I was blown away by all the production tricks and tweaks that you pointed out; some of them, like you say, are really quite brilliant, and show how many of our most iconic and well-loved music and musicians may not be technically perfect, but perfectly THEMSELVES. The late Chris Cornell is still, in my opinion, one of the most naturally gifted modern-day vocalists, with a very unique voice...which the production team enhanced to perfection! I've watched hundreds upon hundreds of hours of production videos throughout the years, and I feel necessary to say that your approach should be the golden standard in these sorts of educational videos. You don't only analyze the performance itself (which is the backbone of the finished product), but go balls-deep, as in showing the exact parameters/settings with the exact plugins to get as close as possible results to the original. I'm currently aiming for that crisp Superunknown-vocal mix, and this video helped me a ton.

Chris, It's amazing what these tracks can instill in our own voices, that filter into other songs. I happen to really like his pop recordings he made like "Long gone" when Timbaland was trying to get him to reach a wider mainstream audience.

it is crazy that I am in a deep Chris Cornell hole looking at his Poncier EP, his covers, live stuff and all the stuff that he was doing when he was just starting out and how that set the stage for his solo career and all the things that he did later on and you release this! Thank you!! You have won me over, you will soon be taking my money. Lol. something that I caught from one of his interviews that he said when it came to being able to belt out the high notes that he was during his first albums in particular in the way he would sing in those albums he said that he found the way to squeeze and he realized that he could keep squeezing and squeezing and the no got higher and higher.

This was recorded in the 90s in the analog domain to 2 inch tape. I don't think there was any outboard de-essers at that time period, could be wrong though. A tip is to eq the signal sent to the reverb, high-pass filter to a 12/18 dB per octave slope and cut everything below 600Hz and then set the low-pass filter with the same slope and cut everything above 10kHz. This will help with clarity and noise of the reverb. I suspect something similar was done on Black Hole Sun.

One important lesson from this video: it's crazy how much double tracking makes the difference between "some guy singing nice" and "wow, sounds like the original". I though I knew this but I discovered just how much closer the sound gets when trying to record the chorus to Would? recently. Brilliant idea to demonstrate this here.

This is so good, Chris! I have so much I want to say, but I'll start with a simple thank you My path took me to audio engineering, and I'll say the sounds between the singing, are very familiar to me. One thing you can hear is the echo of the sound of the engineer physically punching in (hitting "record" as the song is playing, to get a precise entry point). A lot of engineers at that point, still chose to punch in manually (it's not inconceivable that Chris could even punch himself in), and what we hear, is literally the echo in the room, of the clicking of the button that punched them in. Same thing with the chair squeaking, if the engineer sifted in one of those perpetually squeaky studio chairs, during the recording, that sound can seem like the mic is right up to the chair, if there's any compression happening on the mic signal path (even to tape). I don't want to go into it, but I was an acquaintance/friend of Chris, since the 80's, so beyond all of the musical insight, it's nice to hear him like this, the stems being so revealing. I love your breakdowns of Chris' approach, and the respect he is given by others, even to this day. I have had the fortune of circumstance to know and be friends with a number of incredibly skilled and talented musicians - but even back in the Screaming Life time, I think pretty much everyone knew that Soundgarden - Chris in particular, but seriously ALL of them, were next level kind of talented. By Louder than Love, we thought they "arrived", but wow, how far they would go. Thanks again, Chris, and as with your other videos, such an exceptional breakdown of what is going on, insight into the process behind his singing, and connecting the dots for people. His singing got to that level just by him constantly pushing his boundaries of what he thought he was capable of, and learned more about what worked for his voice, and pushed himself further. People often miss that it was a journey for Chris, and as someone like you who has taken a close look at his skills and music, he would always do something different or new, or reinvent the wheel in a new way. Once again, great job.

What the actual fuck man, your voice sounds extremely good when you double it, you should definitely do an album or an ep using doubling in your voice. Great video, I learned a lot (and fell in love with doubling and your voice).

30:55 'Sounds like a chair creaking' that actually was a creaking chair. Chris Cornell recorded his vocals sitting down (during this session anyway). Warren Huart did an interview with Michael Beinhorn while going through this session. There were so many crazy anekdotes about this session. By the way, as far as I know there was no de-esser on Chris' vocals. Chris Cornell had AMAZING sibilance control. It's part of his signature singing style. It's something I've been experimenting with myself. Closing my lips a bit more and relaxing them, pulling back my tongue to reduce sibilance etc. It works really well. It's worth trying this stuff out.

Heyy I'm watchin your videos since a long time and I love them! You have a really great falsetto and head voice range, but I have a lot of trouble going high in a reinforced falsetto way, could you do a video where you give us some exercises to expand that part of the voice, because I feel like I need to get it down before mixed voice haha Great video by the way ;)
