To our newcomers, welcome, to the old crew, welcome back. Apologies, this review was delayed by eight months, and in the intervening time we have experienced more audio equipment than we can count, so a shootout will be coming against some of the others later on .

By the way, I have ordered the Hugo TT2 as a DAC and headphone amp. I will give my take on it here when I get the unit and has started listening tests on it. It will be paired with a Hegel H390 amplifier and Dynaudio Evoke 50 speakers with dual Rel T9i subwoofers.
@oysteinsoreide4323

I have gotten it now and my first impression is as follows: It totally blows the H390 internal DAC and the Denafrips Ares II DAC. I have demoed the Qutest a while ago, but it is too long ago to give a good impression on the differences. But as far as I recall, the space and also the weightyness in the bass, and instrument separation is far better with the Hugo TT2. I use the DAC in amp mode on low gain instead of using it in DAC mode. I tried it first in DAC mode, but the sound was a bit constrained. Maybe it is because of the voltage is a bit on the high side out of the XLR outputs. ( 5 Volts or similar ). For me it works better in amp mode. As a headphone amp I have barely tried it just to see that it works. I have not done extensive testing with it that way. But it is because I primarily use it as a DAC for feeding an amplifier and speakers.

Agree about M-Scaler... it's something where when you flip back and forth you immediately realize the difference. Much wider, more open, more precise sound with m-scaler.. like you say, instruments just "appear" out of nowhere, precisely positioned. I'm flipping back and forth between this stack and a Holo May KTE and it's hard to say one is better than the other.. more just different. One more articulate and precise (TT+M), one more warm and natural and "musical" (May).

After even more playback, my lasting impression is that is is a very good product, also as a preamp/DAC combo. Maybe the amplifier / speaker has something to do with the impression that the test here showed? It works well with most kinds of music. The biggest impact for me is for orchestral music with busy tracks. The separation and clarity is in another world of what I have heard before.

Hola from sunny Malaga. Brillant channel! Don't know if you´ll catch this though but I gotta try... You are probably the only one audiophile youtuber so knowledgeable and experienced I can actually ask and hope for an answer. So i have the mojo 2 with a focal clear, and the kef ls50 wireless 2 + kc62 sub, great apartment system and neighbors friendly :) I have to say I am really happy with all this gear. I actually found out that if I plug in my mojo 2 into my desktop computer via usb-c and then in the other end into my ls50 wireless 2 via mini jack 3,5 mm, I get the kefs to sound better, not by much but still I appreciate the upgrade. So of course now I am looking at the superior bad boy from Chord to get even more out of my kef if possible, as well as it would also upgrade my sound on the focal clear I guess and also possible futur high end headphones I might buy later. To be honest I never use the mojo 2 on the go, almost only desktop setup as I described which brings me to think, if I want to upgrade, no need to pay for a device with battery like the hugo 2, I might as well look at the next level with the TT2 desktop device. So simple question : How much better could the sound be with same use (plugged into ls50 w2 and with focal clear) from the mojo 2? And how should I connect the TT2 to the ls50 w2? is the mini jack 3,5 mm my only option or is there a better one? (the ls50 w2 have earc, coax, toslink optical and the aux I am already using with the mojo 2. Thank you very much and please keep doing what you are doing, much admiration ;)

Exponentially better for headphones without a doubt Completely different experience, I love the TT2 still and it will definitely drive 80% of headphones perfectly until you get to the very very hard category of susvara But that’s a different story, in regards to the speakers, I thought the LS 50 had DSP correction and not passed through straight through analog, but if I’m mistaken, and it does exponentially better To answer your question, yes and an exponential upgrade night and day

Hi, also have the Ferrum OOR and HYPSOS and love it with the TT2. I found the hard way that the RCA output in the back is the best sound connected to a external amp as the OOR. And also from the back outputs for top performance you i must have just one output connected , like RCA or the XLR ( just use one ) . As the my understanding and after exchanging some msgs with Chord and Rob himself , the both outputs share the same single ended output, with different gains . The reason i say the hard way is because of wanted use both at the same time, as in DAC mode, to connect two external amps . TT2 - OOR from the XLR and TT2 - Feliks audio echo 2 from RCA, it´s a no go . Still if you have one amp off and Just one of them on ,the sound is bad . Only plug one in the back at the same time , if the two are essencial , use amp mode with -15L in volume , but still the sound is not great as in dac mode with just one output being used. Hope this help someone !

I’ve got the same system as yours which is OOr +Hypsos for headphone amp and Ultima 5 for loud speakers. I did connect them both at the same time but use one at a time (switch off or unplug power when using another). And I’m always using the amp mode ( controlling volume from TT2 instead) because Ultima5 is the power amp which is no volume knob. In the case, I have to bypass signal at OOr as well to use preamp from source (TT2). The results is acceptable but it’s a bit complicated and might take risk if I change to DAC mode to supply both amp. So I think this is the way to connect both amps at the same time. (All is Hi gain mode from TT2)

@@jacksatin2011 for the two amps I have , it does not work … I have tried that , the RCA (tube amp) seems ok, but then I turn power off the tube amp and turn on the OOR (XLR) and the sound from the OOR is distorted weak and is clipping with cuts in the sound . Maybe because the XLR uses more gain… I have found a solution, just plug the RCA in the TT2 - Switch box and from there divide to the OOR and Feliks echo 2, it works !! It seems the quality is the same as connect directly. Like this i can also have the two powered on at the same time!

I think you need to wait 15 seconds switching between headphone mode and pre-amp/dac mode (via unplugging a headphone) because you set the gain differently in these two modes. I had the same issue at first when I set high gain for pre-amp/dac mode and low gain for headphone mode. But then after a while I set the headphone to high gain as well. And the problem goes away. No more waiting, not a second in switching headphones.

From what I've heard in reviews, I wonder why everyone who is considering something like the TT2 plus some top at the line headphones, which will together cost >8k new, does not simply consider the Warwick Bravura system. Can TT2 (without M scaler) with the right headphones be better than the Bravura system? It's also very compact, just like the TT2. So these could be seen as two direct competitors.

What you’ve got to consider bud is that this is a very old review. The market has shifted and changed a lot, and I think a lot of people sometimes just fancy the variety and variations of the hobby rather than having one system and just walking away, I’m actually doing a re review of the Brav right now, I have both the black one and the gold Aperio on the desk, it’s very difficult to beat it for performance at the price point it comes in even today. Because I don’t believe I did med gain is already limited for SUS, sometimes you can max it out almost, depending on the track,

@@ConvinceMeAudio turn the switch to use it as power amp, no I didn’t. In amp mode I think it colored a bit the sound , prefer in dac mode. As after testing more yesterday , I think a prefer mid gain on the oor with the VC . On high gain vocals became to much in your face …

@@ConvinceMeAudio as I have read I think the TT2 with Mscaler have a attenuation of 3db in Dac mode. Maybe this is the difference i ear.. just the TT2 dac mode on the oor with the Zmf VC I must use 12 o’clock. Mscaler in the chain I have to use 2 o’clock, some songs 3 o’clock.

Are there any dacs in the $1000 to $1500 that will pair against the chord tt2 dac. I plan to pair it with the voyager amp. General is fine too.

It’s not too bad, especially if you use the warm filter But the best synergy I have found has been with the oor when it comes to the LCD5, it’s magic

@@ConvinceMeAudio ok, i have the Oor/Hypsos set and i have the Anni,Qutest, Mscaler set. I much prefer the Chord 3some over Ferrum which to me is lacking punch,so how does Tt2 fit into my ear preference?

@@annarobertson8320 okay this is intriguing, I presume you used your cutest as the DAC for the OOR as well? The benefits of the TT2 over cutest is quite large, it’s in a different league when it comes to the DAC quality I always found cutest, rather polite, and throwing Dave on the OOR was absolute magic By utilising the chord stack, and then taking the TT2 out into the OOR, you might gain a little more attack and punch over cutest through that amplifier Creating a scenario where you might have the best of both worlds until later on if you ever decide to get a Dave or a may Out of curiosity, have you considered MAY instead of the TT2?

@@annarobertson8320 incidentally, IDSD pro signature is one of the hardest hitting DAC amplifier combo for the LCD5. I have ever heard, I am just not too fond of the tuneing. It’s a little too sharp. That’s fair enough, TT2 will be fine Dave will be best

I also agree with you regarding Sus + TT - I *wish* it was powerful enough, but it's just not. Sounds closed and thin on bass. Too bad. Did you try powering Susvara from the rear dual XLR's? I've heard that can help but don't have the right adapters to make it work, so I've only used SE.

I own lot of gear including the TT2+Mscaler and ZMF VC and this is not the best setup, not even by a long shot. My Susvara with a Holo May Kisume (L3) plus my Woo WA33 Elite edition with KR tunes is by far a better experience. It is holographic, better bass response, more textured and better detail. The VC and TT2 sound fair by comparison.

This is a very very old video mate, before all of the insanity that arrived at the channel. Now my upgraded system leaves this Back in the dust, yet the synergy still is amazing Currently, I’m running May kte serene kte mono block benchmark ahb2 and Susvara set up, what I think at the time of this video was recorded. This was the highest and system I had put together around $13,000. It’s insane where we have got to feels more like a starter kit these days LOL

The m scaler is a sign the product wasn’t optimised. Why wasn’t it included inside the DAC?? I know a few people who don’t like the Chord sound. Afraid China make the best DACs.

That would make the product’s barrier to entry extremely high. Better to split the units in terms of approachability and those who wish to upgrade with the mscaler can. Also, one million taps from the mscaler would also take a lot of computing power and thus increase form factor, taking a bit away from what makes the TT2 an attractive buy in the first place.
