Chris Boardman became the picture of British cycling in 1992, when he won the country’s first olympic cycling medal in 72 years.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Decades later, while his face is still synonymous with British bicycles, these days it’s because he’s on crusade to make them safe and accessible for all.
As Policy Advisor to British Cycling, Greater Manchester’s Cycling and Walking Commissioner and the chairman of his own bicycle brand, Chris Boardman has dedicated his life to changing the way we view bikes.
This week, Chris Boardman speaks to Krishnan about giving up his car, pushing through the barriers of change and why Covid-19 may be the catalyst for reshaping Britain’s cycling identity.

I've either had no car or used one minimally for 45 years. Results: - Saved gobs of money, as Chris said - Helped me stay healthy and fit - Great times with friends and family I recommend starting slow ... doing the easy trips by back. Watch out though, it's addictive.

A great idea to provide a safe space for cyclists. Those who wish to cycle can cycle without worrying that they might get hit. Those who, for whatever reason, need to drive, can do so without worrying about a cyclist in their lane. It's a win-win.

And, similarly to what Chris said in this interview, punishing drivers (who are only making those short journeys) by giving cyclists priority in places, means that they will be encouraged out of their car and onto bikes, because they realise they could have made the journey quicker by bike than they would by driving.

Great to see such an intelligent, articulate and modest gent laying out such a compelling vision for how to improve not only transportation but our communities. Hopefully the policy makers were listening. Thank you Mr Boardman and Channel 4.

driving is not sustainable in london there is something like 2.6 million cars in london with a road system which dates back 100s of years. saying that see how many people are up for cycling when it is raining and minus 10c plus wind chill

Thanks for this, really good interview. On a personal front, I am car owner and a cyclist. But as a family we only own 1 car, we ditched the other car around 11 years ago. Even when my son was born we didn't need another car, having a child is often an excuse I've heard for buying another car. My son has grown up with bicycles, he's 9 now and we ride on the road together (most of the time). He loves cycling, he hates riding on shared parths prefers the road, he finds the shared paths too many hazards like having to stop at every junction to cross over.

Great point made just after the 5th minute where Chris explains how, in his lifetime kids have been moved away from the streets to their bedrooms due to safety issues. We still can't get our heads around the fact that driving non-essential journeys is selfish and adds to the feelings of danger for whole communities.

I’ve heard that you can now buy cars fuelled by electric, but I’ll believe it when I see it . Where are these cycles made and what are they made of , non recyclable carbon and petrochemicals , made in Chinese coal fuelled factories and shipped around the world in diesel powered cargo ships and then discarded to landfill when the weather gets cold and wet and windy or you get fed up with flat tyres and oily hands .

i work in construction, usually in remote areas, changing sites , the minimum drive i have had is for 1 hour one way, plus at least 10 hours physical work, now thats over 40% of the job market, for a middle aged rich man to conquer the roads at 11 am looking for a fight on the road with a working person ,is delusional to say the least, if have the energy to cycle for an hour or 2 a day given the stamina of 40-50 male or female = you are not working ,you have the time money and privilege to do so, throughout my career i have had 1 engineer that cycled to work everyday for 2 months until he gave up because he arrived tired for the start a long shift already sweating, yours... a man on the road for 14 hours a day.

Make NO-CAR-STREETS in neighbourhoods. In Europe there are streets for people and for children to play freely, this will help the cyclists too. Or make a lot of cul de sacs that let cyclist pass through at the end. This should solve the 'no space for cyclists routes problem' to a certain extend.

Boardman is an absolute joke. I don't know a single person who cycles that doesn't have injuries or wear and tear and most are gradually quitting because of its not practical or safe a d is affecting their jobs . I was almost killed when hit by two vehicles in 1 accident and have life long injuries as a result and sciatica and only got £2500 compensation after 4 year battle because the first guy that hit me lied! A guy I used to work with was almost killed also and has been left paralysed. I know several who fell off in winter resulting in broken wrists and fingers. Lots that have back and neck problems, hip pain etc. I don't know a single person that works closer than a 20 minute drive to work and mine is 45 minutes that I consider to be local because I used to work all over the country. Most companies dont have showers or drying facilities for saturated clothing from rain or safe places to keep several thousands of on pounds in bikes. He's completely brain-dead. Oh and another thing bikes are obscenely expensive to buy and maintain.
