While I'm conflicted about Sang Woo, there is one thing that people often forget. If they were in a life or death situation where either they could save themselves or kill someone else, they would've probably acted the way he did. It's easy to judge when you're not in the scenario yourself but one's instinct for survival could end up overcoming their moral values which was the case with him

Yeah in the first episode, they reveal to everyone that he was a team leader at an investment firm and he shafted people on finances. So he's extremely intelligent, calculating, he has used and betrayed people in the past, so you really have to watch your back with this guy.

Maybe not Sang Woo in the end game (literally coming up with a plan in minutes to betray Ali and make it seem like a game to survive and straight-up MURDERING Sae Byeok) but Sang Woo in the beginning is absolutely a character type most people are going to execute.

the show clearly told us that the main reason why Sang Woo joined the game In the first place. he wanted to save his mother. Sang Woo only said "my mother" as his last words because the show wanted to give us a punch in the gut.

Sure, he wants the money as well but when you’re in debt, poor and being chased by the police, I think you’d also want some money for yourself, right? Sang-Woo did what he had to do. I may hate what he did but he had to think for himself. After all, only 1 person was gonna make it out alive. Also, Sang-Woo has a heart, it’s just that the Squid Games turned him into a psychopath. He had gone through so much and so he was ready to do anything for that money.

He is such a complex, realistic character. I think it’s crazy how they showed his suicide attempt in the earlier episodes almost like a foreshadowing to his actual demise. And the fact that he attended such a prestigious and elite school emphasizes that he is a quick-thinking person who knows how to work with a highly competitive environment under pressure. It’s insane how much of a downward spiral everything post-episode 6 was. He literally lost his marbles in that particular game. Such a tragic and well-written character. Park Hae Soo did an amazing job portraying him.

People forget that they are looking at movies/shows in hindsight. But, if it were their real life and the events were happening to them, most would not be nice and naive as Ali. Hell, people are ready to beat you for cutting lines at the store or traffic in a jam. Yet, act as if they would be so kind when a gun is aimed at their head. Nah.. A lot of people don't like him Sang Woo, but he's my favorite. He's so sexy and cunning, yet the most relatable.

IMO most people keep to themselves and are smart and resourceful in their own ways. The glassmaker is the most "relatable" character since he kept his knowledge to himself in the 5th game, knocking out his competition, before finally revealing this info for himself once he was at the front. Even his death was a pretty standard one, being "sacrificed" by a stronger player. Sang Woo is a lesser spoken minority where you have the "brutal 20%," aka the people who came to win/are degraded to the point where they do anything to win. I HIGHLY doubt most people would murder an already fatally injured woman, nor come up with a cunning plan in MINUTES to trick a close teammate and frame it in the context of the challenge. Yeah he's definitely shouldn't be hated for the likeliness and high probability of a character like this existing, but he absolutely isn't the most relatable imo.

@@lorrisnzouakeu5823 Out of the main characters he is. 1. In that situation, you'd be shocked at what most people would do if a gun is aimed at their head. 2. The window maker was actually about to sacrifice everyone behind him because he was taking so long and afraid to move forward. 3. Sae-Byeoks killing was a mercy killing, she was suffering, and wasn't going to survive. 4. Ali was better at marbles, so Sang Woo changed the narrative. Sang Woo used his mental skills to outsmart him. Ali was a physical player, and he used those skills in other games. 5. The point of the game was to have only one person standing at the end to win the money, it wasn't to make friends.

He died because he ultimately underestimated Gi-Hun which is often what these types of people do. Then when offered a chance at survival, the reality of his broke fugitive life hit him and he decided to A) Not suffer any longer and B) Do the "right thing" to at least help something.

Helping Ali and all, he acted the way he did during the games because that's our survival instinct and yeah i am obviously furious he betrayed Ali and killed people but I can't say I would do differently because the will to live usually prevails above morals.

By the end, he went bonkers (talking about how he killed Sae-Byeok), and he was in the game because he originally embezzled money from clients which indicates a certain lack of empathy and principles. It's further reinforced by the hint in the dalgon game where he could have given Gihun a hint but refused to, as back then, it wasn't clear that they would have needed to kill each other to get the money. The eliminations were only committed by the pink soldiers. I think the way he treated Ali, as some people more apt than me explained in other platforms, have more to do with his ego as the golden child of his hometown/SNU alumni businessman rather than simple kindness. I am not negating that he might have a softer side, but judging by his ruthlessness and previous greediness which led to him having to play the game...I don't expect much from him. And I don't say that to simp on Gihun who is a trashier, less smart foil to him. He has somewhat better morals, but not by much. Regardless, it would have been more realistic for Sangwoo to win IMO, and I do fee curious about what would his next step be.

@@williamsmith4091 I also believe that maybe it was because he kept on looking for the kid in the meantime, if my memory serves me well, Sae-Byeon didn't tell him his name nor the shelter's address so that might have slowed down the process (?), unless he also waited a whole year to give Sang-woo's mother the money as well 😅🙃... (I haven't finished yet ep 9)

sangwoo definitely isn't a good person, but what he IS, is a very good character. his writing is complex, he reflects the theme well and is acted flawlessly. but while not being a good person, he's not the horrible evil villain some of y'all say he is. he represents the themes frequently brought up in survival movies: how far would you go to survive? he is a clear character. money or death, i love this character.

He changed a lot throughout the game, in the first game he told guy the method how to get up without being detected but just by the second game he kept his mouth shut and let him pick the umbrella and then betrayed Ali and then pushed the glass manufacturer and then killed the girl. Spoilers in this comment, so beware! I think a big issue that Sang-woo represents is the pressure that can fall on some kids/people to be this or that. From the start of the series, everyone talks about how amazing he is, how smart, what a prodigy, etc. (It's not just Gi-hun.) But circumstances have led him to ruin. And ultimately, he couldn't even face his mother, not even when given a last chance outside of the games. He clearly went to see her, but couldn't bring himself to face what she might think of him. The game was his last hope. He was literally on the brink of suicide. It was either win the game and 'restore his good name' or die. I think he was prepared to do whatever it took to win before seeing Gi-hun was there too. At first, he tries this with Gi-hun too, but it hurts, and he shows remorse. So he's sort of at war with himself throughout the series. It's easier to just be a monster once Gi-huh seems to hate him. I think it's important to remember the last bit of the series with him. Everyone always worries about Sang-woo having the knife so close to him when Gi-hun offers him his hand and the chance to walk away from the game together. He very well /could have/ killed him there. I don't think it has to deal with how badly he's injured at that point that he doesn't. (The game staff seem to patch Gi-hun up for the most part before they send him back out to the streets.) I think when push came to shove, he couldn't bear the thought of actually killing Gi-hun in the end. Especially since, against all regard to safety, Gi-hun was literally willing to sacrifice everything to spare Sang-woo's life. Gah, I have so many feels.

Remember that, at the end, he chose to make Gi-hun the winner rather than having both of them continue living as paupers, because he knew from the way Gi-hun refused to let him go that he would take care of his mother for him. If he were truly a villain, he would have taken the knife next to him and shanked him.

Death was always an option for Sang Woo. Remember he tried to kill himself in eps 2 but the second invitation saved him. He only went back there to save his mom not himself. He already made a deal with the devil and ended his life. That led to him eventually kill kang se byeok because she said she wanted to go home now and Gi Hun would have definitely voted yes with her to go home.

SPOILER ALERT. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED SQUID GAME. I don’t think so tbh. Yeah, sure, she’s really pretty (she is a very famous model), but I’ve seen a lot of girls say that she’s their favourite character. My mother watched Squid Game as well and she was really upset when she died and she wanted her to win the money. I think it’s the fact that she’s one of the most innocent characters there and she’s also smart and intelligent, as well as strong. She doesn’t trust anyone but she is trustworthy. Not many characters in Squid Game if any at all have all these characteristics that she has. I think her being pretty is just a bonus; just because she’s pretty, I wouldn’t say she’s the best character.

Although people have probably watched it if they're watching this. yeah it was more of her back story than looks and tbh she did deserve the win but I think hwang just broke people's hearts to show how cruel the world can be. Will admit I was thinking about the show and her death still about 2 weeks but I guess I eventually accepted it it was more of a sacrifice so she could help her brother out pretty sure she knew she was fucked with that glass injury hence taking about the promise to take care of each other's loved ones.

Wow. The people who like Sae Byeok do so because they found her backstory and the way she presents herself in the game engaging. Not everything has to be boy good girl bad, you know. You don't see people talking about male characters being liked because they're attractive or whatever so why do you downplay Sae Byeok's character? Simple answer is misogyny I guess. Sang Woo was a very interesting and well written character but people don't like him because of his actions in the show. He was written to be unlikeable, the opposite to Gi Hyun. Deok Su was written to be openly unlikeable (as well as Mi Nyeo) and Sang Woo was the subtle real villain who got exposed along each episode. In the end opinions are subjective so even if Sang Woo is well written and interesting it doesn't mean he's the best character. Some people preferred Gi Hyun, others Ali or Sae Byeok. Hell I've even seen people who like Il Nam best. It's all opinion but don't downplay people's favourite character just because YOU can't see past the fact she's a girl.

He was the only one among the characters who had the intelligence and determination to do whatever it takes to reach the end. His character is so well dignified that even though the things he did were pure evil and all but no one can really hate him.

I just find it funny how people will hate on him for playing a game that intended to have one survivor and out smarting his opposition. While openly defending that scumbag old man who faked his dementia and created the game that is sending these desperate people to their deaths.

@@reduXstereo I have literally seen a channel that stated "Il-Nam did nothing wrong" and his arguments were that the contestants were voluntarily there and regarding the fact that they didn't know they would die for the first game, all they had to do in order to not be killed was "follow the rules" and I honestly doubt he was sarcastic.

tbf, none of the contestants knew that only one could survive. I see it as a major oversight on their part since no one even asked and if they knew from the start that only one would get away with his life, quite a few more would've left. And while I wouldn't be mad for outsmarting a contestant in the game, I don't think that corelates to what he's done here to Ali. Ali just had major respect and trust built towards him so I can only classify this as betrayal. At the end of the day I still can't be too mad at him though since all he's ever done was for his mother

@@FurryDanOriginal It’s only classified as a betrayal from Alis POV. Before the marble game began the proctors of the game had stated that the people they teamed up with were their opponents. So Sang-woo and Ali weren’t teammates during the game, Ali was just manipulated into thinking they still were.

most realistic character by far. he uses his own brains and tactics to save himself, and when he knows he has to he betrays others. not happy, but what you would do in that situation if you could.
