voice her thoughts to Chiyo that way. Because she felt comfortable in that moment, and she could word it the way she did -- instead of being direct and blunt about it, which would've felt more difficult. Much easier for her to latch on to what Chiyo said and respond light-heartedly with _"Yeah, it's nice... feels like one could just fly away if one jumped off from here..."_ and hope Chiyo would understand. So yes I think it was intentional. Just not planned: before they got to the roof, she didn't know she would be speaking to Chiyo about that there and then. For some time already she'd wanted to open up more to Chiyo, and simply finally found a suitable moment and suitable way of doing it. But Chiyo was very perceptive and had already noticed Ayumu wasn't feeling well. Chiyo had already suspected Ayumu might often be awake during the nights, that that's the reason she sleeps in class -- we see Chiyo thinking about that in the same episode as this video is from (Ep 12), but she undoubtably thought about it earlier as well. Surely she also logically wondered _why_ Ayumu would be awake during the nights and connected some dots. And two episodes prior to the one this video is from, in Ep 10, Chiyo sees Ayumu being sad, and later sees her very sad and crying, because she thinks she'll be separated from the others (when the classes were shuffled as they became 2nd year students), and Chiyo is being supportive. And crucially it should be noted that before Ayumu even says anything about that to Chiyo, Chiyo had already noticed that Ayumu was feeling bad and went back to the classroom (where she "knew" Ayumu still was) to cheer her up and talk with her. So Chiyo had long ago perceived a lot about Ayumu. And perhaps Ayumu sensed that Chiyo was perceptive and understanding, which could be a factor in why she felt so drawn to Chiyo and comfortable with her and so on. But Chiyo was more perceptive than Ayumu realized.

When Osaka looks up there, yes, that's because of that (the food). But the preceding part isn't about Chiyo. She's talking about herself, as in "If I jumped off here" or "If one jumped off here". She's not saying Chiyo could jump off. And Chiyo specifically says she's worried Osaka might do that. So it's very specifically about Osaka, not Chiyo. There's not any "deep depression message" anywhere in Azumanga and Azumanga is meant to be primarily funny and light. But if you look past that, if you look past the surface, past the sillyness etc, you will see that Osaka is indeed depressed and and has suicidal thoughts. It's very subtle and only hinted at (in various ways), but it's there. If you read/watch the whole of Azumanga with this constantly in mind then you should be able to notice it (with the anime it helps if you watch it without sound so you're not influenced by the cheerful music and voices). The two most obvious things that can be pointed out is the first roof scene when Osaka talks about jumping off, and in the manga when Osaka says she wants to see her life flash before her eyes - and Tomo responds with "Don't do it, Osaka". Osaka was bullied in Osaka city, in the school there. She says in the manga, looking sad, that they called her names there, like "moron". And she never says she misses her old school. It's never revealed why her family moved away from Osaka city to Tokyo, but we can surmise it may have something to do with Osaka being bullied -- maybe life in general was bad for her there, and her parents wanted their daughter to grow up in a friendlier and better environment. That a reason for the move to Tokyo isn't provided -- while at the same time Osaka being a transfer student and having moved is made a big deal out of -- that in of itself can point to Osaka being bullied being the reason, as a short comment like "My dad recently got a job in Tokyo so we had to move" could have been thrown in somewhere but wasn't. In her new school her classmates are friendly with her and supportive, but at the same time they nevertheless point out to Osaka that she's slow and so on, even going so far as saying there's something wrong with her brain. How does she really feel about that, getting told that sort of things? For the most part we don't see Azumanga from Osaka's perspective or hear her thoughts etc -- most of the scenes, we see only as outside observers. But it's logical to assume she doesn't like being told she's slow or dumb. And it's also logical to assume she feels inferior and different (in a bad way). Because objectively she is in many ways inferior, both physically and mentally. Regarding physical inferiority, for example: In the manga Sakaki tells Osaka her large breasts aren't really that impressive, that they're just big because overall her body is bigger. She tries to make Osaka feel better about herself through that argument - Osaka responds saying "Oh so if we were the same height, we'd have the same breast size?" and Sakaki nods her head, then Osaka looks away, looking sad, and says "Yeah right...". And later, in the anime (maybe in the manga too, can't remember), when they're in swimsuits and she talks to Kimura and he ignores her, she then moves her hand over to her breasts and does a "grabbing" motion with her hand, showing that she realizes Kimura ignored her because she wasn't worth talking to because her breasts are too small. And she performs very poorly in sports and gymnastics. The point is Osaka is obviously aware of her inferiority and undoubtably feels inferior in that regard, as well as mentally/intellectually. Aside from that, you should notice that a lot of the "jokes" Osaka makes or that are associated with Osaka involve death or things which would kill her. Some of those scenes you can read deeper into or extrapolate things from. But that's not what I mean here. Primarily what I mean is that you should notice that thematically, one of the themes around Osaka is death, dying and dead things - that it's a recurring theme. For example she looks at the skeleton of the Yamapikarya cat and sounds downright happy when she says the cat will one day look like that and thinks it looks "nice and bony" (regarding that, why she said "nice and bony", here we can think a bit deeper -- all things considered, did Osaka have an eating disorder? did she starve herself at some point? is that why she's physically the way she is? did malnutrition stunt the growth of her breasts and make her weak? she actually says, to Kagura, that she eats very little). And when she's in the pool she talks about how in order to float "all i have to do is become a dead body". And then there's the "we will fill the place with animals... and they'll all be dead" scene. And the scene where there's a ghost in one of Sakaki's photos and Osaka says she knows the ghost. And then Osaka's horror story in which she kills her classmates. And then there's her dream where she kills Chiyo and takes her pigtails and flies away crying. And there's the pool scene where Chiyo looks like she's drowned and Osaka looks happy (yes that's because to Osaka "Chiyo learned to float", but the point is: it visually looks like death, and Sakaki is terrified but Osaka looks happy, as if she's happy Chiyo died (and no I'm not saying she thought Chiyo was dead or that she was happy that Chiyo looked dead, I'm merely saying that's how the scene is presented visually). And then of course the scene with her thinking of jumping off the roof, and wanting to see her life flash before her eyes -- things that would in effect kill her. Those are the ones I can think of right now. Then you have the odd scene in the anime with her standing alone on the sidewalk with Tomo and Yomi behind her and Osaka turns around and says, looking serious and strangely sad, "I will never forget you". That scene is quickly transformed into a funny lighthearted one (hearing Tomo speak made Osaka happier), but, regardless, she was standing still on the sidewalk alone in some deep thoughts which lead to her saying that; so what was really going on in her mind? The point here is that the first part of that scene is odd and seemingly unfitting for Osaka -- if one views Osaka as being only what she appears to be on the surface, that is - but if the viewer recognizes Osaka as being troubled and having dark thoughts, then it's not strange at all. And while just a small detail, it's interesting and relevant when everything else is taken into consideration: Osaka's eyes are different from everyone else's. The shine in everyone's eyes is located in the upper region of the eyes, so the eyes are "pointing" upwards, they are "uplifting" visually. Except on Osaka. On Osaka the shine is located in the lower region of her eyes, so they "point" downwards.

I _always_ refer to her by her name. I never use "Osaka" (unless quoting something). I do this not only because it's the correct and accurate thing to do, but also because Ayumu doesn't think of herself as "Osaka" at all which we see in Episode 10 when she can't find her name in the list of names for the new classes; she's looking for Ayumu, can't find Ayumu because she was listed as "Osaka" and then says _"Ehh? Osaka is me?"_ after Yomi tells her "Osaka" is in the list. Ayumu wants to not be called "Osaka" but answers to it and puts up with it because her friends are calling her that and they're (mostly) nice to her and aren't calling her "Osaka" to bully her, so she's able to tolerate them calling her that. But she strongly dislikes the "Osaka" itself. She says _"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!"_ in the ADV manga and _"That's so dumb!"_ in the Yen Press version. She'd prefer not being called that. See her reaction and what she says and (in the anime) _thinks_ when Tomo first starts calling her that. At the end of Episode 1 and in the manga on Page 50 in ADV and Page 48 in YP. Related is Page 68 ADV and 66 YP, where she tells Tomo she's not really Osakan and only technically "from Osaka" in the sense she moved from Osaka after having lived there for a while after moving from Kobe (where she went to elementary school) and that she's originally from Wakayama. That's an important detail because it ties in with how she's _not like an Osakan at all._ Which Tomo immediately notices and gets disappointed by as she wanted Ayumu to be a stereotypical Osakan, which is why she calls her an impostor/fake (which scares Ayumu and makes her sad) and demands to see her lunch which she hoped would contain Takoyaki (Osakan food). To which Ayumu, looking like she's scared Tomo is going to dislike her or even scared she's going to get bullied by Tomo (it's Ayumu's first moments in her new school; she's nervous and doesn't know how she'll be received, and Tomo is behaving like a potential bully), reacts by _deciding to_ say _"nandeyanen"_ in an attempt to satisfy Tomo so Tomo will like her and accept her. Before saying that, Ayumu thinks _"Oh!"_ which is her _realizing_ Tomo wants her to be an Osakan and that saying the "Osakan" _"nandeyanden"_ phrase would probably help; _she realized that could be a solution_ to the problematic situation she was in. That little _"Oh!"_ in the anime unfortunately lacks emphasis and is almost missable and comes across somewhat differently, due to how quickly it goes by and due to the animation (partly due to the angles changing rapidly) combined with how it's spoken. In the anime it's just a quick little sound, whereas in the manga it's _a moment._ In the manga it looks more obvious that _she's thinking and then realizing something._ And the _"Oh!"_ has its own panel and since the manga (mostly) consists of 4 panel strips, that gives weight to that panel (so the _"Oh!"_ is thus more emphasized). Ayumu's speech may sound like an Osakan's. But _she_ isn't like an Osakan. If she's like anything she's like a Kobe girl more than an Osakan one; as evident in certain aspects of her behavior and personality and preferences, and even a bit in how she dresses. Kobe and Osaka and Wakayama are part of the _Kansai_ area. And it's important to remember that while today several of the Kansai regions are interconnected into what looks like one big city, that's a very recent development. Only a few generations ago, Kobe city and Osaka city for example weren't tightly connected with buildings and roads like now. Only about a hundred years ago, the cities within the Kansai area were much smaller and more physically separate. They were also more culturally distinct from each other. Differences in culture, in the people, developed over the centuries (over a thousand years really) and these differences didn't vanish overnight due to increased urbanization. Some differences still remain. One shouldn't think of the way Ayumu talks as "Osakan" but rather that she simply talks in _the Kansai dialect._ Because her way of talking isn't unique to Osaka, nor is she talking like a stereotypical Osakan. The Osakan way of talking is the Kansai way; it's the Kansai dialect. The Kansai dialect varies a bit depending on the region within the Kansai area. There's Kobe and Wakayama and Osaka (and other) variants. Must be remembered she moved around within the Kansai area and only lived in Osaka for a short while. She evidently lived in Kobe longer. And as she was born in Wakayama she may've heard Wakayaman Kansai from her parents. Regardless, she grew up hearing _the Kansai dialect_ everywhere and that's how she learned to talk. So while she talks _like_ an Osakan (since Osakans speak the Kansai dialect) and while she says a few Osakan things sometimes, how she's talking should be thought of as simply the Kansai way. And Ayumu's Kansai dialect is soft and natural. Her speech is nowhere near as extreme as the Eng dub and the Yen Press manga make it out to be. Nor is it exaggerated in the Japanese manga - the way she talks is natural and different just enough to make you notice she's from the Kansai area. When Japanese media portrays an Osakan they use an Osaka-stereotype where the behavior is very different, and the speech is rougher and harsher and more pronounced than how Ayumu talks. She doesn't behave or talk like that, because she's not meant to be an Osakan. She was a tiny bit (superficially) influenced by Osakan culture while living there, and knowing her friends like hearing about Osaka she mentions Osaka-related things sometimes. But Ayumu doesn't embody or represent an Osakan at all. The Eng dub and the Yen Press manga completely misrepresent both her speech and (more importantly) Ayumu herself by giving her an extreme American accent to underscore that _"she's Osakan!"_ to constantly remind people of that. A huge mistake and misses the point about her having moved from Osaka which is that _she's not like an Osakan; she's essentially the opposite of one._ That's the most basic and most fundamental joke about Ayumu, about her being "from Osaka". The individuals responsible for the Eng dub and the Yen Press translation of the manga missed that entirely and instead thought _"The main joke and central theme about this character is she's a stereotypical Osakan, and that's reflected in her totally extreme Osakan way of talking - so let's give her a heavy American accent (to represent this) to always remind people she's Osakan so they don't forget it, and since she has this extreme ha-ha-funny way of talking in Japanese let's make her sound as extreme as possible in English."_ It couldn't be more upside-down. It's just as dumb and wrong as if you had a story with some German guy born in München moving to Berlin after having lived in Danzig for a while and giving him a thick Russian accent to underscore that _"that guy is from Danzig; he's so eastern!"._ It's possible however YP weren't thinking much and simply _wanted to imitate_ the Eng dub; _wanted her to sound like the Eng dub_ in their manga. In any case, the only official English release of Azu Daioh without this mistake is the ADV version of the manga (that's the first official English release, completed in early 2004 - the YP version is from late 2009). While in the ADV manga she's _meant_ to have some accent, it's ultra light and practically non-existent for 99% of her dialogue; 99% of what she says looks like standard English so there's no special sound at all to what she says. In stark contrast, the Yen Press'd Ayumu _always_ in every panel sounds like the Eng dub; it's impossible to read the YP version without reading her in the Eng dub voice. Aside from their mistreatment of Ayumu, the YP manga has other problems in its translation and localization but so does the ADV manga; both changed various things they shouldn't have. But it should be noted they mostly changed _different_ things and sometimes the translation is better in the ADV manga and sometimes better in the YP version. So there's bad stuff in both. But it's easier to forgive and overlook the bad stuff in the ADV manga as their Ayumu isn't mistreated. The Eng dub voice casts a negative light over the entire YP manga. It's extremely jarring, offputting and distasteful. And disrespectful. But most importantly it's misrepresentative. This misrepresentation, by the Eng dub and YP, has negatively impacted many Azu fans' understanding of Ayumu. It has caused such a distorted perception of her in some people's minds that they think _she is_ a stereotypical Osakan; that _an Osakan_ is what's represented by Ayumu, and they even think her unusualness and weirdness is connected with her _being Osakan;_ that she's "different" because _she's Osakan,_ like her character is rooted in and revolves around her being Osakan. Such an upside-down perception of her can only come about if one has been exposed primarily to the Eng dub and/or the YP manga. The YP manga is probably the main culprit as only a tiny minority of people watch anime dubbed but when people read the Azu Daioh manga chances are very high they're reading the YP version. Another effect of the American accent is that it, due to how it sounds, fuels the incorrect perception that she's stupid. This distorted view in turn impedes understanding of Ayumu. Because if you associate her being "different" with _being Osakan,_ then you won't connect the dots in her character and see that something clearly isn't right with her; that some (unknown) bad stuff obviously happened to her which made her be the way she is. Her "different"-ness is of course linked with her problems (her sadness etc). Whenever you encounter anyone with her sort of problems who's also "different", there's always a cause for it all - whatever hurt and damaged her also contributed to making her different and strange and unique in interesting ways.

We don't get to know too much about Osaka's past before moving, though she mentions people back there would always say she was slow, so we could assume she has been like this for enough time for people to just see her lile this It's likely then an incident that would happen in her early childhood, assuming from how drastic and set in her habits and overall just behavior is, I would assume she probably grew up with toxic parents who would most likely not allow her to grow and challenge herself, maybe overprotective parents who were always treating her like she was too slow or could not pay attention for herself, and would do everything for her This would explain how absent minded she is at times, as she's not used to having to pay attention to things for too long, receding into her own mind while her parents did all the work for her, and maybe even bribe teachers to give her better grades, assuming she would not be good enough to study on her own while at school Osaka despite this tries to challenge herself at many points showing that she wants to grow and she wants to be better, she just never got the chance before, and it's only now that she's away from her parents that she gets to try things and explore the world around her as best as she can The isolation too, may contribute the factor of suicidal tendencies, as Osaka would feel detached from the world around her, and feeling like she doesn't belong, like death might be her only gateway to a world she feels she fits better in, her own dreams

I've heard one claiming that the reason Tomo's such an asshole is in part because she was molested by her dad (during one of the festival episodes when they're all wearing yukatas, Tomo asks if the other girls' dads ever twirled their daughters around by pulling on the sash of their yukatas, which would leave them naked or in their underwear; the other girls look shocked after Tomo's question).
