Terrific match, phenomenal athleticism and net play by Zina. Chrissie will always be my favorite for the true class act she was. Her display of sportsmanship especially in this tough defeat goes a long way. The hug in the end truly shows how much respect they had for eachother.

Zina played the perfect match for the situation. Chris didnt make the right adjustments, which was rare in her career. She (Evert) is, was the most consistent player ever to play the game.

yes and she even admitted to" not being the best athlete" which is why she had to use her smarts and ingenuity to win ,,crafty- like plays,,,move them around the court and then a sneaky drop shot,,bring them in then to hit an overhead lob,,or on the run she was famous for down the line "sneakers"threading the needle shots,,,,those were my favorite of chrissie's,,bc it take s alot of accuracy to do that,,,running then hit it between the line and the player /opponent

After her great win over Seles in the 4th round Chris was unable to produce that intensity here. It would have been great to see another Evert v Navratilova in the SF but Zina played well and fully deserved this win.

Yes she definitely earned the win ( you don't "deserve" a win you earn it). Agreed, it would have been amazing to see the final match between between Chris and Martina but Chris just didn't have in to reach that point. She was mentally done which was always her hallmark.

If Zina had played like this more often she would have been top 4 all the time in the 80s. To be honest I don’t even think Chris played that badly, Zina could just hit any shot and won with her variety. Such a talented player and was really dangerous when she was on

One of the occasions in Zina's career when she really kept her nerve and played really intelligent tennis. Too often, she let her nerves get the better of her.

More often than not. It's why she never won a major. She had the talent, but not mental to hold up over 2 weeks against all the pressure.
@luthorlex-fc9ft

@@johniii8147 She had talent but enough to win a major in that era? Questionable. She had a great all court game, but lacked a single stand out weapon, her forehand was prone to breaking down although it could be good when it was working, and she also had a bit of a weakness in shot selection.

Zina was a marvelous athlete, with major wins over Evert, Navratilova and Graf. She had all the shots and one of quickest sprinters about the court, I ever saw . She deserved a better career, but those three women above, just did not share well with players without the strongest of mental games. Not a lot of opportunityfor those who transitioned from the Evert/Navratilova era, and ,once those two finally retired, were left with Graf and Seles. Winning big time matches in big time tournaments takes experience and some practice on the big stage, that few got between 1978-1994.

Brian Turner Nope. After seeing this game, Zina had no backhand topspin, she kept slicing thru backhand which is one of the easiest shots to return in Tennis. Had she had a confidence in backhand topspin she would have finished off Chris Evert in no time rather than having long rallies that made her do hard work
@thequinnster72
@thequinnster72 9 жыл бұрын
ednan9 Actually, Zina did have a topspin backhand. She seemed to use it a lot more often earlier in her career. If you watch clips from '85 at Amelia Island (where she beat Evert in the final - on clay!) and '85 Wimbledon against Martina, she uses her topspin backhand routinely during rallies. I think using this slice was a tactic she started using in the late '80s in order to keep the ball low and without a lot of pace. It's difficult to generate any pace of your own off a soft, low ball.
@BTURNER1961
@BTURNER1961 9 жыл бұрын
Quinn Miller So true, it was 'book' to slice to Evert's backhand, since Billie Jean/ Evonne used to use underspin to deprive Evert of pace off that wing and ensure that she had to lift the ball over and down, instead of hitting through. Not many one-handers could overpower that backhand with topspin or flat shots. Evert got into such a groove against shots that bounced into her ideal hitting zone. Its smart to loop it high over her should, or keep it low.

+Brian Turner all true, kathy jordan with her extreme heavy slice on the backhand and junkballing it would drive evert nuts on her bad days... however, for the most part both with jordan and zina' chris on her good days and of course at her best would not be troubled by such tactics and would find a way to win against both of them as she did the great majority of the time.. but yes, that is the way to play evert as it is even nowadays against the big hitters who thrive on pace and only know how to hit hard and then harder..

Zina played a tactically brilliant match. Afterwards, Zina explained her strategy was to mix it up. Chris’ take was that Zina was hitting a bunch of junk. Maybe so, but highly tactical junk.

I'm surprised Chris was up 5-2 in that first set. She lacked pace and depths on her shots, unlike her previous match with Monica and some other matches in '89 against Graf and Sabatini. But Zina did well to mix it up and come back to win the set and the match.

Zina's said that her original plan for this match was to play all out serve and volley attack, but Sherwood Stewart (her mkxed doubles partner and sometimes coach) said to her that Chris would love the consistent target and pace. Instead, they decided that Zina should give Chris a lot of junk from the baseline and just float the ball back, before working her way into the net when the time was right. The plan was to make Chris work for absolutely everything, knowing that she wasn't as consistent as she used to be. It worked well for Zina, and Chris couldn't keep her game going after going ao far ahead in that first set. Zina started to relax and Chris's game started to disintegrate.

Chrissie Evert's last match ended at the 1989 US Open. Her goodbye to the stadium fans was a tearful one for her as she waved goodbye for the final time. For some reason watching this video I seem to think that perhaps Chrissie had mixed emotions about winning the match. Perhaps she wasn't ready to hang up her racquet but needed to, to satisfy her spouse, Andy Mill and her closest family members to begin a new life and start a family. I never felt she was ready. She still displayed a yen for the game and enjoyed the competiveness that a match brought on and the adrenaline rush she got from winning points. Zina Garrison was playing an aggressive serve and volley game and proceeded to win most of her points at the net like a modern day Navratilova. Garrison was a fierce competitor indeed but her career standings were a disappointment. She had a very good chance to be number one along with her long time hitting partner and pal Lori McNeil. We shall never know. Thanks for posting this one. I never got see the full match only clips on the late night news since I worked during the play hours when the match was being televised.

Chris had lost motivation by her own admission by 1989. She skipped paris because she just couldnt deal with the teenagers' moonballs. She said exactly that. Realize she hadnt won a title at all in 1989, hadn't won a grand slam since '86. She was far too proud to stay too long, so she left on her terms at # 4. I think she was #10 at year end. Chris also asked the WTA to remove her from the rankings at the end of the year to avoid seeing her ranking slide through lack of play. And to please her husband? What? Were you actually paying attention. Even at Wimbledon that year commentators questioned after she lost to Steffi if she would return to the All-England Club. Every ardent tennis fan knew Chris was retiring, well before she announced it in New York. Every Chris fan knew she was thinking about motherhood. She was 34. Would you rather her have played into the nineties, possibly losing seedings, and had to deal with a peak Seles while in her late thirties? She played brilliantly in fed cup in the fall, ending on a high. Ending her way.

I can vivdly remember picking up tennis racquet at 11 yrs of age, and running over to the public tennis courts in my neighborhood, in Brookland, Washington DC..very close to Catholic University. And yea...I loved watching the personalities in the game, then...there's no comparison, from that era to this era...the game was replete with all sorts of characters...show-offs and silent assassins, alike (Mac, King, Casals, Jimmy, V. Wade, Arthur, Borg, Noah, Nasty, Ruzici, Higueras, Eddie Dibbs, Camille Benjamin, Harold Solomon...I could go on and on). But the one player that "took me to school" everytime she swung her racquet or ran down a drop shot, was Chris Evert. I have no idea, why I paid so much attention to her style of play, besides the pure, simple effectiveness of it. But I hung in there with her and her results to the last match...and I remember tearing up, when she raised her hand to wave, goodbye....I remember that, like it was yesterday.

If Zina Garrison was more consistently stronger mentally, she would have won a grand slam title. So many talented players never won a slam due to their mental toughness like Garrison and Elena Dementieva. Coincidentally, both Garrison and Dementieva won Olympic Gold medals. Garrison had it all, except consistency on mental toughness. Women's Tennis have come a long way. The improvements on prize money in every round not just winning the title have generated more mentally tough players. Truly an improvement that players like Garrison had lend a hand in.

Before everyone jumps me but Chris. Has always struggled in her quarterfinal matches at the Open having her period in which she loses her pinpoint accuracy, her mobility, and strength . Matches against jeausovec in 80 Open look at her there , same here with her face flushed. Zina would’ve won anyway because she was peaking here. The year before she beat Martina, met Martina the following year at Wimbledon beating Seles and Graf to lose to. Martina in the final.

Zina always could pull out some big wins in majors, but never enough in a row to win the title. Even had she won the 88 and 89 U.S Open semis over Sabatini and Navratilova, she would have lost to Graf in the final both years. She was in a similar predicament to Berdych on the mens side, stuck in a tough era where she would always need 3 big wins to win a major, and it would always be 1 match/big win too far.

+Supa Kent agreed, evert would have been better off playing to zina's flat but erractic at times forehand... zina on her backhand hitting angles and hitting short on purpose, chipping, slicing and slowballing evert worked for zina in this match.. strange though that they had played earlier in the year at the lipton on the same similar surface and zina using the same tactics (like she always did with evert) and evert whipped her... this match was the epitome of the reason why it was time for evert to retire and she knew it...while they didn't play that much head to head, i believe zina only won twice against evert..

I don't think this was about what wing evert played, as evidenced by her win earlier in the year using those same tactics, Evert very rarely gave up 5-2 leads in her career against players outside the top two or three. That is what age did to her. It left her game sporadic, and unpredictable in quality. On the other hand I have never seen Zina play this well defensively. She was always one of the fastest women on the tour, but that did not mean her shots always went in like they did today. Evert had to win points three times over to actually win them. She was not up to it at 34 years old.

Who is the idiot that said Chrissie lost because she was playing pittpaty tennis?!!!! As Chrissie aged she definitely hit the ball harder, improved her serve and overhead and got much fitter!! The only reason it looks like weaker shots is because today's players have techniquely better racquets that produce more power!! Serena in Chrissie's era would be maybe a top ten player but not a champion!! Chrissie would have run her ragged, drop shot and topspin lobbed her to death!!

Evert SO tanked this match, whether consciously or subconsciously; probably the only match she ever “threw” in her entire career. She (understandably) did not want to end her career with the potential/probable loss to Navratilova in the next round. She built a 5-2 lead in this contest playing her usual aggressive game, and then started playing glaringly obvious, stilted, patty-cake tennis. Don’t blame her. She was done with the game and had scored such a rewarding victory by crushing young Seles the previous round. I say she looked at the big picture (sick of tennis, last tournament ever, Martina The Nemesis waiting in the semis) and said “To hell with it. I’m done.”

Chris looking very haggard here. She really didn't age well. She looks great today though! God bless plastic surgery!

James G I only mention it because (bizarrely) Evert was often stated to be good looking. I guess it’s all relative.

I'm sure your aging amazingly! What a crap thing to say. You probably know all about plastic surgery yourself.

once a weak player always a weak player..and palease there's no excuse here about chrissie being old.. she's just weak hitter as always that's all, and her weak hittings doesn't work no more against these younger generations, duh.. and actually she's even hittin harder in her old age but not good enuff against the likes of steffi..

A weak player? what acid are you on exactly? She has the highest winning percentage in the open era, man or woman. 18 Grand Slam titles. She beat Steffi the first 7 times they played, yes you could say Steffi was young then but you could also say Chris was old when Steffi beat her the next 7. Chris also had a huge rivalry with Navratilova, also arguably one of the best female tennis players in history, beating her many times. Chris also hit a flat ball that was as accurate as they came, which may appear "weak" as you say but got her all those wins. Her placement was second to none, her lob was phenomenal and her passing shots were the best you could see. She is one of the greats of history. Your analysis is crackpot.

Umm....yea....Chrissie was in the last year of her career and it is an age thing. You sure didn't explain yourself very well and from your grammar, I'm guessing you struggle with the English language.
