Here are some top tips we have found from our own journey to finding the perfect wood burner for our home. Buying and installing the stove in the way we did saved around 40-50% compared to the 'off the shelf' option.

Looks amazing! We've had a very similar (but dark green) Clearview woodburner in my parents house for 18+ years now and it's still going strong with only basic maintenance. It's incredibly hot when in full swing. It should b advised that these are only really needed in larger, more rural houses. You'd boil to death otherwise!

Ours is a Clearview Vision 500. (With the top cowl - not flat top) It’s warmed our small cottage for the past 25 years. Despite being an expensive stove, (even 2nd hand Clearview stoves never seen to drop value much at all) it is definitely the best money I have ever spent. It gives so much heat for a comparatively small amount of wood. Very simple to operate, maintain and clean. A truly awesome clean burning, clear glass machine. Watching the flames is just mesmerising! Two tips: 1. Only burn well seasoned hard wood logs. 2. Once lit with the bottom slide vent fully open, (we don’t often open the round vent) gradually, (every 5 minutes or so) push in the air slide vent until virtually closed or fully closed in order to get the maximum heat and clearest glass. When the flames are hovering and dancing over to top of the logs, then that’s your optimum heat and viewing pleasure! It’s often more enjoyable to watch than TV!! 3. I gave my stove its own underfloor air supply which vents from an outside wall, under the floor, to directly under the stove. I’m only guessing that this was a good idea to reduce draughts.😊

I bought the Clear view 400 which is fine for our lounge and conservatory area . My reasons for buying it are 1 steel not cast iron this means quicker body heating time so it reaches optimal burn much sooner 2 the heat wash system means a cleaner glass and 3 a steel body never cracks i worked on the railway for 40 years and many signal boxes and guards brakes had pot bellied stoves . cracks at hinge and flue rings was was common after years of use.. Just because wood burners look the same does not mean the technology inside is the same.

Nice Video, Stoves are very easy to make from old calor Gas Bottles, my best one was made from an old milk churn still used after 30 years of use. Made a few for smaller spaces from Fire extinguishers. The ones your looking at are well over priced but this is rip of Britain & most people just acsept any price as they must have the latest trends. Also a Sawdust burner is a great stove the heat these give out can not be beaten. In the past people made them there selves from old oil drums for free. When I was a young Lad most people had a round small stove in the middle of there Kitchen they where mostly Yellow probally to look modern. I've also noticed British people put far to much wood on the fire. The secret is lots of ash a few inches deep with just a small amount of wood burning on the ash bed.

No it’s not cheaper unless you have your own source of firewood. Unfortunately for the time being gas is quite a bit cheaper than most alternative options. Compared to electric I would guess that yes it would be cheaper per kWh, unless you spend £2-3k on a stove that is.

It's a very common mistake to reset a stove into an old fire place. With a stove, it's not the fire that heats the room, it's the stove itself. It's far better to sit it in the room and let the heat radiate from it. Recessing like this, most of the heat goes into heating the wall around and above.

Before committing to a stove, check it meets the emissions standard if your home is in a smoke free zone (virtually all urban areas in UK). Also building regulations need to be meet if the stove output is 5KW or greater. Below that you do not need a dedicated air supply (hole through your house wall) to feed the stove. You also need to have a carbon monoxide alarm in the room you have the stove (any size stove). A stove is great, but also remember if you are to use it as your primary heat source rather than as a supplement/decorative addition to your home, you will need to buy and store a lot of really dry wood. For a winter you are probably looking at 6 of those large builders bags of wood. If you have a garage you can store it there. Or an outside storage area off of the soil with a rudimentary cover to keep the worst of the rain off of it. You want plenty of air flow to help dry out your fuel wood. Sourcing your own wood is not impossible. But to prep it you need space and confidence to use axes and probably a chain saw. Those in particular, you really need to be trained to use and have the full protective kit.
@lessmith3718
@lessmith3718 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for enlighten me about the size mine will be about 4.5 so no need for air supply from outside....Will I still need to inform the council. Thank you.
@andrewhead6267
@andrewhead6267 2 жыл бұрын
@@lessmith3718 I believe the installation does not need to be notified to the council, if you are using an existing chimney flue. If you are installing a new flue, you might be best getting advice from building control. You don’t need to advise them if you are lining an existing flue with a new metal liner. But you need to place a sign saying what you have installed and when in the building. These are normally like a plastic information tag screwed permanently within the building. The best place is near your electricity consumer unit. Your carbon monoxide monitor also now needs to be screwed to the wall in the room with the stove.

+Old Flames of Beverley Yeah I know, some were more than that! I think that as well as 904 liner that would have included insulation and possibly scaffolding, plus we needed just over 10m of flue. Either way, we certainly didn't spend that much! Loving the clearview though, can't fault it.

It looks a bit wide for the size of your fire opening more so on the right hand side it may just be the angle of the camera, all you need to do to get it past is get a chimney sweep they by law give you a certificate so you don’t need building control a 6 inch flue pipe is too small for the size of you BTUs of your fire do you have 200mm on both sides of the fire

I am HETAS but would not fit your own stove equipment. It's like asking a mechanic to fit some stuff you bought on eBay. Your guy is doing himself a disservice

I can see where you are coming from however all the fitters I contacted were more than happy to offer a fit only price. I did run through my list of parts I was ordering with him to make sure all was fine and at the end of the day everyone was happy. Not sure there is any disservice in it especially now we've sent several other customers his way! TRC

+LabRat6619 I think the only reason you would not fit a stove because you miss out on the mark-up for providing the materials.
