Mind blown! I always thought it was some crazy modes or something but now I see it's just chord tones with enclosures and other chromatic leading tones basically.. that so simplifies it! Thanks :)

Jonny... thank you so much for this lesson. You switched on a light for me. I have been trying, in my beginners way, to solo over chords; wondering why some of the notes were good and added to the tune, and some were bad and really spoiled it. As you were explaining it I was thinking "How obvious! Why did I not realise this for myself?" You are a great and gifted teacher, you love your craft and want to pass on not only the skills but the love of music as well. This was a landmark lesson for me. Thank you.

Yet another Wow! This makes immediate sense. Of course! So simple and logical. Now all (!!!) I have to do is to learn all the enclosures for all the notes in every chord in a progression. (That was self-directed irony toward me, not sarcasm toward you.) The trick here is to 'not' learn mistakes. Take it slow, learn it thoroughly then see how the enclosure tones can be used as lead tones to the next chord. Pure gold Jonny. Thank you.

GREAT exercise Jonny! Even though I've been aware of enclosures and use them, your exercise helped to make them more usable in my playing. I did the exercise with every major chord going up in 4ths and I must say doing the key of Eb for some reason really caused something to click for me. Also I started hearing in my head that the line could work with C Eb dim I Dm7 to G7 ( 2 beats apiece.) Kind of cool.

I forgot about using rootless chords really cool. Almost forgot that with Jazz you can really play around going out of key with grace notes and transition really nice. Thanks man cool video. 👍🏼

Probably nothing... I notice in this example, and I realize it is merely a touch of the surface of what can be done, when descending by 1/2 step you suggest an upper enclosure and when descending a full step and under enclosure. Basic road map I'm guessing. I saw another tutorial that suggest, as a means of getting started, to use a simple upper or lower enclosure when moving chord tone to chord tone but a "double" when moving from a non-chord tone to a chord tone. At first it can be confusing and rather fussy sounding, but it is great for the brain.

Playing jazz has very little to do with playing scales sequentially. In fact, playing scales sequentially is pretty much anti-jazz and will never give you jazz. You must have approach notes, enclosures, chromatics and arpeggios.

Jonny, I notice in some of your videos that while sustaining a single note, you wiggle the pad of that finger left and right on the key. Newbie question here; what is the purpose of the wiggle? I can't find it referenced online.

Since he hasn't responded to you, there are two possibilities that occur to me: 1.) He's wiggling to draw attention to the pertinent notes at whatever point in the tutorial... or 2.) He's searching for/locating that point by which the hand is supported and balanced by the finger on whatever key said finger happens to be, ala the "arm-weight method." www.people.vcu.edu/~bhammel/chen/arm_weight_method.htm I guess we won't know for sure until Johnny responds to this particular comment thread, but at least you've got a response with a potential trail to explore ;-)
