In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy explains the differences between the various torch options for your home studio. All of the torches shown in this brief video are readily available from either a hardware store or your local welding supply company.
It's important to pick the right torch; especially if you're on a tight budget. You want to select the one that will provide you will all of the options and power that you'll need to successfully complete your projects.
Before you put a torch into your home studio, be sure to check with your insurance carrier to see if it is allowable according to the type of home owners or renters insurance policy that you have.
If you aren't comfortable operating your torch, contact your local welding supply company to see if they provide instruction for handling your equipment. Most welding supply companies are happy to assist you with your torch. They know that if they can help you to feel comfortable with the operation of your torch you'll probably become a loyal customer.

Hi I have this idea to create a chandelier out of sconces to an antique Chinese incense pot. I also want to solder cabachons of real semi precious stones and coral. What kind of setup do I need ? I understood that I require the ventilator but where or how do I go about setting a small desk top workstation? I am thinking of working outdoors on a patio and live in a condominium unit so I really do need safety as the number 1 priority. Can I get away just with a jeweler's torch ?

Hi John, I need your help in figuring what torch to use inside my home. I need it to get hot enough to melt hard or medium solder as I want to do bezels on copper cuff bracelets and eventually work with silver. I'm wondering if you could recommend the EZTorch as it uses propane and I could get a small camper propane tank for it. I'm just curious about the safety issues inside my home. Also, I'd like to get your opinion on the smith little torch for home use. Appreciate your response and really love all your videos as I've learned so much.

Susan DeBay Whatever torch you decide to buy, be sure that you know how to properly operate it and have all of your safety precautions in place. This includes having good ventilation and a fire extinguisher. If you are completely up in the air about which torch to use, I suggest that you consult with your nearest welding supply store. They should be able to provide you with all the supplies and education you'll require to operate your torch safely within your home. Also, be sure to check with your insurance provider. Many insurance companies have restrictions on home owner's and renter's insurance policies with regard to the operation of a torch within a dwelling. You don't want to have an accident that won't be covered. Finally, I would recommend that you start with a portable butane torch like the one I use in the videos. When you are ready to do larger projects you might want to have a torch option larger than the smith little torch. I personally don't like propane fueled torches. Please consult with your local welding supply company and be safe. Thanks for being a loyal viewer. : )

I have an acetylene torch very much like htis and am fairly new to it. I have been trying to solder some bezel wire and am making a mess by turning it black. Am I holding the flame to close, using too bushy a flame, or what? I am worried because the key doesn't have a regulator and I am not really sure how far to open it. Sorry for the dumb questions...

Dharlee Minter I cannot see what you are doing. So, my best advice would be for you to check to be sure that you are using flux. If you aren't sure how to use your torch system, visit a local welding supply company and ask for their advice. Or, you could enroll in a class in your area and consult with your teacher. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

I want to get into casting. I have butane torches right now, and when I took a jewelry course my teacher said the blue propane torches aren't powerful enough to do casting. I was going to get the propane to do larger pieces than the butane will handle, but would you recommend the MAPP instead? I just watched the drop casting video and it seemed to work fine. But- if I buy the MAPP, is that going to be "too much torch" to do pieces that are too large for the butane, but not really huge? Should I get the regular propane for intermediate stuff, and the MAPP for casting? I'm not able to buy acetylene yet, otherwise I'd just get that.

Clever Kim Hi Clever Kim, Thanks for the great question. I'm sure you aren't the only person out there wondering about MAPP gas. I only use MAPP gas for melting casting grain. It's a really dirty gas. Most people use it for glass projects. If you are going to buy a bigger torch for bigger items, I recommend that you buy a Propane torch. So, you kind of need both types of torches until you can get an Acetylene torch. Good luck with your projects. And, thanks for watching! : )

+ROD Boricua Hi Rod, The differences between MAPP gas and Propane are: MAPP gas is a gas mixture that includes Propane and creates a hot and "dirty" flame; and Without an Oxygen supplement neither gas burns hot enough to accomplish a welding project. The OJA focuses on jewelry materials and therefore does not involve the use of aluminum and steel in its projects. We suggest that you consult with a local welding supply company for advice and help. Good luck with you projects. Thanks for your support! : )

Can i weld two thin sheets of steel with this? I want to weld two fountain pen nibs. They are of steel and very thin. Kindly reply

The torches shown in this video are inappropriate for welding fountain pen nibs. You might want to take your nibs to a jeweler who has a laser welder. Good luck.

The OJA does not give free plugs for vendors. But, I will give you a term that is searchable on the web. I'm sure that a quick Google search for: Small Butane Torch will produce quite a few recommendations on where to purchase a torch similar to the ones that I use in the videos. Read the manufactures information to ensure that you buy a torch that can reach 1500 degrees. Thanks for your support! : )

what is the name of the torch youre using?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 7 жыл бұрын
I use a number of different torches in the various videos. The bigger torch is a MAPP gas torch with a built in striker. You can find them at any hardware store. The smaller torch is a butane torch. There are a variety of brands available online. Butane torches are popular with chefs as well as jewelers. Just be sure to buy one that can achieve a temperature of 1500 degrees. Otherwise your solder will never flow. Good luck with your jewelry projects. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi. Can you name the smallest torch?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kostyra Medvedev, If this is a riddle, I don't have a witty response. I think the smallest torch available is a refillable butane torch like the one that I use in the videos. If you need a smaller one you'll have to look on Google for it. Thanks for your support! : )

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy hi and thank you. I want a torch that can do basket work or shank sizings easily but also melt down in a small crucible if needed.
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, Let's address melting first. You need a very hot flame to quickly and efficiently melt metal. The torch in the video that I would recommend is the MAPP gas torch (the yellow one). These types of torches are readily available from most hardware stores. And, they aren't expensive. The gas is cheap and dirty. But, it does the job nicely. For the finer work that you want to do, I would recommend that you acquire a butane torch (the little black one in the video). This torch has a finer flame that is easier to control. Just be sure to purchase one that can achieve a temperature of 1500 degrees or higher. Otherwise, you would need to purchase a more expensive Oxygen assisted torch. I hope that this information answered your question to your satisfaction. Thanks for your support! : )

dude your so rediculous , you can operate a torch just fine without a so called ventilator and you should NEVER use a cresent on a torch always use open end box end wrenches and ive been lighting torches with cigarette lighters for many many years without ever getting hurt !!
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 7 жыл бұрын
I agree that using an open end wrench is a better option for making torch adjustments. But, I disagree with you completely concerning the use of a ventilation system when working with a torch. As far as lighting a torch with a cigarette lighter, it's probably going to be safe most of the time. But, why risk it? Thanks for posting your comment Mr. Dick : )
