A way to extend the life of your brushes is to apply your base tone to your canvas with a rag instead of a brush. It covers faster and you'll get a nice mottled tone.

I have always heard, at least back in the day, that oil painters took good care of their brushes and they also used Kolinsky Sable brushes from the mink in deep artic Russia. Millions of the mink just hard to get to in the trapping there of, due to the treacherously cold brutal area conditions they live in. It is true that the various hog, i.e. boar bristle brushes are the backbone of the oil painters industry and always have been, second is the badger brushes!!! As for an oil painters painting area that is what is left full of paint and splatter and are seldom cleaned up. Sometimes you even write the paint combinations on the splatter to remind you what paints you used to acquire that specific hue when starting out. The brushes were always well taken care of with soaps, conditioners and left well oiled to keep them for a long as possible. reshaping and keeping the water out of the ferrules so as not to rust them out. Not standing them with the bristles pointed up in a vertical manner but in a horizontal manner. Now that may have changed in this era of we don't need to take care of anything anymore it is a mere drop in the bucket for us to spend $60, to $100 dollars for a descent boar bristle brush then when we have used it without cleaning it we may just toss it away like yesterdays trash after a dozen or so uses!! The days of frugality are of a bygone era I would now posture!!! I took good care of my bristle brushes that were presented to me by Thomas Kinkade, who said to me that the secret to a good painting is always to take care of your brushes and they will take care of you. I look forward to more of your instruction.

Princeton came out with a line of synthetic brushes called Catalyst Polytip bristle brushes (series 6400) , similarly priced. They are Amazing - they hold the best edges & points I've seen.

any brush you use in oil paint should ALWAYS be stored with oil on the bristles, especially real hair brushes. neatsfoot oil is best if it is not long term storage however I was a sign painter for many years and I use motor oil because it does not dry out and makes your brushes sit well even for years. And never mix oil and water brushes-it will ruin the "snap" in your oil brushes-have different sets for oil and water based paints. :)

Hi, I watched your video on choosing brushes for oil painting twice. I have a question, first, you did not say which brand of Bristle brushes you like. And is it Hog hair bristle brushes you like? I am new to brushes. ;-) Second you didn't mention what brand of paints would you recommend? Reeves (Micheals), Blick, Da Vinci, Schminke, Grumbacher, Rembrant, M. Graham, Williamsburg or Old Holland? I know the paints will last me 3 years or more. I'd want a high pigment load paint that is lightfast.. I am going to buy the Dynasty Black Gold nylon brushes and the Escoda Sable brushes for details. But I don't know which brand of Bristle brushes to buy or paints.

Being an acrylic painter, all of us acrylic painters are petrified of leaving our loaded brushes alone even for a bathroom break. After the first five or so destroyed hardened brushes....you learn. 😆😆😆😉

Hi, I have a question, or your thoughts at least. If you hardly use any medium when painting, except a bit of linseed or stand oil, and turpenoid but again scarcely even that. You paint, dry, paint dry and so on, can you spray quick dry, to help it dry faster in between painting?

I use only synthetic brushes for moral reasons. The technology has come a long way and there are some beautiful brushes out there!

Hmmm..I'm left a little confused. Is he suggesting buying Black Gold flats AND bristle brushes in the same sizes or what? And I've seen him use rounds on some of his painting demos, not all flats. What brand and sizes does he suggest for the rounds for serious but beginner and on a budget, using mostly canvas sizes 11 by 14 and 16 by 20?? thanks anyone.

Stefan, you mentioned that you will need to replace your brushes at some point, however I see other videos of "oil painters" that brag that some of their brushes are 15,20,30, even 40 years old. So I'm a little confused.

Ok so for a while now, I've been struggling with my brushes. And by that, I mean that every time I go to lay a brushstroke, it seems to just scrape off the paint, leaving behind a massive scratchy brush stroke that has gone all the way through to the canvas surface. It always leaves my paintings looking like a pissed off cat used it as a scratching post.... So the question is, am I using the wrong brushes (I use hog hair), am I pushing too hard on my strokes? Should I do a layer and let it dry, then paint the other layers like you would with acrylic? What? Please, and thank you, it's been quite frustrating to me for a good while, now.

Stefan I’m burning through my bristled filberts ! Help !!! Sorry Boss, I disagree with your observations on oil painters. I for one, a small time oil painter with some 30 paintings to my credit, always clean my brushes & the pallette at the end of the painting day But certainly thanks for your tips.

Give me any brush and I can adapt to the way it flows and feels. As long I can paint with it I'm happy.
