Chris Martin lived an incredible life, cut short by a rare soft tissue sarcoma in 2015 - just 2 years after he first visited the doctor for a lump under his right arm.
As principal private secretary to former prime minister David Cameron, Chris worked throughout his diagnosis and treatment, including 9 rounds of chemotherapy and additional radiotherapy, searching for answers about the most effective treatment for his type of cancer.
His wife, Zoe Conway, speaks about his life, his diagnosis, and how Chris believed that genetic research was one of the keys to unlocking the puzzle of sarcoma.

I have been diagnosed with myxsofibro sarcoma in beginning of last August. I had a tutor in my thigh. I have had 2 operation and 30 session of radiotherapy. It's so hard to imagine what has happened to me and my family. I am around 45. Everyday 3 months I should do chest x-ray or CT scan, because tumor might be back in my lungs. I left everything to God and pray for everyone.

I have a leiomyosarcoma in my left ankle. So many CT scans then MRI another with contrast. Then biopsy. So many different Dr's. Talk about amputation of my left ankle,but I refused. If I have an amputation, I could omit radiation therapy to shrink the tumor. I just can't see loosing my foot, not at my age. I wish you well,I pray for all of us. Sarcoma are a totally different type of cancer.

I myself started with left foot sarcoma now in my lungs now I was told it may be in my liver also. It's scary 😟.

My wife was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in May of this year. Her treatment is working and in thousands of prayers I believe Jesus will save her.

@Popcorn Boxing 🍿🥊 Unfortunately my wife has past away leaving behind my self and 2 small children 3 weeks ago. Her treatment stopped working and spread to her liver and stomach. My Beautiful wife has died at the age of 42. Fuck Cancer and the entire institutions. My advice to anyone if things are working get a second opinion and take anything you can naturally no matter what doctors say especially for this type of cancer. .

I am sorry for your lost. In March of this year my brother was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in the groin. Today doctors decided that the cancer is aggressive will start chemotherapy tonight.

I was diagnosed with dedifferentiation liposarcoma about a month ago, it was a 4.5*3.5*5.5cm tumor in my left leg. I'm 38 years old, live in Beijing China. My only son just 1 year old, I don't know how long time I could see him.😢

@@chayamiriamweisman3733 Thank you very much. I found the best cancer hospital in China, where the pathologists believed that I had pleomorphic liposarcoma. Since the first surgery was an unplanned resection, I had a second surgery, which expanded the removal of some skin, muscle, and fat, and I had 6 chemotherapy sessions, as the AI regimen. As of today, it has been half a year since the surgery, and more than a month since the chemotherapy ended. I am in good condition now. I want to take advantage of my current condition to live well and travel with my family.

I was diagnosed with sarcoma about a month ago, and I start radiation in 7 days. I am a 74 year old male in Arizona USA. It was misdiagnosed as a rotator cuff issue in my left shoulder. The outcome looks favorable, but who knows. Curiously, my son was diagnosed and cured of sarcoma about 4 years ago. He is now cancer-free, with regular check-ups.

I was diagnosed with sarcoma last year and I had undergone surgery and now follow ups every three months. It’s really scary, every visit fills me with apprehensions. I pray it doesn’t come back.

I just had a plemorphic abdominal wall sarcoma removed.....it came about due to my radiation for my other Stage 4 cancer.....and I am grateful I am alive but terrified of the pathology. God bless you Chris.....

Diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma. 7 more radiation visits then surgery. First option was to amputate my foot an ankle. I just can't. Limb sparing surgery is what I'm trying. Pet scan shows no growths at present. No chemo for it doesn't help. Prayers please

I’m sorry for your loss, my wife is in hospital currently and is the same age, she has had a tumour removed from her brain three weeks ago which they thought was a meningioma, today they’ve found it’s already growing back and are concerned it’s a metastasis from a sarcoma in her abdomen

In the US @ 2% of all annual cancer claims fall into the category of sarcoma. In that category there are between 50 - 60 different types of sarcoma. I know this because I was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma with baseball sized tumor in my leg after initial misdiagnoses by my primary who diagnosed cyst or lipoma. I was lucky I had the Mayo Clinic and Emory but even they were very up front in saying we will try and throw everything at it but there is no confirmed cure on record. This cancer does not have the DX volume breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, leukemia (etc) does so it understandably does not get the attention, focus, funding that the biggies do where there are more lives to save with each winning cure. I never heard of Sarcoma before my DX and I spent my career in the health and disability insurance business. I have been fighting this stage 4 reoccurring DX for years with repeated surgeries, radiation therapies, chemos and immunotherapy. Each time we think we have it another tumor(s) show up a year after the last one(s). This cancer 🎗is an unknown evil that needs more exposure, more attention and effort, more funding, more research, more results, more lives saved.

I totally agree with you. My wife had no symptoms besides started with back pain. All standard physicals and blood work came back normal till diagnosed at stage 4 and battled hard for 14 months . We lost my beautiful wife and the greatest mother of my 2 young children 1 month ago. How she you doing now ?

Have a leiomyosarcoma in my left ankle. Orthopedic Surgeon sending for more CT scans today then total body scan on Friday. Thinking it's stemming from another part of my body. Abdominal and pelvic scan showed nothing,lower lungs were in scan and normal. Today I get full chest CT. She's talking about removing my foot above the ankle. Be better than trying to salvage the foot, and sure to get all the cancer. Tho these cancers spread aggressive. I just can't right now. Being my age of 70 do I really want to spend what time I have in hospitals and Dr offices?

In 2021, I began having issues with my left thigh. I exercised and got weaker. I was misdiagnosed with sciatica. It wasn't until my leg super swelled and I was brought to the ER that I was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma in December 2022. My quadriceps were destroyed and the sarcoma was 17.6 pounds and was removed in April 2023 after 25 rounds of radiation. I was diagnosed with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma in my neck in January of 2024 and just had 99% of it removed. The doctors want me to have radiation again and a year of immunotherapy with a port they will insert into my chest. I am doing all I can to stay alive and am praying there is a way to stop this. I am very sorry for the loss of your husband and appreciate your information.

My mom died last year due to a rarare eating disorder called Achalasia 😢. She was and will always be my favorite person and I hope and pray to meet her again insha Allah in a better place without all the pain we went through last year. Chemo does not work with sarcoma. As a 11 year survivor i only had surgery refused radiation. I had stage 3 undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in my adductor muscle. I feel very lucky to have survived but i believe it was due to a good surgeon, diet, exercise and supplements.

I had a breast sarcoma removed 6 weeks ago. A Phyllodes Tumor. I have declined radiation due to age and location. I take Black Seed oil 1 t. daily. Eat garlic hummus and have no sugar but I did cave a few times. I feel fine but I need to get a CT. 9.5 cm tumor encapsulated. I want to try the Joe Tibbens treatment with Panacur de-wormer and Curcumin. I also take very small amount of THC gummy.

I know only too well this journey having gone through the process. I'm a lucky one (at least so far). The problem is too few of us to put the funding in place. If you get cancer pray you get a common one (although I obviously wouldn't wish that on anyone)

Most patients would be told they had a lump and not to worry about it. Could they have diagnosed this cancer with a biopsy? If so, I'm sure it could have been done in his doctor's office. I guess it depends where the lump is, but they only have to take out a small amount of tissue. I used to be a nurse but I'm no expert obviously. In all my years of nursing I have never seen a patient with a soft tissue sarcoma. Osteosarcomas yes, though they a still fairly rare. RIP Chris, taken way too soon.

I assisted in the removal of a huge soft tissue sarcoma. He was given less than 2 months to live.

They do a needle biopsy under CT scan to get a clear view of the tumor,veins an other structures they need to bypass. It's done thru radiology with a specialist in Radiology under sterile conditions. I had one done two weeks ago from a lump in my ankle. 2 MRI had done been done showing a tumor. Biopsy report came back as a very rare Leiomyosarcoma. Orthopedic Surgeon I have specializes in oncology surgery. She thinks the best way to go is to remove the foot above the ankle. I was immediately saying no. Her come back is well you will have the best of plastic surgeon but a skin graft with a section of vein will be needed. Also a vascular surgeon. No guarantees on how well the blood will be,causing necrosis plus the high chance of infection. All this would lead to another surgery to remove the foot. Going for a pet scan to see if it has spread. A CT has shown no tumors in my body but Pet scan is needed also. Before surgery 5 weeks of radiation tho radiation doesn't seem to help nor does chemo. As a matter of fact these cancers can be caused by radiation exposure. I will be seeing an oncologist after the pet scan results come in. Maybe the oncologist will have news of a different treatment than the same old radiation chemo and surgery. Maybe gene therapy. IDK. But it seems a waste of my time when I probably have so little left. Who wants to spend it all at Dr's offices and hospitals being even more sick from just the treatments? My orthopedic surgeon won't accept not getting treatment. But i have read the outcomes. What I have only a few cases known I think 26 cases since 1934. Something like that. Survival is 13% if it has spread. 65% if it hasn't. 50% chance of it returning in two years in other area of body. I'm 70 an I love my family love my gardens. Done spent two weeks doing Spring clean up. Planting a few lilac bushes putting bio' tone on all my plants . Cutting back my roses and cleaning out ftom under them. Loosening the dirt around them to add rose bio tone. I live on the U.S. in the south. Been having spring weather an so much is in bloom early this year. So much I want to enjoy but o suppose my time is nearing. One way to look at it,is I git time to spend with those I love. And let them know it's ok. What to do? I know in my heart I don't want to do any of this an I know the outcome but the outcome is going to be the same . May buy a little time Maybe. But is that time worth it?

Had it in my kidney at 17 years it was in my lungs too but they wanted to wait and see how I’m dealing with it in my lungs and the doc is telling me it most likely will just keep appearing and that chemo won’t help now I’m just waiting to remove the 2nd one in my lungs and see if anymore pop up

My husband had an Atypical Liposarcoma after a blunt force trauma bike accident cycling up MT Diablo State Park in Danville. he soon after had a football size tumor growing out of his fracture rib. He saw several Doctors before going to UCSF. It has been a rough road for over 10 years of recovery and being able to run cross country again. He lives in Chronic pain, and is with UCDavis now. He’s been in studies, and is an anomaly for what he went through, and is doing now to fight his way back.

Hai, iam from India ( Kerala) my mother was diagnosed since 1and half years with grade 1 sarcoma she is having 66yrs, doctors told chemo will not respond and the only option is surgery but it's not possible at this age, so she is undergoing treatment with ayurveda since 1and half years, but now she experience abdominal distention and discomfort since 3days she know it Will completely recover from the disease but the only thing she want to eliminate the pain and this discomfort, what we do for this distention if anybody can answer please😢,😢🙏🙏🙏
