Thank you so much for your kind words! I am making a video/videos on this, which will help - hope to have them up this week. Short answer you want to find a solid question that you are investigating. Can you tell me a bit more about what you are thinking regarding your paper? So much depends on the kind of paper you are writing. I recommend finding something noone else seems to have answered. If there are papers our there that echo your sentiments, find a different topic. The best research papers are ones that find a tiny, small piece of a larger topic that does not seem quite right. Like a sweater with a snag--it is out of place. Your job is to pull at it. "Why does this not seem to fit?" "Why is that an exception?" "How did that affect X, and why does it matter?" It is important that you can tell your audience WHY you are investigating a topic -- you must have a "so what". Hope this helps -- I am working on videos!

I would look to what intrigues you about your subject. What are you thinking about witing on? Why does it interest you? Was there a class or book, conversation, etc. that particularly grabbed your attention. If so, why? Did someone say something you disagreed with or perhaps thought "I think there is more to it than that . . ." Perhaps you agreed but for different reasons. Perhaps they left something out. Look for the reactions you have to the subject that are not simply "Wow, that is interesting!" When did it seem something was missing? That is the point at which to investigate. Why do you feel that way? Etc. Avoid looking for an answer to write your paper around. You are looking for a question you do not have an answer for that you want to investigate. Does that help?

Hello! Contextualization happens throughout a paper, but for your purposes you want to make sure it is at the beginning--think intro/first several sentences. Let your contextualization give the reader the "so what?" they why-this-matters. You need to situate your reader within the issue/event/idea you are writing about. Think of when you are telling a friend about an interaction with someone else. If you just said "Mary said she uses pink highlighters the most," your listener is probably thinking "...and?", but if you say "Mary is a wiz at analyzing complex information, finding connections, and grouping like-minded ideas. She says the secret to her success is colour coding! And she says she uses pink highlighters the most because studies show that pink draws the eye more than yellow, even though the latter is the most common highlight colour." NOW I know why you are telling me what you are telling me, and you are giving me a reason it is applicable to me right now. Hope that helps!

Hmmm. What type of paper is this? Is it an argument-based paper? It would help to know what the assignment was. Generally, a thesis is a statement that you will then make a case for. What you have written is more or less fact so you are mostly left to just write a personal story. Does that make sense? I can better guide you if I know the assignment. Hope this helps.
