I remember when you'd go to the Tractor Supply or True Value hardware store and you had one or two choices. One was a yellow metal box and the other was the trusty Red metal box. It didn't matter which one you bought, they'd both knock your D in the dirt, but the Red one tended to work better and lasted longer. I don't think either of them had any markings other than the On/Off switch and the dial that amped up/down. Heck, I bet if you go to any old timer's farm you'll find a few of the Red ones still working to this day.

Yep, that old red box. One of the pastures we put horses we were breaking into when I was 15 or so had it. The box they put it in wasn't even completely enclosed but that box still worked and kicked as hard as the horses.

Granddad had two of the red boxes. One for each field. We learned real quick not to mess with that fence. The last time I got bite I was hooking up the path crossing wire. Some way my elbow get on it trying to stretch it back to the hook. It was about 20 ft from the barn where the box was at.

I could be wrong but isn't the milage all based on the conductivity and thickness of the wire you are electrifying; thus, the joules are the only thing that matters because you choose the wire that's being electrified.

Just another way to look at this, as a Paramedic when we're doing CPR & attach an AED to you, or manually defibrilate you, we shock you at 200j then 300j, & max out at 360j which is what we continue shocking you at. Trying to smack the heart with electricity telling it to knock off the funky rhythms & beat the way you're supposed to.

Label it as electrified or you could catch charges. We have to have tag live fence wires when installing when they are within (boss says) reasonable distances from public roads and sidewalks. There's a law, he just doesn't know the legal distance so we put the signs up even in pastures.

He would grad 110 and tell you it was off by a volt. He would be right. He had 3 rows of teeth they were so bad. His name was Adolph before it was a bad thing.

My uncle was working his land in Northern Ireland during the troubles. He noticed a British Army patrol tactically heading towards him around the boundary of the field. He stopped working as two soldiers approached him. Things were a bit tense as they questioned him about his identity and where he lived, had he noticed anything unusual etc. Then they asked if that was his electric fence across the gap? He said it was and the two soldiers smiled and one said ...'our sergeant just caught a shock to his balls when he crossed it!' Must ask my uncle if he remembers what the joules were.

@@RobertSzasz had to do some digging on this one let me know if I've got it kind of right. so Joules would be a kin to horse power of a a car but watts would be more like the mpg of the car. basically I'm seeing joules being explained as a measurement of power/work and watts as a measurement of electricity used.

Actually, you should pay attention to both. Because why have a French charger? That puts out a higher shock, but not go the distance. So you should pay attention to the distance and how much they put out and find the one that works best for you. Just don't pay attention to how much it puts out for the shock

Jumper cable manufacturers do the same thing. They claim the cables are good for 500, 800, 1500 Amperes even, whereas the conductors on all of them are only 10 or 15mm^2 in cross section. Look at the wire cross section surface (or wire gauge), the claimed amperage can be just as bogus and made up as the fence wire mileage.

What is joules on electric fence? Think of joules as the horsepower needed to carry a load. The length of the fence, how old the fence is, and how the fence is constructed should determine how many joules are needed. Typical recommendation is one joule per mile of fence. Keep in mind that bigger is better, until the point that induction occurs.

You have to pay attention to both. Read your damn owners manual. That half Jewel rating is probably an average over selected distances. If it says half a joule at 5 miles it's probably closer to that rating at 3 or 4 MI. Anything shorter and you're going to have more power going through because there's less resistance. If it's a good brand it will tell you what rating at what distance and with what wire.
