Searching for the best lab coat for a chemistry lab? For both student freshmen general chemistry and more advanced organic chemistry labs, there are a few clear winners when it comes to lab coat design features.
First: the lab coat material you choose makes all the difference. 100% cotton is usually recommended, but check your lab’s guidelines because they may be different. Nomex and FR-treated cotton can also be good options, but are more expensive. DO NOT wear a high polyester content lab coat to a chemistry lab with Bunsen burners!
Second: metal snap front closures are SO MUCH better than buttons. They won’t melt in a fire, and they can be ripped open easily to get you out in a hurry. Chemists prefer these 4-to-1 in our survey.
Third: long knit cuffs on your sleeves, or elastic cuffed sleeves keeps your wrists covered from drips of acids and solvents. Straight cuffs pull back easily and they also hang down making you prone to knocking over glassware and making a mess!
Fourth: a bonus to have - is a Howie style closed collar. This is close to a chef’s collar and protects your chest much better in case of an explosion.

What about the pockets? There are those with outer pockets and those with the pockets inside and/or vented. Anything stored in pockets may slip out from outer pockets.

What about polypropylene as the material?

That has pretty good chemical resistance in most cases, but will melt easily around flames. In general those are only good for very specific chemical lab situations. So check the chemical compatibility charts with what you're using!

Is it water repellant?

The one we made is a little water repellant. You can put a bead of water on it for hours without it soaking in, but if you break the surface tension it will eventually soak in.
