I subscribed yesterday. Ive been bingeing your videos recently & find your channel actually useful. Very practical. I’ve had massive plant collections in the past, but I’m just back on the mainland from Hawaii, so I’m starting from scratch again. You have beautiful plants & many I’ve never had before. I’m in Florida, so my focus has always been tropicals & orchids. I’m in a tiny house now & I want to see how many plants I can grow in here. Really looking forward to a variety of plants 😊

Balcony: herbs. Drought tolerant. Good for bees and such. Smells great. Tasty. The more you harvest the more they branch out. :) Love your content, always cheers me up and gives me company whilst pottering about :)

I have had a balcony garden on a pretty small balcony. Get a wooden pallet, buy trough planters with hooks, tie your pallet to the side that gets the most sun and you get a wall garden with multiple levels and more privacy. I had also a trough planter on the floor of the balcony for cucumbers. I painted my pallet white so it looked pretty good. 🌱

Claire!!! I just got a sarawak last week because I covet yours so much, this makes me scream inside, you’re so brave!!! Mine lost its second, new leaf in the mail 😢 you’re not dramatic, I cherish mine so much too and aspire it to look like yours!

When I cut a leaf off of my aloe vera plant, I slice about half inch sections and freeze them. After I freeze them on a sheet pan, I put them into a lidded container and then I take one out at a time and slice off one side of the skin and then use it on my face, especially around my eyes and the cold and aloe nutrients really help tighten up my skin. Being frozen would also make these sections really nice for burns as well.

I love the Sarawak!! Definitely a wishlist plant. It kind of reminds me of pumpkins just looking at the shape lol maybe it’s just me. Hope it all works out for you though Claire!

Hi Claire! I had a very big aloe vera ( larger then yours) It was so big that I had yo do something about it, 2 years ago I did cut it and gave all the "leaves" to a soap maker. I have kept the top piece about 4 leaves I left it to dry out for over a week then put it back in soil and it is now as big as yours again. I have done the same thing with some leaves and they regrow, make sure they air dry first😊 Maybe it would be an option for you to keep it, just keep the head😉🌱

Sarawaks are thirsty af! Mine is watered every 5 to 7 days! They're turning yellow and falling off from underwatering most likely.

If you’re getting seeds or plants for a balcony or garden, please look for organic stuff. It makes such a big difference to the environment (think bees, butterflies, birds and moths not having to deal with pesticides) and in my experience these plants are much more sturdy and can handle a pest here and there more easily. So win-win 😊

ALSO, CLAIRE! YOU CAN BUY FROST-PROOF CLOTHS FOR SENSITIVE PLANTS! Or you can just use a black bin bag. It's honestly pretty simple to protect frost-tender plants in the winter months. Also, I think your Aloe will love it out there. My mom grew an Aloe outdoors last year, and even though it did go red at first as it adapted, it actually grew pretty well for her once it adapted (though, she did kill hers because she couldn't be bothered to protect it in winter.). But yeah, I think that's a good idea, personally.

I totally get feeling unsure and it's almost painful! I have a few rare Hoyas that have done nothing in years and I still can't bring myself to chop them 😫 Maybe if I see yours doing well in an update I'll go ahead and give them a chop!

I've had repeated success with soil propogogation of Aloe leaves. I usually do a mixture of cactus soil, orchid bark, perlite and sand. I then spray the soil liberally twice a week for about six weeks. I pull at the leaves and when then have a resistance I transfer them to a future home pot. So far it has worked (three plus years)

Hi Claire, in regards to the aloe, at least for protection against excessive rain outside, I have a couple of plants that have a little tent that I devised from a plastic box lid and 4 bamboo stakes. For the summer you can put a shade cloth on top as well. My winters are a little milder so I do keep some plants outside during winter but for uk you'd probably have to bring it inside at least at night the temps drop.

I too have this plant and it never bloomed but grew very large over about four years. Then it started dropping leafs. It did at one time have mealy bugs but I dealt with that. I moved the thing about three months ago into a better lit area and it hasn’t lost any leafs since. I have taken several cuttings that are doing well. Good luck with yours.

Defintely not too late for vegetables, pretty much perfect timing. I would recommend starting from seedlings if you want any tomatoes/chillies at this point of the year as you might not have enough time. I think for most other things about now (April) is the right time to start

use the aloevera leaves for hair and skin mask so chop chop-use and you can save space i am growing mine to grow big but i stays small

I put some of my largest succulents out on balcony in the summer months. Also if you want to make use of that space out there, I suggest Cordyline, Canary Island Palm, Mexican Fan Palm and Agaves. All grow well in UK climate, mine all survive through the years, but I bring the Agaves closer to wall so they dont get as wet in Winter months and cover with fleeces. I tried Aloe juice in a smoothie at one point but you have to make sure you only use the right bit thats edible!

Omg!!! The rug saga continues 🤣🤣🤣. The more time it spends outside, the more likely it will turn into a weed mat!!!! A new medium for growing plants 🤣🤣🤣. Maybe, the Hoya - Serawak, can join the rug in summer. Hoyas really love a lot of light. My Hoya - Carnosa & Crimson Queen have gone wild outdoors. Natural UV has great health benefits.

All of my Hoyas LOVE a nice ✂️ chop ✂️, I’m sure your Sarawak will do great!! If you enjoy a latifolia, you should look at the Latifolia “snow queen.” They have the same great big leaves as the Sarawak with stunning silvery variegation 🌱 🍴 🤩

Can I offer you some feed back on the fiddle Leaf fig?😊 I have one myself, and I had to cut the top twice because it was hitting the roof 😂 now it got two branches and I think i need to cut it this summer. So my experience with it is, give it LOTS OF LIGHT, put it by the window, it can handle some sun and leave it there :) and also, I never let mine dry out. I think it is actually a really thirsty plant. And it loves getting feed. It stops growing if its not getting as much light as it want 😊 I live in the south of Norway, so I need to let it stay by a window all year. And actually, when I pot mine up, I gave it a much bigger pot, and the growth was big lush and it grew much faster. And I also noticed that it was growing a lot longer before it stopped before winter. So give it light, water, feed, and space. My soil is a mixture of perlite, vermiculite, orchid bark and soil. So I give it drainage, but not letting the soil dry out :) love your content ❤

My 2 leaf Sarawak has grown 1 leaf in my care, in 8 months, I’m hoping it’ll root enough to give me some growth this year ❤ that fiddle leaf needs a chop too! That size of bag of tree fern fibre is going for 70$ CAD on Amazon rn, I really want to try it but just can’t spend that much. Yes you can ingest Aloe, they have an aloe drink here in Canada available I look at my Aloe, thin leaves but 2 foot across, she needs more light for sure, then I look at the Aloe Vera in Hawaii the leaves are 1-2 foot across, the plant 4-5 feet wide, and it makes me sad for it a bit

You will be green with envy at her gorgeous plants, but she's extremely helpful about propagation/care. Warm climate to start with so not the same as your conditions. But lovely plants...thanks as always for your videos😊

Not growing on a balcony, but still in pots so very similar and I'm currently raising a bunch of veggies (jalapenos, chilli, Bell peppers, Tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles and some herbs) from seed and I've quickly realized that one seed packet contains a lot of seeds xD but yeah I'll try to get all of them to fruit! And my various colors of raspberrys are about to explode with growth ^^ if you have the space/ can have something spiky/ can loot after the tendrils (Do you call it that for stuff like raspberry, idk) that will otherwise grow wild I'd highly recommend yellow raspberrys, they are so sweet. And they spread quickly. I planted mine last year as a single stick (got it for 2€ at Aldi) and it's already pushing out four new shoots from the ground! I also recommend checking the special offers in grocery stores etc. I recently got some fruit trees for 5 bucks each (at ~1,6m tall) and they are decent quality. That was an easy and cheap way to get something native which is also beneficial for all the insects here. Alternatively I'd always encourage anyone to fill their outdoor space with native flowers and plants! The difference between non native and native plants is gigantic when it comes to benefitting native insects. And native plants are usually easy to care for since they already grow outside in your climate! Our small garden is usually filled with bumblebees, butterflies, little mice, a hedgehog in fall and a squirrel. And I attribute a lot of those visitors to the native plants I planted. We even had two butterflies hibernate in our garage this winter ^^

Have you tried giving you hoyas more water if they are not doing well? Especially if new leaves struggle and so on. I've put some of mine in self watering (in aroid mix 😮) and they are doing better! They survived perfectely in drier conditions, but didn't grow.

With the first hoya, I think the problem might be , because the leaves are so beefy, the existing root ball is struggling to support the plant, since you are growing it upwards it doesnt get the chance to continue rooting in through out the stem, and existing root system its just not enough to support new leaves.

Hi Claire, I'd greatly appreciate a video on caring for Peperomia Hope. While it's a beloved part of my plant collection, it's the one I struggle with. Despite lots of new growth, the leaves are smaller, thin, less succulent, and oddly curled. I'm considering chopping it back ... but I'm hesitant because of past failed propagation attempts. I have an alocasia ninja. They are more velvety than the black velvet and so much easier to grow

I have a sarawak cutting. And it's REALLY testing my patience. I've had it for a year. And it's rooted well. But It's giving me 0 new growth. I hope this summer will be his starter.

You had trouble with your Sarawak not growing. I gave some time for mine to acclimate to my home after it arrived. Before I knew it, two new stems emerged from the soil. Each stem has multiple leaves, the main stem has not grown. I’ve only had it 3-4 months. I was not expecting that. I’m pondering what to do now myself. They are weird plants.

I received a single leaf with node cutting and it rooted fast and I've had it for 6 months and haven't had any growth. I'm wondering when it will give me something

You have to prepare aloe vera properly to use it. It's not a hard process. I was taught by a Mexican friend teach me
