Etsy Store: ewellacres.ets... Hello and welcome to another episode of Ewell Acres. Today were talking about the best type of honeybees to choose when getting started with beekeeping. You’ll want to consider why you want to get into beekeeping and the reason for raising bees.
Different types of bees have different traits that help to determine what species of bees you want to keep and why certain types have become so popular. Some of the different traits include: Production of honeybees, location of hives, local climate bees will need to endure, legality of owning bees in your area, temperament of honeybees, disease resistance of honeybees, quality of products produced, history of honeybee species, reproduction rate, floral food source availability.
Thanks for joining us as we talk about the best type of honeybees and traits of those honeybees. Don’t forget to subscribe and click on the bell for future notification of videos added. We look forward to seeing you next time.

Hello, I am a beekeeper in a continental area, at an altitude of 500 to 1300 meters above sea level, with strong winters and a very changeable spring. I am a beekeeper exclusively from Carniolan. I keep a bee on 5 to 8 frames of brood throughout the year and have honey to extract (as seen in my video). Beekeepers must understand that they are beekeeping with a bee that is suitable for their climate. When we imported the Italian bee, problems began with the death of bee colonies, regardless of the fact that the Italian bees are strong but eat all the food. The Italian bee is excellent for warmer areas and longer honeying periods. Carniolan and other bees are aggressive if something is wrong in the hive.

I completely agree with this entirely. Just like with plants you want to get a variety of vegetable that grows well in your region you also want to get a variety of bee that is well suited an native to that region as well.

Hello, I assume that your climate is ideal for the Italian race of bees, it is an excellent bee. After the race of bees, the technique of beekeeping is very important. I never force the bee to develop as I want, I simply follow it according to what the community of bees can do. and it is the "magic wand" for a healthy and successful bee, believe it or not.@@pilsplease7561

I have been told by others that Carniolans would work where I live but have not kept them so Im thinking about giving it a gamble and trying them as other bee keepers and the local university told me they should be fine and Im inclined to give it a try. @@denodkgoro8124

I do really like carniolians. It has been my personal experience that commercial bee keepers tend to lean towards carnolians and hobbyists tend to prefer italians. depending on the region as well they tend to beekeep in.

As much as I love native pollinators and try to promote plantings to encourage them I agree the honey bee is probably the most important farmer in out modern food chain and factor to help fight world hunger.

I'm trying the Saskatraz for the first time in a Layens hive. I'll find out if they can survive the winter. So far it's been a wild winter. They were bringing in pollen a couple of days ago here in Massachusetts.

I am an American but have a small property in Malaysia I was thinking about starting a beehive now what type of bee would be good and doesn't matter that it is outside of the United States
@ewellacres
@ewellacres 3 жыл бұрын
it does not matter that bees are outside the United States. there are hundreds of different varieties of Honeybees that love all over the world. as to what bees would do well in Malaysia I don't know the answer to that. For a warmer tropical climate the most common bees in Florida are going to be Italian bees. how that translates to Malaysia I don't know. I am more familiar with varieties of honey bees and climates associated with western Europe and North America. if at all possible get bees that are native to Malaysia or have been there for multiple generations. it will help to better deal with major diseases or insect pressure in that region of the world that the Honeybees in North America or western Europe would not normally encounter. as to the legality of importing bees into Malaysia I could not give you any information on. I am only familiar with United States import laws when it comes to beekeeping. I wish you the best of luck.

In regards to your comment you are correct it is possible that I misspoke going off hand in exaggeration of how many species of bees there there. Officially according to entomologists when you look at the taxonomy of honey bees there are 8 species officially recognized with 43 distinct sub species officially recognized at this time. The inter breeding and hybridization of honey bees has made it very difficult to completely recognize other honeybee subspecies at this current time. So it is possible that more could exist however these are taxonomy of current honeybees recognized among the majority of entomologists. One paper that can help to help explain this is in the link. wgbis.ces.iisc.ernet.in/biodiversity/sahyadri_enews/newsletter/issue46/bibliography/30_Taxonomy%20and%20Distribution%20of%20Different%20Honeybee%20Species.pdf
