Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Intervals. Aaron Marshall's instrumental group Intervals has been on my radar and mixed into my listening habits for the last eight years, and while I've spent a significant amount of time listening to his inspired music, but the material/ideas shared in this lesson was the first time I've actually physically learned/performed some of this music - which has been a blast and a major challenge!
Intervals are a great band for any fan of instrumental rock/hard rock guitar music. Their music is always melodic, driving, modern, and interesting. Aaron has constantly created and delivered a diverse selection of music covering four studio albums and two EP's (so far). This includes his latest album 'Circadian' which was released last year. The ideas/examples found in this lesson include some great chord-based ideas from songs such as 'Slight Of Hand,' 'Touch And Go,' Momento,' and several others, including a special look at the opening of the song 'Lock & Key' from Intervals new album - which is a real finger-twister!
If you're already a fan of this group then you already know what to expect in this chord-based lesson - interesting and lush chord voicings and progressions, dreamy chords with ringing open strings, aggressive chord riffs/rhythms, and much more. But for those that are new to Intervals and Aaron Marshall's fretboard talent, there's plenty to sink your teeth into in this lesson. As a bonus, you'll discover a ton of new music to listen to and explore after working through this lesson.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Hey Dave, this is definitely the type of guitar playing that interests me very diverse. It seems players like this never really get the recognition they deserve in my opinion. To me what you showed us was really kool. I enjoyed this LNL. ROCK ON DAVE! 👊 🎸

I paused this lesson in the first two minutes so I could listen to a few tracks from some of their albums. Holy Schneikies, they are really locked in! Soooo tight and solid. Yes, Aaron Marshall is definitely a monster, but, whoa, the rest of the band is amazing too. Thanks for introducing them to us (“us” being your fans who hadn’t heard of Intervals...hard to say their name without immediately adding “...the band, not the distance between notes,” but I’ll get used to it).

Saw them open for BTBAM back in 2011, and been a huge fan ever since. I've seen them probably 6 times at this point. Always a top notch show. Aaron is not only a monster guitarist, but also a really nice dude. Met him numerous times over the years and is always approachable. Even tho they're known for instrumentals, my personal favorite album is A Voice Within, their only album with vocals (by the amazing Mike Semesky).

How you doing David? Thanks for turning me on to a new (old) band. I know we would've got along good if we were friends. I used to find bands with an old friend and buy album's, it was a gas. Anyway, you've really made a great show for yourself and really captures peoples music interests.Peace out.

Dave thanks for the turn on. I’ll definitely be checking them out. A lot of the examples you played reminded me of Umphrey’s McGee, a basically Indiana band, from South Bend. I was a huge fan of their Anchor Drops and Strength In Numbers CD’s. Their guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Baylis are very good especially Jake. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. If not you should check them out.

This is gold! It will be so cool, if you'll do that for bands like periphery, monuments, erra, issue, like a modern metal approach for guitar! They really have huge and beautiful chords, and chord progressions!

I'd not heard of Intervals before but I'm hooked! Love those chords and note patterns. How about some more John Sykes too but from the Blue Murder album. Some tasty chords and licks on there. (Billy is one of my faves).

Thanks man! I'm still toying with the idea of changing the bridge pickup, but who knows - I might keep it as is. I dig the neck pickup, it's funky, but I can't help but wonder what would happen if I put something funky in the bridge position too, but that might be too much funk. So for now, I'm going to keep it as is. It's rockin' my socks! : )

I guess when you reach the level of proficiency on the guitar (and music) that you have achieved, - apparently you can put whatever pick guard you like on your guitar. I guess I'm just going to have to understand and accept it. As you will also understand and accept that there is a high probability that you and I will never be photographed in public together. Nothing personal, David. lol!... Just teasing... Love your stuff. All the best.
