The all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance is here. Chris Harris takes a walk-around to discuss the car and go over some of its features.
The new car features a hybrid powertrain with only four-cylinders for its ICE component, which still required an elongation of its engine bay over the base chassis.
Weighing well over two tonnes and with a smaller boot thanks to the hybrid powertrain, the German car still produces 680hp!

I'd go as far as saying Chris talks more sense than Clarkson.. The latter would rarely lift the bonnet to show the internals.. Chris is a legend..

I own a c63 507 edition and let me tell you, there is no better feeling then having the knowledge that under my right foot I have the command of 500 stallions that stand to attention at the mere extension of my right foot. Listening to that deep rumble with an undertone of " push me too hard and I'll kill you" at 8am before work on a winters morning !

@@systemsbroken hell no, that does not compete with the old c63, its a completely different category of car, the c63 was a sports car, the e63s has less soul with the turbos and its a massive heavweight hippo limo that is a luxury family car that tries to be sporty

Most people don’t buy an AMG to be the fastest car on the street. It’s to hear the glorious noise of the V8. You can rarely use all that power that the old car had, much less this new one. Thus “more performance” is not a substitute for removing the V8.

The best part of the 63 AMG cars is the start up noise, and low rpm burble, remove that and you haven't got the same vibe at all. The top performance metrics are irrelevant to actual enthusiasts.

Mercedes was able to make the heavy gt63s 4door to be a GREAT track car so im sure they can engineer this thing to do the same. Idk how they do it but they're the masters of suspension, comfort and control

Yes, a heavier car can perform almost as good as a lighter model by engineering larger tires, brakes, engine.. But you'll replace them much more often and/or it'll be much more expensive without even considering fuel consumption.. You can solve the weight problem with a lot of engineering and money or you can solve it at its roots.. Light is right!

That is exactly right. Besides that, the performance is only when there is grip available from the road. When there isn’t, for example on snow, you will be unceremoniously thrown into the scenery with your six figure two tonnes amg

True, but since this beast is a hybrid with a four cylinder engine, I would expect reasonable fuel economy during sedate driving. That is, if anyone ever drives it sedately!

For real man. This is probably the first time I disagree with Chris to be honest. Sure, you might be able to 'cheat' with improved technology - but you'd get even more amazing performance if you applied that technology to a lighter car in the first place!!

More important than the cost of consumables, a heavy car cannot help but feel ponderous in corners because all that mass has to change direction, fighting inertia all the way. This is why a sports car’s low weight is more important than its engine power for driving in the twisties.

It's just so fiendishly complex, there's no way you'd want to own one after the 3 year warranty! The servicing, running and repair costs will be astronomical.

Drove my mint 2010 C63 P31 yesterday. The chuckle and chills it's start up sound gives me every single time will never be matched by this thing. Ever. If I want 700hp, I bolt a supercharger kit on it. But honestly, the dynoed 494hp it puts down stock are entertaining enough for me. The interior sure looks impressive, but also a bit overwhelming.

Couldn't agree more. W204 C63 can be used, & used, & used. Eventually, I suppose they'll all need a top end rebuild but after that you can continue to use it as long as parts & fuel are available. This thing showcased in this video is found in the crusher no later than 50k miles. Brilliant on paper, a joke made in poor taste in real life imo. The only way a dealership is servicing these things is by video calls made to Stuttgart.

@@keithpritchard5791 that's 6 year old logic. "This one is faster, so it's better". Or, even more immature logic, "you can't afford this, so you're not better". Most of us outgrow such ways of thinking. That new thing will also be faster in reaching the junkyard where it will spend the majority of its life. That, or the parking lot of the dealership once the entire hybrid system fails the week after warranty expires. Those last few sentiments are how adults think.

Thanks Chris. Struggling not to say that the best thing about the old C63 was the sound track from that glorious 6.2L V8. One of the few cars I will always drop a window to listen to as it goes past. I know it has been a 4.0L TT V8 for a while and that sounded good enough. But this? I suppose for most of us the glory of a machine like this is the experience of the non-driver as that is how those of us who can't afford or justify one with man-maths experience it. From that perspective this feels like a loss. But then we're not the ones keeping Benz in business.

Remember being in my mates 6.2 c63 coupe years ago, warm late summer evening with the windows and sunroof open and that amazing soundtrack, it did have a aftermarket exhaust but can’t remember the brand. The sound Is definitely one of the best parts of having a c63.

The same thing happened in the 80s-90s with JDM cars. The majority of performance cars of that era and before (60s-80s) had big displacement engines and once small displacement, high revving engines such as the 4G63, RB26, 2JZ..etc. entered the market, the majority were skeptical. Now a lot of us consider those engines as some of the best sounding ever. Its all relative on what our idea of performance sounds like. Maybe in 10 years we will think these sound great?

What will happen once that car gets to five years old or even ten years old. Will it become a classic like the 6.3 V8 W204? I'm thinking batteries getting old, the four cylinder engine getting tired because it is such a high stressed motor? Somehow I just cant see the W206 C63 being a good long term proposition. I may be wrong.

All the screens will break, all the sensors for the myriad driving assists will break. This will all be Mercedes specific parts that can only be fixed by them and need coding with their software. You may as well light your money on fire.

Will be outdated in 4 years. The 6.3 isn't. You can't outdate that noise and it's Plenty fast enough. I said in a previous comment, if you can afford this car, why wouldn't you buy a real c63 and an EV?

Mr Harris, I don't think I'll ever get to drive C62 AMG of any generation, yet it makes me sad to see the V8 go away. My favorite little brown man and car youtuber, no homo. I don't care how powerful it is, these cars have been more powerful than most of us normals can safely use, for a long time. The greatest appeal of these AMGs has been their amazing sound track from those V8s. I'll never busy one of these and will keep my V8 for ever, even if I have to replace everything, owning an AMG is about that guttural V8 experience for the ICE engine generations. This is a great car for a hairdresser or a Hollywood corn holer.

I don't think I'd be as annoyed if they'd managed to get a 6 under there. Maybe it's just me, but I don't want a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder in my sport saloon. It's the reason why I bought my 1 series over a Golf GTi, and everything I've had before that. I'd definitely still rather have an M3, even with that ghastly front end, I think I like the RS4 more than this too. I just thing the weight is silly too. If everything we drive is over 2 tonnes our roads don't stand a chance of staying in one piece. I get it though, it's not for me. Shame, because my favourite car I've ever owned was my E46 330i estate, and I've always wanted a 6.2 C/E63.

Maybe. A 4 pot would be cheaper to run less spark plugs one air filter less engine oil etc etc.. And that electric motor giving the initial shove would take some stress out of the motor dragging all that weight around.. Might be surprisingly agile....

Cheers for the video, i personally loved the techy data stuff - please don't stop "boring" us! Not enough people dare (or care) to do the informative bits these days.. Can't wait to see how these new machines will hold up throughout the years! I would love to drive one despite being very conservative in regards to driving emotion, though it's probably lovely in its own right. BUT if I had the money I would rather buy an old E55, a Citroen XM V6, and a BMW E39 528i Touring to do all the things that this car does (except the frugality of the powertrain of course) The future is inevitable though but luckily it doesn't look too boring, although a bit quiet/synthetic.. Oh well, I'll enjoy the old cars while still possible and make use of the advancements in tire technology. And if anyone has read this far, thank you and have a lovely day and weekend!❤️

Have to say I hadn’t looked at any reviews of this cos it didn’t interest me with I4/EV but you’ve explained it really well, especially it’s a performance EV stance rather than just for economy. Truth is even being a bit portly makes little difference in the real world of day to day driving. They’ll be eye wateringly expensive here in Aus. I think 680hp on the public road is getting a bit silly now though…

they had to rack it up, because even with 680hp it's still slower than m340i or m3 touring starting from the red lights... poor engineering on Mercedes side in my view, with the lump, poor handling and acceleration (for the amount of hp and money). Reminds me of various big American 'muscle' cars that have amazing specs on paper but can't corner or even transfer the full power in a straight line

@@lechprotean Lots of performance assumptions for a car that hasn´t done a single mile on road or track in hands of any car journo. There is not a thing to be said about this car before there is some data out in the real world. It´s sad they´ve gone the downsizing/hybrid route. But I think this is a car that might be an absolute shocker in terms of real world performance. It might just be able to smoke every competing car there is, with all wheel drive and over 1000NM system output... Hard beating that with an M340i...

It looks amazing on the outside but people forget how important the engine sound is to the experience of driving. But things like air con controls all on the screen is a nightmare to use. That alone is enough for me to say no.

I wanted to doubt this car. But Mercedes really seem to be pulling out all the stops. The C63 uses the same Tenneco CVSA2 suspension system as the AMG GT Black. The GT Black's extra 200kg over the GT2RS didn't seem to hurt it too much. With that suspension, the battery pack at the rear and over 50% of the weight at the rear the new C63 should be pretty interesting dynamically. (50/50 is NOT ideal despite what bmw says) AMG has to be benchmarking the G80 M3 internally. Because if this car comes out and with all its E Performance tech it looses to a ICE only G80 it will be completely useless. I'm kind of suspicious why the press drive only had journalists ride along with engineers and not driving impressions from the journalists.

If I remember correctly this car despite extra power is no faster than current M3, because it's so damn heavy, so I really don't see the point. And Merc have said that emissionwise they could have made it V8. Which they should have. I'd take the Alfa.

@@maggotpudding Yeah good point I remember that. They said they could have done a V8 what a shame. Do you know if the 2020+ Alfa's have improvements over the early ones. A friend owned a 2018 gulia qv and it was absolutely an Alfa. He road tripped it down from Washington to California picking me up along the way. Driving through California back roads all three of us fell in love with the car. Incredible ride refinement and rev happy engine on the highway, amazing light but sharp steering, chassis with incredeble dynamics that flows with the road, and the most exciting lovely short gears in the corners. I was convinced I was going to buy one. Untill we got to Angeles crest and the thing went into limp mode with 4000 miles on the clock. We bought a code scanner and it kept happening. We realized it needs the tank well over half full or else it can't be driven hard. The harder we drove it the weirder the brake pedal felt. When the rest of the car is so fucking perfect even a small inconsistency in the brake is noticeable. Plus the rear diff doesn't lockup at low speeds leaving it spinning one wheel many times. I realized as good as the car was I couldn't own one with all these issues. In 4 days I fell in love with the car only for it to break my heart. It's a true Alfa in every sense.

I am very disappointed to learn that Chris Harris, who I personally consider as a strong petrolhead and an honest person having criticized ferrari in the past, appraises a 4 cylinder engine in an amg car. Comparing its 10 second power output (when the battery is charged and when the appropriate mode is selected) with the m4 6 cylinder engine, sounds to me like a comparison other type of reviewers would make. Additionally it is not mentioned that by ditching the V8 c63 loses the one major advantage all these years had: the biggest engine among the other german performance cars in its class that produced the best soundtrack. Nowadays it packs the smallest engine with a sound vw golfs naturally produce. I personally believe that there is no point for anyone having the previous c63 downgrading to that year’s model, after all driving a sports car is an emotional experience.

If they did like they did in the new C43 AMG, a 48 volts mild hybrid, that would be cool! A45s engine + electric assisted turbo + 20hp/200nm electric motor to help at low rpm and totally eliminate turbo lag. Combined a total of 500hp and at least 650nm of torque. A 8 or 9 speed DCT, RWD only, making it lightweight with carbon panels and so on, no rear steering because it feels awkward, focus on the driving experience, exhaust note, feedback from the controls, dynamics etc... I believe it would be a sucess. Because having a lightweight 4 cylinder over the front has its advantages, however it has to sound good otherwise the experience is lost. Overall with the carbon parts it would be a lighter car than the M3, it would be more agile and more precise, probably even more fun if they did it right.

Since most of the extra weight in this car is added solely to enhance dynamics, this car will feel light-footed. It will be far more nimble and wieldy than AMG sedans of the past. Does more capability mean more engagement? Set it to drift mode, then decide for yourself.

I get the whole 'cheating physics' point, but just imagine all of that same tech applied to a car that actually was light. Imagine say an M3 that had all of the chassis and tire advancements of the last 25 years but weighed 3,200 lbs (the weight of an E36 M3) instead of the 3,900 lbs it weighs today. I get where the weight comes from (the whole turbo system on an M3 probably weighs 100+ lbs, the stronger stiffer shell certainly adds weight, the beefier drivetrain components to handle the additional power all add weight as well) but the question is are the things that are adding all of this weight the same things that are actually making the cars better or are they just the things that are making them pointlessly faster? I am a good driver, I have the lap times to prove it, M3s have been too fast for me to use at their limit in the real world since the E92. Hell my stage 1 Mk7 Golf R is pretty close to the limit of what I can push on anything reasonably tight. I enjoy the thrust of a powerful car on the straights as much as the next guy, but performance I can't use is wasted, and when it comes at the expense of the pleasure of driving that I can enjoy at real world speeds then it becomes less than useless. Anyways, thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

The trouble with this car is they've gone all in to give it all the things I don't want. Such power look very much - No thanks C63 was already more than powerful enough. Electric parts zap zap very quiet - I'll take the rolling away quietly but not at the cost of a load of added electric gubbins that can and do go wrong at great expense. Again, I don't need the power. Technology though surely blip bloop many screens push push yes - Fuck no, screens belong on a table or in your pocket. 99.9% of owners will use 1% of the tech in this car. It goes brum and moves me about, I don't need to know what the weather is two weeks from now, I don't need to talk to a nice German lady to activate this month's heated steering wheel subscription, just please fuck off. It looks nice but in all the ways that are meaningful to me it's worse than the old car. The V8 was already comfortably twice as fast as you would ever ever need in the UK, has more space inside, less technology to go wrong and - yes I'm going to say it - sounds like a fucking V8, this sounds like a Hoover on nitrous. Also about the weight, yes tire tech has come a long way, yes designers do a great job as masking the weight - but that all applies at 1700kg too, if 2.3 ton cars can drive like an old 1.8 ton car then imagine how well they would do at 2.0 ton. You can't just say it's OK because it drives better than a 30 year old car.

I think one of the issues here is the current E63 can be easily tuned to well over a 1000bhp. Can this pull those numbers? Probably not. The E63s dominate top end figures on the track, will this be able to do the same thing? I’d guess not. And lastly, I can picture a certain Gordon Murray hearing you say 2100kg isn’t that bad in a road car and having an immediate case of diarrhoea.

how many buyers want to tune their very expensive car and void the warranty? this is extremely impressive for an off the shelf car, which is how 99% of owners will keep it. most won't see anything close to a track. car guys need to come back down to earth for a second. you know, reality.
