You’ll be called whatever the first grandkid decides to call you. Period. You don’t always get a choice. My two sisters and I all wanted to be Nana. The oldest one is Grammy, the middle one is Nee and I’m Granna. My granddaughters were 8 & 10 when they, and their dad, came into our lives. The first time I met them, the K year old says: So, what are we gonna call you? Me: How about Nana? K: Nah. I don’t like it. Me: Well then, come up with something else. K: Okay, I will. Fifteen minutes later she comes back. K: I’ve got it! Me: Lay it on me. K: We’re gonna call you Granna cause it’s part Grandma and part Nana so it’s better! And I’ve been Granna ever since. You can’t argue with 8-year old logic!. She’s now almost 18 and a senior in high school. Her sister is 19 and a freshman in college. All the grandkids who’ve come after have fallen in line and call me Granna.

The ending tugs at my heartstrings every time and never fails to make me tear up. When I was a kid, I had a hard time pronouncing the Y sound. My dad is Greek, and the Greek word for Grandmother is Yiayia. When I was learning how to pronounce Yiayia, it always came out as Lala. It just stuck, all these years later, even at my current age of 31. My Lala died in 2008 and I miss her so much. She was my best friend and the one person I could turn to for literally everything. From a casual conversation, to serious advice. My Lala was the one I always went to. As an adoptee, I am fortunate to have another set of grandparents. I call my other adoptive grandmother "Gramma", one biological grandmother "Nana", and the other biological grandmother "Yiayia" (Both my adoptive and biological fathers are Greek). But it will always be my Lala which makes this video tug at my heartstrings.

Well, they didn’t take no for an answer. My mom wanted Grammy (which is an awesome name that I want myself if my kids ever give me grandkids!) but my dad wanted to be Papaw!! Yeah no. Fortunately my son couldn’t/didn’t pronounce that so he was Papa. Perfect!

Here's something funny: me and all my cousins from my ma's side call our grandma "Maman". Strange thing is, not even grandma is sure where it came from. Maman, as far as I understand, is a french word corresponding to "Mommy/Mummy". I'm one youngest of all my cousins, plus the fact I was raused by grandma, so it would make sense fro me to call my grandma "Mummy", but the term "Maman" was apparently already in use since my oldest cousin. We have no french relations as far as i'm aware, we have no french ancestry, and we're nowhere near any french-speaking people. It's funnily weird.

In my family, we’ve had Grandma, Gigi (for a few grandmothers), Granny, one was called by her first name, and a couple came up with original grandmother names, which I won’t share for the sake of privacy. I’ve also heard Nana, Nanny, Mimi, Gumma, Grandi, MeeMaw, and the simple Grandmother. I love that there are so many grandparent names.

I became a grandfather at the relatively young age of 43. I had my daughter at 20 so it stood to reason. At first it was difficult for me to process but once I got past the initial shock I realized I had to come up with my Grandfather name. I settled on PopPop and it's served me well. My little one just turned 7 and I can't hold her anymore she's growing so fast. But I'm a cool grandpa. I play video games with her and am teaching her about the long forgotten era of rock music. She has an affinity for Led Zeppelin because of me and I'm not ashamed of that.

Growing up I was happy when I found some Nana cards, and the little times I found Mimi as I recall once or twice seeing it... As a child I recall getting such odd looks from friends and people when they heard me say these names. I mean it seriously felt like I was the only person sometimes who used these ones. lol ;)

@colorgaurdsweethreat34743 жыл бұрын
@@leepope3377 I get that. My family does the same. I will note before I continue with this thought that, I was and am the only daughter of my Mimi's youngest child and her only son, so my dad grew up with over ten years between him and his sisters, So when I say "cousins" they're technically my second cousins, since all the cousins I would have been in the same generation with were all adults some with children or graduating by the time I was born literally my technically oldest cousin was like a kid sister to my dad. Likewise I became the "baby" like my dad and kid sister to the generation I technically belong to. With that I'll go back to my train of thought... My "cousins" used to call her "Mimi" even their baby siblings still do occasionally. But as they grew being the second/third generation (?) they began being told to call her Grandma Eggie, after her middle name. While I being from the last of my generation, was praised and pushed to continue to call her what literally was what I called her without being asked to do so when I could make my first words or names for people. (I think I was told I'm the reasons people began calling her Mimi seeing how much she loved it when I was a literal tot who couldn't put together words and just used sounds). The reason, is I guess since my Mimi was an adult and even as a teen she utterly refused to go by her given name. Actually to this day just mentioning it repulses her, makes her groan and make these purposefully dramatic hacking sounds or cries. It's kinda hilarious. To me it's not that bad.. but lets just say the name is akin to Medusa, but also isn't. It's the visual reference I had as a kid when thinking of the name. I'm not saying the actual name but it's close enough. As a kid I easily saw why she hated the actual name she was given. But as I've grown I kinda like it to an extent it was unique and though sounds harsh has a nice ring to it. I think to honor her parents she never had the heart to legally change her given name, and by tehn everyone already called her by some nickname or her middle name, so she had no reason to honestly correct people on it. Although, then again I can't recall seeing her first name on her drivers license so maybe she did change it. Still, I love seeing her reactions to her name though I never dare call her by it. Just hearing her moan and groan randomly when she thinks or brings it up herself is severely cute and bemusing.
@colorgaurdsweethreat34743 жыл бұрын
@@cassgray9340 That's utterly cute. I have a neighbor up the street, who my family has been long time friends with, it's kinda ironic how when the fam moved we they happened to live far away each time. But she also goes by Kay, and her grandkids (who I grew up with) do the same. Although, I think they either say Granny K (for the younger grandkids), Grandma Kay or something different now. They may say something else, as I don't see or talk to the her grandkids as much as when we were children. But it's something I recall well. She kinda acts like a grandma or aunt to those kids she's watched grow up, super sweet lady. :) Also super thanks for the birthday wishes to Mimi. I'll try to remember to pass it on when I see her next. She loves hearing messages like this even if from total strangers. She's literally the type to make friends anywhere you go, my baby cousins entire basketball team and track literally made her their Cheerleader and the one the look forward to seeing every game. :) So she'd love to hear this too. Also before I forget, God Bless your family and Your Grandmas Nana And Grammy Kay. I wish them all a wonderful New Year, as well with you. Stay safe and healthy during this uncertain time. My grandmother went by Grandmother and refused to be called anything else as she saw it as a lack of respect. Lol So, we called her Grandmommy Dearest behind her back.

I call my grandmother PopPop because when I was three or so, she visited and had a bag that looked just like Mary Poppins', but I couldn't pronounce it. I continue to say it now because my aunt thinks it's immature and I love making people annoyed by my love

Oh Erin, it's not immature. I'm sure your PopPop Loves it! My Granddaughter called her only Great Grandma, Papa Barbie. None of us know why she chose to say Papa, but it stuck. Now, even tho she's passed on, we all call her Papa Barbie. 😍

As long as you and PopPop are good with it, doesn’t really matter what your aunt thinks!😜 I always worked hard at especially showing my love to a few family members who are like your aunt, so they see that I’m gonna love them no matter how negative they are… so you go!!!🙏❤️

I laughed so hard at this. My grandson had trouble with Nana so I was Nena for a long time. As I told my son, children will call people what they want, not necessarily what we want.

Honestly, in my family, we don't call my grandmother grandma, and he kind of nickname, she absolutely refuses to go by one since she doesn't want to admit she's old 😒
