What do you really need for nature journaling and what is a waste of money? How to choose the right art supplies for YOU? During this live video I will share some of my tips for choosing nature journal supplies and I will also tap into the wealth of ideas and experience of the nature journal club community. What are some common mistakes to avoid? What products have failed on you? What are some supplies that are worth their weight in gold? Now is your chance to share your knowledge and help other nature journalers get the right tools for the job.

I only use synthetic or Kolinsky sable travel brushes small portable and great to paint with 🥰

@@MarleyPeifer small 2 or 4 oz nalgene wide mouth bottle which can also carry used water out home also collapsible shot size water cup but you can just dip brush in Nalgene bottle as the wide mouth is big enough 🥰

Regarding brushes, I don't think I'll ever bring a traditional brush and cup of water into the field ever again! Once I got used to water brushes, I couldn't go back! It was a learning curve though--I find it much harder to control the amount of water in the brush, oddly enough! For some reason, even though water is continuously flowing onto the bristles via capillary action, it never seems to be enough and I find the brushes to be drier than I want, but when I squeeze them, I get either nothing or a big drip of water. I have gotten better at controlling it though, and I've also learned to WAIT and make sure my brush isn't too wet or too saturated with pigment before putting it to paper. Painting at home, I do sometimes use regular brushes, though the convenience of water brushes means I usually reach for them first unless I want to paint something really big.

I think I am in the exact same place Susan. I have developed workarounds to the water flow issue and the convenience and simplicity ends up outweighing the water issues for me. What size do you use?

@@MarleyPeifer I have a set of small, medium, and large Pentel brushes and use them all. I try to reach for the large most often, because I find the watercolor comes out the best when you use the largest brush possible for large areas. However, I really like the medium and small for details. I can get really, really fine and pale lines with the small brush--my absolute favorite was when I was journaling a spider laying silk on a leaf (an egg case?) I was able to use the finest, palest of blue-gray lines to get the texture of the bright white silk. So I don't care what anyone says about only needing the large brush--that small will never leave my side!
