A nice summary, Sweetwater. Observations / questions from this multi-decade audio/video engineer and musician: . 1. Vinyl ear cushions can decay, so there is something to be said for fuzzy cloth ear cushions. But, hygiene might be improved with vinyl ear cushions. . 2. Does the manufacturer offer replacement ear cushions that are easy to install and stay on securely? . 3. All cables wear and eventually develop an open circuit. How easy is it to replace the cable? . 4. Can the headphone have either an interchangeable short straight, long straight or coiled cable? . 5. How difficult is it to convert from 3.5mm TRS phone plug to 1/4" TRS phone plug with a threaded screw-on adapter, and can the adapter be adhered to the cable when not in use? . 6. How tight does the headphone fold for transportation? . 7. When something goes wrong, is there an economical repair path with the manufacturer, or do you just throw 'em away?

Great comment - these are all additional things you can consider when looking at headphones. I find these sorts of more detail-oriented considerations to help when I’ve narrowed the field down to a couple of choices and need to make a final decision. Thanks for posting! Mitch

I still haven’t found anything better than Sony MDR-7506. Every time that I’ve tried something else thinking that I am buying something better, I always end up going back to Sony. The clarity and natural tone of the vocals is superb. I also like that they aren’t bass heavy. There is no boomy bottom end, just clean lows that is full and uncolored. There is a reason why for decades that 7506’s are still the studio standard.

I didn't have a clear idea about closed and open headphones till now. Thank you for the very nicely, easily explained explaination. I've always used closed headphones. I'have never used them for mixing as the sound of my 1963b Fender Jazz Bass overwhelmed everything in the cans. I paid a lot, but my Electro-Voice speakers sound GREAT..I'm 69 years young and I enjoy 3 piece Rock Bands so my Bass always has to move a lot of air. But it will NEVER be so loud that you can't hear the Lead Guitar or vocals.

I love my MDR-7506's. They are not what most people would choose to listen to music casually, as they are not your typical bass-heavy headphone. On the contrary, they are EXTREMELY flat. I find that if I can get my mix to sound good on the 7506, it's going to sound great pretty much everywhere else. Only downfall of them is that a lot of headphones, the earpads do wear out after a number of years. However, you can buy soft, high-quality aftermarket replacement earpads that are even better than the Sony-supplied ones.

are studio headphones good to just listen to music? I'd like to listen to music with a thought that that's how it is supposed to sound, without and extra highs and specially extra bass like many do. Would studio headphones (ideally closed back) be good for me? And do I need an amp when I plug them into my PC?
@sweetwater
@sweetwater 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! You can definitely listen to music using studio quality headphones. If the impedance spec is over 100 ohms or so, you will likely need a headphone amp as well in order to get adequate volume. Feel free to reach out if we can help with anything else. Thanks! Yep, I have been youtube hunting ..mass video reviews and comparisons and I have 99% made my choice with the 770”s pros! I am just about to dive into hopefully making my own music focusing mainly playing guitar and producing on the laptop. I also want them to enjoy music while ear training how to play what I hear so I hope I have made the right choice. Hope they work out for you!

@gregorywilson3318
@gregorywilson3318 3 жыл бұрын
@@kadosuniverse No, actually I have been on the fence about which to get but it was between the 80 ohm and the 32 ohm. I have decided to go with the thirty as I am wanting an all ‘rounder using with a laptop and having the option of using my phone for listening to spotify especially I have started ear training (I want to play what I hear on guitar instead of looking it up). I more importantly I prefer more volume without needing more power such as using an amp for headphones. I will be going for the Focus Rite Scarlett Solo. It took me a long time to decide I am definitely in good hands with the Beyedynamic dt770 pro’s. They offer the most for everything I want! I am about to venture into music production. I much to learn. Do you have any tips or advice?! I just downloaded a tone quiz and am liking the challenge. Do excuse me for such a lengthy (that’s what she said) response.

Shopping for good headphones online kind of sucks. It's hard to know if they are too tight or will pinch the tops of your ears making them unbearable after an hour or 2. I feel like the Sony 7506 are probably the safest choice for all around satisfaction, but AKG 553 and DT 770 are appealing to me for the 100 maybe 200 price I never understood multi million dollar looking studios having 50$ headphones reserved for world famous millionaire recording artists. I see those gold akg in videos of studios a lot

sennheisers' hd600 is open. Generally studio heaphones are closed-back because isolation is very very important when recording. And also I think they are reaching out to the average customer that's not working on a studio but rather in his room . Opens sound better and have better soundstage but they leak a lot of sound and hear a lot ot stuff from outside if mixing at low volume. closed back are just more versatile while open backs fit a more specific role especially in mastering as they emulate way better the speakers
