Serj Tankian, born in Beirut in 1967, and Daron Malakian, born in Los Angeles in 1975 would end up forming a band together. Whilst they had both attended The Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School during their formative years, due to their age difference they didn’t meet until the early 90s, when they would become friends after realising they were working on separate musical projects in the same rehearsal studios.
Malakian on the other hand, was born in America. And whilst his parents emigrated to the US before he was born, he kept a firm grip on his Armenian roots due to his attendance at an Armenian school in the Los Angeles area.
Malakian was introduced to music from an early age and started collecting records when he was just 4 years old. And he once citied The Beatles and Slayer as being two of his favourite bands. With Reign In Blood being his favourite record.

Can you do a video about Warren Zevon? I’d love to hear your take on his music, the influence he’s had on the music industry and why he’s being denied entry to the rock and roll hall of fame. Not that that’s a bad thing it’s kind of a joke anyway

The record label did not disapprove of the title 'Suicide'. That's as made up as Serj having a classically trained voice. Daron confirmed it was their choice to change the title of the song to 'Chop-Suey' because the original title was just lazy and they didn't want to give the radio stations a reason not to play their new single.
@RAWMUSICTV
@RAWMUSICTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@trueform2348 Then Shavo and Daron have two very different versions of what happened with that title. Shavo has stated in numerous interviews, as recently as 2020, it was an issue with the record label. So if it's made up then it's made up by Shavo, I don't make things up, I take information from what an artist has said.

My grandmother watched her parents get slaughtered by the Turks when she was 4. Some lady took pity on her and saved her. She spoke to me in Armenian while I was growing up and I loved her very much. Her name was Bayzar Sarkissian and I get choked up when I think about what she had to endure as a child. We the people, should never again allow the atrocities that took place in the past to happen again. Thanks for the video.

My great grandparents escaped Armenia as well. Both my grandfather and grandmother were Armenian born here. But both sets of their parents watched and lost their parents. A horrible atrocity. Alot of Armenians still have hate and resentment for Turkish people. But all the Turks that did these atrocities are dead. I just wish they'd acknowledge what happened.

Back in middle school when I first started playing guitar a friend knew I was huge system fan and she got me the self titled record for my birthday, I took it home and learned the whole album front to back. I would spend hours rewinding the recorded to find the notes. Beautiful moments like that just make me thankful this band exist. Fun songs, great songs. I'm from Los Angeles as well. Cool to know they grew up not that far from where I grew up.

One thing ppl don’t realize about musicians is their heavily influenced by bands of completely different genres. Dave Grohl influence for Teen Spirit was the Gap Band. He gave the Westboro Church a free concert performing The BeeGees & today I heard him rapping to Juvenile. Musicians are quite talented & intelligent individuals that make the wrong choices in life. They shouldn’t be labeled by those choices but by their talent. We are all humans

I have my great grandparents that survived the genocide that never talked about it because they now that there children and grandchildren will never understand the trauma that they they experienced but I I did have an uncle who was very open talking about it. He lost his parents and was severely beaten in the camps that he was in. His story was the most incredible stories I ever heard and to listen to it made me cry for all armenians that ever experience this trauma! I love my armenian brothers and sisters. I also went and saw Tool about a month or so later at the same arena in philly. Saw them live in 2005. Mars Volta opened for them and once the opening band was finished there was almost a full hour before SOAD came on stage, during which the floor crowd just pressed harder and harder towards the front. But the second they started to play I got lifted off my feet and was in a literal human ocean. They didn't stop between songs, they didn't talk to they crowd, they just blew the fucking roof off the venue. After the show I was SOAKED head to toe in sweat, mine, other peoples'...... Its still, to this day, one of the greatest shows I've ever been to.... And I've seen my share.

The Pledge of Allegiance Tour is one of my all-time favorite lineups, and all of them in their early hungry days. We got there late, about two songs before "Dig", but it's one of the best concerts I've ever been to. My favorite SoaD show though was in SF at the Filmore. It was a guerilla tour they did, where they only released tickets a few days before the show, and you had to go buy the tickets in person, limit of 4. They play 1hr 45min straight, no opener, and out of three times I've seen them, the only time I got to hear "Spiders" live.

AC speed has the best microphone voice ive ever heard,dude i could listen to you talking about music and bands for hours and hours. You have something that loads of speakers could only wish for,good stuff. SOAD brings back a lot of memories for me,some good some bad.

System has always been one of my favourite bands and Daron is the main reason why I started experimenting with heavier guitar riffs, they’ve always had such a unique sound and an interesting career

I was fortunate enough to see them four times from 2000-2003. Still my favorite experiences from being a young man. These guys were more than a band to me, more, a statement of our collective frustration at the regime of the time. Their music is truly a spiritual experience.🤘

WOW, I Thank you for doing this video, I had NO idea about the members of SOAD all being Armenian & to see through this video, how 2 or 3of the members had grown up over seas, & how their families fled to the U.S.A. in order to find peace & safety, WAY to Go guys, You came, you conquered & made a name for yourself in the genre’s of Rock & Metal 🤘🏼😆🤘🏼🎸🎸🥁🎤

My initial comment was earlier in the video before I had even seen the rest of it. Holy shit you’re a beast. Fantastic content, uncanny and so educational 🙏 My obsession with system of a down started in sixth grade. I didn’t understand what it meant then. But in my formative years it shaped mentality. I am who I am because of SOAD!

Bro… 72k subs is soooo much less than you deserve. This is the video that got my sub a while back and here I am again. There’s a lot of rock Doc channels but I’ve yet to find one as deep diving and informative while also being such a digestible time frame as yours. Please keep doing what you do! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
