Just a thought - if you want to consider off-road riding, you need to understand that learning and gaining those specific skills/techniques is nearly as much of a task and as time consuming as just learning to ride on the road! BOTH require significant investment of time, effort and energy.

The constant fawning over the automatic gearbox makes me wonder why ride a motorcycle at all, if you just want it to slowly become a self-driving Tesla. Using the clutch and shifting gears is part of the experience, part of the endless curve of personal improvement as a rider, same as when driving a car with a manual. Choosing an automatic is like saying "i dont want to learn to feel the full experience of the machine, i want the half experience because its easier".

Good choice ; ultimately the throttle is under your control A fireblade doesn't need dct or a quickshifter in the road 1st gear will do 80mph , 2nd 110mph & 3rd.....well you don't need to leave 2bd or 3rd on the fireblade people told me to get a 1 litre 1st , i got a 650 , 6 weeks in I got bored & fed up of shifting through gears, then got a 900 , same crap in 3 months I've now got a 1 litre & lost a bit of cash You'll get bored of the 650 even though it's a stellar machine

I had a CBR600FX which was the older gen bike of what you picked. I used to do clutch-less up-shifts without a problem for maximum acceleration. The handling was great and that made it safe to ride fast IMHO. Speed plenty fast enough, but had to get the revs up which could require a lot of down shifting for say overtaking. And this kind of bike makes you want to ride at high speed to get the thrills. The more upright bikes likely have more low down torque and wind pressure to give a good acceleration and sensation of speed at legal road speeds. My favourite bike out of the many that I owned.

I won't lie that scooter looking bike looks way comfortable. Mounting and dismounting a loaded bike in full protective gear is kind of a bugger, that bike looks like an easier step through than mounting even the shortest cruisers. Also the dct is really nice, even off road. It takes some getting used to but it frees your mind and body from a lot of thoughts and motions that would otherwise distract you from the road. I would have taken the Africa Twin :)

Really like this series as bikes are so cool, but most car fans don't really know much about them. Good to see someone literally from the start learn about them as we can all learn with you. However, if you are actually gonna get into bikes please step up the audio quality. It was all over the place. Sometimes low, sometimes real loud, sometimes muffled. It is hard to watch because of that.

Good bike selection. Suggestion now is to take a light dirt bike for a few months and develop reasonable bike skills: handling, sliding, riding over rocks, logs etc. Then go back to bigger bikes in a year with those necessary skills.

Good choice Paul! I’d have gone for the Blade or Africa Twin, but I’ve been riding for 30 years. As a new rider the 650 is spot on. I’m still not sure about DCT on a bike though. My last two cars have been dual clutch and I love it, but I remain to be convinced of its value on a bike. I don’t use a bike to commute, just a weekend toy so perhaps it’s of less value to me.

You can do clutchless up shifts easily on any bike, especially after you take off in first gear, you can go clutchless. You don't have to pull the clutch lever in every time, motorcycles have transmissions/gears that allow for this unlike cars with syncros.

Just because it’s a 1000cc doesn’t mean it’s not for beginners as you can start off in a lower power mode and go from there 👍

"Just because it's a 1000 doesn't mean it isn't for beginners" -see, that's how people end up in crash compilations on KZfaq. Awful advice lmao. It's also a hell of a lot of money, better to get something that's easier to actually learn proper riding skill on and figure out what kind of riding style you actually like, before you go to an extreme end like a 1000 supersport. Perhaps he's more into nakeds or adv bikes who knows. The 650R is a much better platform for moving up the ranks later on.
