Thank you for this explanation. I am a beginner and have already came across a pattern that said put a stitch marker here! I had no idea what a stitch is so I didn’t do that one. I’ve only been crocheting about a week. I’m still working on wash clothes to get my stitch looser and even. Don’t know why I waited till 65 to get into this hobby. Having great fun! You’re a great teacher!😊

I’m only a month month crocheting, but I have 4 favorites already: plastic locking ones to hold the yarn during breaks and end of rows/rounds, metal light bulb ones for the same purpose but for finer yarns, split ring ones for marking increases/decreases/counting stitches, and yarn for helping track rows. I don’t even want to try the charm ones - I can see them catching on the yarn.

I usually split ring markers, because they're quick; however, I sometimes use the safety pin kind for more complicated "pinning".

Just an FYI. Be careful when using the safety pin. Depending on the yarn type or sometimes just how long it takes you to get back to the project, the spring can sometimes catch in the yarn.

I have attention deficit (not great...). Concentrating and keeping track of number of stitches is annoyingly difficult so I've been putting off starting what I want to start as the attention deficit has been getting worse lately. I believe this will help tremendously and have already ordered some. Thank you for the video.

Hi Sandra! That is a great question. It really depends on what the stitch marker is being used for. Are you counting the number or rows in which case it doesn't matter where you put the marker. Are you trying to identify that first or last stitch space? If this is the case I will make that first or last stitch and then instantly place the stitch marker through the hole that I would place my crochet hook. I think that would be the key for you. Place the stitch marker through the stitch space you would place your crochet hook through. I hope this helps! Best wishes and happy crocheting.
