How about measuring the "Ripple" again at a bandwidth that includes the switching frequency and at full load !

I really liked this video, as well as the overall test. For your next video, could you explore if the regular 'wall-wart' power supplies can have ripple reduced by using clip-on ferrite chokes ?

I hope that you can soon test icepower/purifi/Pascal power supplies compared to a linear power supply 😊

Good job 👍. But this measurements do not represent noise and ringing at hundreds of kilohertz or megahertz, which can be generated by SMPS at some load. For linear power supply this would be good technique. You can test SMPS with FFT analiser first to understand the emitted noise spectrum. One more thing is the coupling capacitor inside of the SMPS. Power supply can be quiet, but can bring some noise from the grid.
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 Жыл бұрын
Correct, but Rew does supports 0 to 50 Khz so not too bad for a free software beyond that you will need FFT analyzer as you mention Luckily for Audio he biggest problems are usually in that range.

will connecting a switching power supply to a balanced isolation transformer improve it's performance? (will correcting some of the input AC ripples benefit the DC output of a switching or a linear power supply?)

Great ideas laid out in an informative video. I always wished I had an oscilloscope to measure noise. I make all my own linear power supplies using software modelling to shoot for low noise, but never have measured to see if they perform as expected. This shows the steps to build an effective test rig for a few hundred $. Nicely done.

Great video I also purchased same adjustable Voltage power supply , I recently purchased IFI Audio grade power supply V1 15V but for some reason wont boot up My Topping DX3-Pro + Dac . With power supply watch another uTube Channel this one have very low noise and ripple . Now it powers up perfectly better sound stage highs are much less harsh to ears..

I purchased the ifi power supply for my Cambridge audio 540p that I've just upgraded, but it didn't work with it, as the 540p needs a AC power supply & the ifi is a DC power supply, my mistake 😢, another Great video from you AAAAA+👍

Hi Gabster, I followed you... very cool DIY streamers and speakers, planning to build my own. I like that you are very scientific and knowledgeable.. Some "objectivists" (ASR) would say Ian Canada is way overkill because there is so much distortion in speakers and power amps and you can buy a Topping DAC with switch mode PSU that measures perfectly for 349 USD.... What do you think Ian Canada stuff adds.... that people are missing... (planning my own build, scaled don of yours...if nothing else it is fun!)
@Pete.across.the.street
@Pete.across.the.street Жыл бұрын
I would take anything that ASR says with a grain of salt. They really don't know what they are talking about most of the time. They also said a $600 preamp measures "perfect" and is as good as a $10,000 preamp. I have heard the $600 preamp next to a $3000 one, the $600 didn't even come close. If half of what they claim was true, there would be a lot of hifi companies out of business.

@@Pete.across.the.street@ Pete from across the street - I agree that the 3K preamp USD sounds better. Amir can be a little fast to judge sometimes - but I have not seen a single engineer disputing his audio measurements. Gabster also seems very scientific, though I would argue above that we should measure the change in sound from a DAC with different SMPS', as we are not listening to the power supply, but the DAC. However, I was just curious, about what "philosophy" Gabster has to measurements...
@Pete.across.the.street
@Pete.across.the.street Жыл бұрын
@@jungtarcph his measurements are accurate but usually he is measuring the wrong thing and uses inaccurate assumptions and comes to conclusions that his own data doesn't support. One of his reviews he was testing jitter on an analog output, another he didn't recommend an item because he measured something that the item didn't claim to do, another he tried to measure emi on a cable that was unplugged. Just because other engineers haven't contraindicated him doesn't mean his conclusions are true. Most probably don't know him or care enough to chime in.

@@jungtarcph that is interesting, do you have a link to measurements of ian canada products that show that there is a lot of distortion in ian canada products? I also use ian canada products myself and am curious, by the way, I don't hear any distortion in the music here and have owned many da converters in the past, from high-end to cheap.

@@Pete.across.the.street I think there might be other things that ngs to measure, but I have still not seen anyone saying what ASR does wrong. My personal philosophy is that sound character is hard to measure, and so is how it pairs with other equipment. But I like to see a person of science come up with a better way.

Very interesting video. I installed 10 gauge dedicated circuits and then I thought I have a power conditioner and tried to determine what gauge wire is used to connect the various outlets on the back of their unit. I asked the manufacturer, Transparent, and they said it was proprietary but was told they use a combination of 10 gauge and 14 gauge wires inside their power management box. I use a 10 gauge power cord which they furnished to connect the unit to the Wall outlet. My guess is they use 10 gauge initially and then branch out to the various outlets inside the unit with 14 gauge. For the short length within the Power box do you think it matters not having a continuation of 10 gauge electrical wire, assuming they use 14 gauge?

Great review here. Thank you. Just curious if the ripple varies with the voltage in your variable PSU. I guess what I am alluding to is if the higher voltage Ifi ipower switching has even lower noise / ripple level than 5 volt.
