Raising capability via physiology to achieve Csíkszentmihályi's flow. Mind blown by this woman - every profession needs a Taubman. Can you believe a doctor wanted to break all the bones of that one pianist? Did Mrs. Taubman ever receive an honorary Doctorate? If not, why not?

Inspiring! She makes the technical problems that we all wrestle with suddenly seem surmountable able after all! Her advice is so logical and she has that rare gift of being able to communicate it so lucidly.

Many pianists or pedagogists tend towards the idiosyncratic, the metaphorical, the subjective and the romantic in their discussion of technique: "Let the sound come up out of your hand," "the tip of the finger will create a harsh, ugly tone." Nonsense. Taubman is refreshingly different. Her thinking is clear-headed, scientific, analytic, critical and mechanically reductionist which is exactly what you need to master the fundamentals of difficult piano repertoire and avoid injury.
@DavidSzabo88
@DavidSzabo88 2 жыл бұрын
The scientific/analytic point of view is not better, just different. Anyway, the music and the connection between the musician and the music/audience matters, not the technique, it's just a tool.

@@DavidSzabo88 Debussy said the emotions must come first and I love his music. So I'm not against the emotive, intuitive or expressive. But I once had a university piano prof tell me "let the sound come up out of your hand". I'm sorry, that is nothing I can use let alone make sense of. By comparison, I recall a workshop where a piano teacher explained the concept of 'thumb ghosting' i.e., touching but not actually striking the thumb in a scale exercise. It's a great way to learn to hold back on the powerful thumb and get it to blend in more smoothly with the other fingers. Do you see the difference? Thumb ghosting has enabled me to smooth out my scales and runs immensely. It was something concrete, practical, analytical, logical and useful. Beautiful, expressive piano playing is the end goal but if the underlying mechanics are flawed it's almost impossible to achieve.

@DavidSzabo88 2 жыл бұрын
I guess it's about when you're playing sequences - neither octaves, nor intervals - with your 4th finger on black keys. Basically it's not forbidden but it creates a kind of a sequenced movement which you want to solve with twisting your wrist. It's ok if you can make it without twisting.

Only two images : 1) this Robert Shannon guy saying that the lady made a miracle in 10 minutes. “I ‘ll cure you in ten minutes” This reminds me the “exorcism” exercises we see in those churches where you have to pay under cover of “collaborate” 2) All the situations with the old lady saying almost ridiculous things to the students about the use of the fingers or the arm. The old story of people that develop a good business around an artistic discipline and it’s difficulties. There are not many videos of the lady playing using the “technique” herself are they?
@DavidSzabo88

@@DavidSzabo88 I love piano technique, and I do understand it. I can also see that this nice old lady made a big business around her technique and her approach to piano playing and teaching. I do not say that she was a lier because it is obvious that she believed her own words. But when you see a guy saying “in ten minutes all my problems were solved” …. Why was not this magical piano and therapist advisor working all around the world “healing” everyone? Piano Jesus !

@@maomozart Devil in the details man, I didn't say that you don't understand piano technique, I've just sad you don't WANT to understand her - it's a huge difference. Anyway, it's your right not to believe the "ten minute" thing, it maybe was a day, or 10 days, whatever, it doesn't make any difference. And if you're such and expert of techniques, you understand that there are no universal things at all. It worked, is still working for me and yeah, it was not ten minutes but years, but it's not for anybody. And it's pity we're still talking about techniques, not the music at all.
