Among Richter's various live recordings:
Moscow (1948),
Warsaw (1954 and 1972),
Sofia (1958),
New York (1960),
Leipzig (1963), Aldeburgh (several years),
Salzburg (1977)
Amsterdam (1986)
Prague (several years)
His Prague recitals, published in 15 CDs by Praga, are unfortunately not available in streaming.
However, it is from these that some of the best piano performances of the 20th century are taken: Ravel's Mirrors, Beethoven's 29th sonata, but also these ballads.
This performance of Chopin's ballads was recorded on February 21, 1960, and is in my opinion the best ever.
Despite an imperfect sound recording and a somewhat noisy this is my favorite recordings for these ballades
This is obviously a personal opinion, but this recording is worth the detour anyway.

The only pianist I have heard who can make real sense of the coda of the 4th Ballade.

Be happy;) Try also Arrau with the nocturnes and the préludes. He´s the only one on Richter´s niveau.

Word! This is really increadilble amazing! Never heard the first ballad that logic and senseful. The opening section, the first main theme, colours, different perspectives...breathtaking. Apart to Arrau Richter is maybe the most fascinating Chopin interpreter.

Bravo pour ta vidéo ainsi que la présentation que tu en as faite :) En effet, je pense aussi que c'est la meilleure version des 4 ballades qui soit (avec celle de Zimerman). Mais ce qu'il fait dans la 4ème est tout simplement miraculeux, c'est le sommet de l'interprétation à mon avis. Merci!

Tu connais la version de Cortot de '29? Dommagement mauvaise qualitee, mais musicallement extraordinaire!

@@brickhead9779 J'aime beaucoup Cortot en général, mais pas sa version des 4 Ballades. Surtout dans la 4ème, dont je ne comprends absolument pas certains choix et l'interprétation dans sa globalité.

As Written in the description it was recorded on the 21st of February 1960. It was in Prague, don't really know about the venue but It was in the Rudolfinum I think
