In this video we look at different types of darts available today. Discussing Tungsten percentage, length, weight, shape and grip.
My channel is exclusive to darts only content. I create my content as I simply love to play darts and want to help other dart players improve with my own channel.
All my video's are based on how to play darts as well as advise on equipment and general darts setup with the aim to guide any new players in their darting journey as well as provide more experienced or even professional dart players with dart content to help improve.
I throw around an 80 average myself with my left hand due to injury and dartitis in my right arm.
I may, on occasion, use footage from the Professional darts corporation (the P.D.C) as well as The British Darts organisation, WDF and Modus. These are used under fair use legislation, and all credit should be given to the rightful creators.

Great advice as usual Daniel. I thought I was a straight barrel player who needed lots of grip and a slightly heavier barrel (24-26g). It took me to do a mission precision session to realise that a bomb shaped barrel and 21g weight was the right dart for me. Also my set up is a moulded stem flight system. This was probably the best thing I've done in my short darting career so far. Would highly recommend it and it probably works out to be a cheaper alternative as I got to use loads of sets of darts. 👍🏼🎯

This is an extremely informative video and one that I’m very grateful for 🙃 I’ve been playing for around 10months and have been guilty of massively over tinkering, especially recently…I hit my 14th maximum last night with a set of Micro Gripped 16g barrels from darts clearance and they are going extremely well for me right now, at this point I’m certain of a few things, I prefer lighter darts and believe my wrist and fingers are a big part of my throw like buntings, my last dart trip outside of my house I used a front weighted 22g Luke Humphries dart and played abysmally, think I’ve had a few misconceptions in my mind so I’ve gone back to the drawing board and the info covered in this video will help me no doubt 👍🏻

Great vid mate. I’ve been playing with a 22g Winmau Steve Beaton dart for a couple of years as my first set and recently bought some Target RVB echo darts in 21g. Almost the exact same shape and balance, just more grippy. I didn’t have to adjust my throw at all.

Great vid Daniel. As you know, I experimented with my darts by modifying inexpensive sets until I found the right weight, balance etc. Then I had custom darts made to my specs and they are working well. Just need to practice and perfect my technique. As you stated in our session, i could shoot a 70 average. Well, i do shoot lots of legs in the 70s and even a 90 once in a while, but I'm still shooting those bad legs in the 40s. So frustrating, but still plugging away. Cheers mate

Thanks for this video, Daniel (and basically all your others, really the best tips that are around - some day I'll book one of them video coaching sessions). I'm actually more than guilty of this "I've played badly with this set, let's change it all from the ground up"-syndrome. I think it's a mental thing, like change your darts, start from scratch, it'lll work out and I've actually had such experiences now and then. I started out with 22g RD Javelins, then moved up to 24g Gilding darts and always thought, I'd need something like a crossover between those two. I now own the 24g Harrows Shard90 and am really satisfied with the shape and the grip! But flights/stems is a completely different story. Seems like I still haven't found what suits me best

Just found your channel tonight and yes it was an eye opener. I’ve been using MVG 24 g’s for a couple of years and found that that weight and particular design of dart was getting me the results I required. When I’ve had an off night I’ve reverted to my old faithfuls Red Dragon’s Javalin Spectrons which I’ve used for a while now. I found myself over throwing my darts and got frustrated and so bought a set of 26 g’s thinking this would really help but it made my throw worse so went straight back to the MVG’s. I’ve also used my sons Snakebites (also 24g’s) and had very consistent positive results. Having watched your video I’m going to purchase a set of 22g’s (it’s ok I won’t bill you) and see if it makes a difference. If that fails then I’m back to look at my throw!

Great info Daniel! I started in 2018 with brass darts, then here in Canada everyone says start with 25g so I did that, then up to 26 I went...many expensive sets later I realized my throw was terrible, and I switched to 18-20g darts to learn how to throw properly, got into soft tip, my throw was much better and my avg. went right up. Now I prefer 19g darts for both steel and soft tip, and I prefer straight barrels (my main set are Duzza Gen 1 18g with 1g of tungsten putty to make them 19g). Prior to that I preferred Unicorn grippers, or Asp's, or some front weighted shapes, but now they just feel awkward for me. Straight barrels feel much better. Also important to experiment with diff shapes of flights and diff lengths of stems! I prefer Steve Beaton oversized pear shaped flights and extra short stems (on a barrel around 48-49mm). I use condor axe (standard SHORT) for soft tip. But wow does it make a difference in land angles and how they fly to the board and can make a huge difference overall! Know your set up preferences! Points too! Also worth mentioning I have many sets that appeal to me (visually, or feel) that just don't work for me. Sometimes, the dart you do best with isn't what you would visualize what it should be etc. Anyways, love the darts! Much love and respect from Niagara Falls Canada! Shout out to all my darts fam worldwide.

Good video and interesting as we all can keep going with changing darts all time ..Personally ive played since around 1974 and on and off still playing today well in my 60s . Have purchased a number sets new darts in my time as well as swapped darts and gave darts away also in the past Anyhow always can be ongoing , in younger days played with mainly best days a 20g dart nowadays 24g darts with my last set a 24g dart and done well and not so well with same set BUT i stuck with that very same set for over 5 years as got fed up changing sets for another weight etc ..But just recent ive went to different darts but similar and 24g darts but changed stems stems i changed for did not have same balance in set i played for over 5 yrs with ..stems i used play were nylon medium stems and went to alu- stems again medium length but a slimmer stem , dart barrel is slim also . Just changed other day and see how i do with them after few weeks ill know for sure and have hit a number times 3 x darts in bullseye with my set of over 5 yrs ..But see how things go as said nowadays i play for fun and always was a believer in staying with one set as guy said in post its not the darts when u go off form but you ..Anyhow all the best in your search for that perfect dart / stem / flights ..Its never ending for so many but enjoyable at same time .

I rear grip and use slightly front heavy , aggressively gripped harrows Supergrip Ultras, i switched a lot before but I found these a good aid to my slippy sweaty leather-ish fingers . Sometimes when my release is slightly off they still can land flat!! But that's rather rare, happens more when my arm is tense or i snatch the throw. I obviously want them upright
@Straightdarts
@Straightdarts 6 ай бұрын
Your probably releasing late when that happens. Slow the draw back down and make sure you find the little pause after the draw back, elbow still and flick the wrist very early. Keep the throw and grip as soft, just flick. :)

Daniel, you described what I have been doing. I have pencil grip and no matter what shape the barrel is I always feel comfortable holding at the front. Almost the tip. Everyone tells me you should go back to center of balance point. After trying different weights and barrel types I end up back to the darts I started with. McCoy Stealths very tapered front. Seems I should have stayed with them all along. Lol Great video. Thank you
@neilrasmussen2063
@neilrasmussen2063 6 ай бұрын
Stealths 22g are what I keep going back to as well. What points do you have in them? The plastic tridents stop the huge lip causing bounce outs and mashing flights, but the aggressive points bury so deep in my blade 6 board the cones get ruined by the wires pretty fast. Bought some Mission Snipers but the cones were too small.
@j.d.1488
@j.d.1488 6 ай бұрын
@@neilrasmussen2063 Neil, I stayed with the standard black points that came with them. Those ribbed points destroy the board way to fast. I throw 23g myself. I used to use the Tridents but after a while I didn't bother. Many darters complained about Blade 6 bristle not as tight as the Blade 5, I have to agree. I found a new 5 and put my 6 to the side. Darts did fall out more often on 6. Blade 5 seemed to be a better board. When darts start to fall out I scuff with a small piece of emory( metal sand paper), I keep one dart case for when point shaft gets polished. Puts the grip back on helps a great deal to grip the bristles. Board technology so good now I see very little movable point players anymore. Mostly fixed. Any way sorry to ramble. Shoot well my man.

About Peter Wright (and myself for that matter): I think it’s not about not knowing what dart to use, it’s about keeping yourself motivated at the practice board. It’s much easier for me to put in the hours on the board, when you try something out once in a while, like a different point, stem, flight System or a slightly different barrel.

Made me laugh this video. Everything you said was true!! Was just about to purchase another set, ive gone from 21g to 28g to try and find my weight, and it looks like its a 23g maybe 24g, but prefer a more slender body. My son and I keep picking up sets getting good scores and then it fades away, pick up and other set and the vicious cycle begins... Wise words, think I'll just focus on what I have and sort the technique out first. I've subscribed as you talk sense.

1. Don't pick silly weights, stay between 20 and 26 grams approx. 2. Don't pick weird specialist shapes, stay with straight barrels, bombs, maybe one front loaded set or a torpedo. Preferably the grip should be consistent all over the barrel. 3. Have a small assortment of stem sizes (medium, inbetween, short) and flight shapes (standard, pear, kite) and experiment with those if you found a set that feels good. 4. Start tweaking from this point. Do I need more grip, less grip? Do I grip at the front, rear, middle? Just my opinion.

The most important thing that I picked up from the video was the timing of the throw. That is the thing that I keep changing subconsciously. It causes my darts to kick tail up horribly. It could be too much coffee before playing.😂

For a new player trying to achieve at least some consistancy: What do you recon are the most important things to get right and in what order should I try to improve them? Hi STTPD, Well even although iv'e been playing for a long time, I'm terrible for changing darts. I started my darts journey with 21g Red Dragon "Amberjacks". Straight barrel, knurled grip , 45.7mm in length. 20 years off the game, went back to this great sport & I'm changing as often as I change my sock 😩😩. So my original setup was the 21g Amberjacks, short stem & standard flight . Just wondering with the arm slowing over the years if going to 23g , short stem , standard flight might help ? Point me to one of your video's if I am asking a typical question. I have had 3 sets of darts for a long time (30+yrs) but I haven't throw regularly [I finally am trying to 😅 When I was young the 2 sets I started with are 22 (24 with med or long stems 45 and 50mm, reg flights). Then I got a 13.5 gr and Loved them. But I can't say I did that much better nor worse. I do have a fast flick of the wrist but I can easily be more relaxed and and throw the same. So I get from this video, I need to work more on the repetition of my technic. I should now mention I have bought 2 new sets. A 18gr med grip and a 20gr razor grip. As well as some 30 and 35 mm shafts. Long question short. Which weight and shaft should I start with and most importantly I guess, how many darts/day/months to really know if they are right. I literally today 1st throw of the day 180 wight the 20gr after a good 2 wks throwing the 18gr lol and the 2nd time I hit 180 since I started again, and with the same set🤔(Safe to assume 180 isn't a reg thing... yet😁) Lastly, is it more repetition per segment/# or good dart drills. For say weak areas on the board. Sure can hit bull consistently but double 1 and 8 kill me lol thanks for any help or points in the right direction so you are not repeating yourself ;)

Hi, I'd start with the 20g and 35mm shafts as that's more mainstream, most could get used to them. :) And this is a video on switching, always concentrate on alignment first and learn to flick straight, once this is advanced, practice the advice in this video to keep the throw the same on all targets :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7SDeMJqyta1XWw.htmlsi=ifEXMGB9UQtpISiB

What do you recommend for those who are just starting out or want to improve themselves? What should be the weight, what type of barrel should I choose and what kind of barrel balance should I choose? Can you give concrete examples of the sets currently sold?

I'd try to find somtbing around 48mm to 50mm long, 6.5 to 7mm wide and between 22g and 24g most. Winmue Navagators are a good option. :)

@@Straightdarts Hello, I just started Dart and I've been trying to play with my own efforts for about 4 months, I want to buy a good set and I like the MGV Exact and Aspire series. But I'm undecided about the weight, there are those who tell me to take a light 21g 22g. For those who say 23G would be more standard. What do you recommend the set 24G that I am currently using?

I used the same darts for about 32 years. Then I got a new set and used them for about 8 years then the pandemic happened and I did not throw for about a year. because the leagues were all shut down, wen I found an old dartboard that i had stashed in my basement and put it up on the wall. I found I could not throw either set of darts any more. The were just flying all wobbly and and kind of spiral like. and a lot tended to bounce off the other darts and flip sideways and bounce off the dartboard. So now in the last 3 years I have been searching for the rite dart for me. I now own about 25 sets of darts. And I have gone from shooting 23g-24g and have now tried everything from 22g up to 27g I find I have moved up in weight to my newest match darts at 27g. and I have a slower throw and trying to keep it as smooth as possible, and working on keeping a good follow through in my throw. I like you theory that as we age our joints and muscles slow down I have developed Arthritis in my wrist Thumb and fingers in my throwing hand so that could be contributing to the change in my throw from before the pandemic. I am not getting any younger I am 58 years young now, and been playing darts since I was 18, so 40 years now. You would think I should have this game figured out by now and be better at it by now? I am actually throwing some really bad darts lately, and find I have been in a slump the last 6 months or so. But getting so close to being there, with my game. I just need to fine tune something, not sure how to fix this, because I am missing my target by the width of the wire so much. Be it the 60 on all sides, wrong side of the wire. or on my doubles wrong side of the Wires Wires Wires and on all sides. So it is something really small that I am doing wrong and it is driving me crazy. I have been feeling Like I am very close to a brake through soon It a couple 180's the last few weeks so feeing good. This was a great Video. and very informative. Thank you so much for doing this one. And sorry for the long speech. CHEERS!! & SHOOT E'm STRAIT!!!

Whenever you keep hitting that wire, you're normally trying to hard. Forcus on your alignment, aim at the treble and accept the big number. Its easy to over aim in darts. :)

Hi, question from beginner, when you speak about darts weight to start with, you mean only barrel+tip weight or overall dart weight? Thx
@Straightdarts
@Straightdarts 3 ай бұрын
Yes, just the barrel and point is included in the weight. The point dosnt actually way much at all so it's just the barrel that matters :)

Good video Daniel. You're looking well. Couple of thoughts on this. Do you think physically weaker players (I.e females and teenage players) benefit from throwing heavier darts and tend to arc them more. With more weight, the dart does more of the work. If Fallon Sherrock tried throwing Steven Bunting's darts they probably wouldn't even reach the board. I do think darts manufacturers have reached the point of saturation and new product launches have become nothing more than indulgence. When I started playing 20 odd years ago you bought whatever was being sold in Argos or the local sports shop and never changed. In the modern day, it's so easy to buy darts online and there's more fascination thanks to KZfaq review videos and social media. Also, there's a lot more manufacturers than in the past as production costs are lower and direct distribution via the Internet is so much easier. There's something to be said for just buying a simple generic set: I.e. straight barrel, 23g, 90% tungsten and then getting used to them. Adapt your throw to the darts rather than finding the darts for your throw. Having said that, I'm a sucker for finding a bargain on amazon and like to add to my collection and change what I throw every few months!

I just started playing darts and my natural way that I grip the dart is at the front. The darts I have are even balance straight barrel. I noticed if I grip a bit more toward the centre I get a better throw. My Question is should I use a front weight dart since i naturally grip near the front or adjust to the centre weighted dart and learn to grip more in the middle. The one draw back of the centre grip for me is it is not quick and natural and probably not consistent even when playing quite a bit.

You can get a good idea from the shap, if it has more mass at the front like a Aspinall darts it will be front heavy, you can't be 100% a curtin though. KZfaq reviews can help.

I started playing again after a long hiatus, I got some 23g PETER WRIGHT SNAKEBITE PL15 MEDUSA sent to me (I did not order them but RD sent me them instead those I ordered). I feel like they are too light for me, I'm trying to keep my throw smooth but when I put in what I feel is "regular" power for me, the darts fly over the board. I feel like I'd do better with heavier darts and thinking of ordering some 26g or even 28g. I am also only on day 3 of throwing and my arm is dead... I feel like I've been lifting at the gym. I'm still doing a bit of throwing to try and get my arm used to it again. Also, I'm not sure whether I am concentrating too hard on my elbow/arm rather than the dart itself, when you throw do you feel like you are "pushing" the dart to the board?
@Straightdarts

Yeah, I just flick the wrist and have a slight push of the fingers. I don't use the arm in the throw at all :)

Í also cant find the right dart for me. I played with the brass bolt 22g Phil Taylor darts and i did improved with them. But they cheap as hell and dont last very long. Now i´m looking for a new set of darts with good quality, but i really struggle. I tried the Rob Cross Black Edition, Phil Taylor 9Five Gen 10´s and Nathan Aspinall Echo Darts. But they all feel weird for me and i think i need darts with long and thick barrel, bcs i hold the dart in a really weird way. Thinking about to try the Phil Taylor 8-Zero 2, but they only 80% tungsten.

I’ve just brought Ross smiths new darts and the barrel is slightly shorter then my current ones which are Chris Dobeys darts, when I’m throwing smiths the dart seems to wobble more in the air is that the case of putting a longer point in to counter the slight lost of length on the barrel? I use the same length stems for both darts

Practice flick straight, make sure your hand stays the same shape all the way, though. If your alignment is good this should bring achievable and will solve the problem in most cases. If it doesn't its likely due to uneven pressure on the grip. This means one finger is pressing to hard and is spinning the dart off. :)

Just curious, how often did Taylor switch darts? That clip of him shows him throwing very different shaped darts.
@Straightdarts
@Straightdarts 2 ай бұрын
He switched every few years but it was only small changes mainly. He has a straight barrel 22g in the early 90s, then straight barrel with more grip in the ealry 2000's and then 2009 was the biggest change, he was really struggling and stated using his wife's 26g John Lowe Style darts. They lead him to create the unicorn phase 5 in 26g. Every dart since has been very much the same. :)
