This was great for clarification on the symbol to chord correlation. I knew the chords themselves, but after a few years off the symbols escaped me. Especially true with chords with more than one alternate symbol.

Thank you Jamie! I'm going to re-watch this, making notes, then go and try it out on the piano and violin (I don't even play saxophone but I love watching your videos with my husband, who does), and buy you a coffee :D And thanks for the tip about thirds in "how to play in tune", works great on the violin too!

@@GetYourSaxTogether Hey Jamie, I've listened to your opinion about how ligatures don't contribute much to your sound and I've listened to others who bang on about how they do. I managed to play quite well using a rubber band! Great time too. I'd show you a picture but I can't seem to upload it here. Jay.

@@GetYourSaxTogether True, never though of it that way - I guess because diminished scale has eight notes.

Really clear explanation Jamie. Thank you for doing this. What's the best way to remember all this for saxophone? Would it be by arpegiating the chord notes as part of daily practice until it sticks or is there a better way?

Thank you for explanation. Because I almost don't know music theory, I would like to ask, how we can use it by play on sax? Should we play (or prefer) notes of the chords in improvisation? Should we play them in the order as background? Thanks for the answer. You do good job Jamie!
@GetYourSaxTogether
@GetYourSaxTogether 3 жыл бұрын
Yeh, basing your solos around "chord tomes" is a great way to outline the harmony and sound good. You can link it all up with enclosures and bits of scales.

Thanks for this rundown of chords. Getting them into my head and fingers when reading a chart takes time and lots of practice (especially when I am trying to read charts for alto, as I usually think in concert pitch.) Then getting familiar enough with the chords to be able play coherently, melodically and expressively is the next step. One question: does a 9th, 11th, 13th always imply that the 7th (major/minor) is included in the chord?
@GetYourSaxTogether
@GetYourSaxTogether 3 жыл бұрын
yeh, most times a 9th, 11th and 13th will have the 7th, but the flattened 7th. 9-11-13 chords are dominant 7 chords unless otherwise stated. Exceptions: a "6/9" chord, a "#11" chord could also be a major 7#11.

Question: as a saxophonist faced with a lead sheet (full of chords) what do you play? Or doesn't it matter as long as it's in the chord???
