Chris Davis went 0 for 54. It was the longest hitless streak in MLB history. The Baltimore Orioles slugger reached absolute rock bottom in an unforgiving sport, and the Chris Davis streak was an outcome. 0-54. It boggles the mind.
But there is a lesson to learned here. First and foremost, it deals with Statcast and expected batting average. Even though Chris Davis did in fact go 0 for 54, everything isn't quite as it seems. Statcast reveals just how unlucky he was. We'll also talk about the Shift, and how it relates to Davis's struggles. What happened to Chris Davis? You may ask. I'll do my best to answer.
In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I'll also talk about the good aspects of this unique streak. Even though he went through the worst slump in MLB history, he had the security of the Chris Davis contract. The Orioles themselves weren't competitive. And Davis handled the whole thing with class and poise. It really is a one in a million life lesson, and I intend to showcase that.

Baltimore resident here. Some of the local bars in Baltimore had a free shot and beer for everyone in the bar if Davis got a hit. Everyone was cheering him in after that.

@@psell8628 yes it is lol. Fielded (verb) cleanly (adjective-descriptive) by Greg Bird (Proper Noun) The word “ball” is outside of the sentence, but it is inferred. The ball is the subject. We learn this stuff in middle school, cmon. When speaking, words must be inferred if not directly spoken. It’s part of being a healthy speaker and listener.

There was 1 out with a guy on 2nd, even if Davis made an out there was a chance he'd advance the runner to third. Then if the next guy up gets a hit its a guaranteed run. However if you put Davis on the next guy may hit into a DP but if he gets a hit you may still hold the guy at third and still have a chance at a DP for the following guy too.

@@unkledoda420 You're overlooking that they had a 2 run lead in the 9th inning. It's almost never a good idea to purposely bring the go ahead or winning run to the plate in the 9th, especially when you're walking a terrible hitter to bring up a better hitter. The increased chance of a double play isn't worth it. Besides, your argument of Davis moving the runner to 3rd followed by a hit is pointless, since that first run doesn't matter anyway with that 2 run lead.

I was at the game where he broke his streak. I've never heard Fenway erupt quite like that. Sounded like we just won the World Series, not an opposing player getting a single. A-Rod's return to Fenway after his roid suspension, and a random brawl that Papi started (also against the Orioles) are the only two other games I can recall with a similar visceral reaction.

I’m honestly very happy you made this video, it might be one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made. Simply because, i’ve always had a soft spot for Chris Davis. 8 year olds take Adderall for adhd. I seriously doubt he had adhd and needed Adderall. I know what kind of advantage that kind of drug gives a person in baseball. I've witnessed it personally. Seeing how bad he was without it tells me all I need to know. He used it as a legal advantage since it was prescribed to him and he could get a waiver for it. Just like kids in college. Wouldn't doubt that's where he picked it up.

Good to see a Baseball Bit coming out during the week. And great to see one on Chris Davis. As somebody that lived in his hometown of Longview, Texas for several years I was always rooting for his success. It was hard watching him struggle like that, but thanks for putting things into perspective.

Chris Davis' streak really brought me back to the times when I would play RTTS and just couldn't buy a quality AB. Every well hit ball only has warning track power, every liner right at someone, every borderline pitch going against you, and the only times you get on base are dribblers that barely get through. Those downbad times have forever cemented for me that that shit is programmed into your character in some way and it became so frustrating that I have never picked the mode up again in a few years.

I love that ending comments about the "human condition." Even if it was slightly tongue-in-cheek, it resonated with me. Sometimes life just gets you down, and you go through a particularly bad streak. But, like Chris Davis, we have to just keep chugging along, keep trying, and something will eventually go right. And it seems like Chris didn't take it so seriously -- he asked for the ball when he finally got that hit. Another wonderful analysis Bailey. Love this stuff.

This really puts into perspective what fans see and what the player is actually going through during a rough stretch. We simply see zero and don't think about whether or not Davis is actually having good plate appearances. It can't be possible that he is if he's 0 for everything. Dope video as always.

I'd been avoiding this video for *checks date* 6 months because I love Chris Davis and I'm not a masochistic O's fan. But then I watched it and enjoyed every second of it. I especially enjoyed the home run you showed at 13:19, which was his first of three that night in 2012, because I am in the video racing after the homer on the flag court. Thanks for making this!

From what i've heard Chris has ADHD. He wasn't allowed to take his medication at some point, because it "might" have improved his performance. Essentially they considered it a PED from then on. It hurts to watch a great player fall like this.

Pretty sure if you test positive for stimulants you get suspended cause that stuff was so common in baseball back in the day

@@jeffshepherd1342 He did get suspended for it a few years ago, 50 games i believe. He was taking Adderall for ADHD.

@@unkledoda420 yes, he got suspended because he didn't have a prescription. He got a prescription and was given an exemption. If his exemption was rescinded that may have contributed to his sudden decline.

Chris Davis should send a portion of his check to Nelson Cruz every year. The Baltimore Orioles did not want to give Nelson Cruz a fourth year on his contract so he went to Seattle and exploded and when Chris Davis time came up they did not want to lose another home run champion and have him go somewhere and do the same thing. They bid against themselves when nobody else in baseball was offerering him a contract anywhere near that and when it was time to pay Manny Machado they didn't have the money. So in point they did not pay Nelson Cruz they could not play Manny Machado and they overpaid for Chris Davis that's the reason why the Orioles were such a crappy team for so long

Between September 15, 2018 and April 12, 2019, the following American League pitchers collected at least one hit: Heath Fillmyer Brad Keller Mike Minor David Price And Chris Davis, a position player, couldn't manage a single one, despite having almost four times as many at bats as those four pitchers combined. (Also Zack Greinke hit 2 homers in an 8-5 win over the Padres on April 2nd. God, I love Zack Greinke so much.)

It always looked like that. You'd think he'd be itching to swing hard, being amped up on amphetamines and all. Dude swings sooooo slowly. Smh. He was literally putting out the minimum effort possible. He wasn't playing because he loved baseball. He was playing because he had to. He obviously didn't wanna be there. Whether the speed had anything to do with that is anyone's guess.
