The point "God" will always be Magic Johnson in my book. I know that the modern crowd will say that it's Steph which to me is ridiculous. If you want to call Steph the best shooter ever that is just fine but the best point guard? Is he a better passer than Magic? A better playmaker? A better rebounder? A better defender? There are a lot of facets to playing PG beyond shooting.

While Steph is CLOSER to the top of the all time point guard list than Chris Paul, he still isn't in the same stratosphere as Magic. Magic will likely ALWAYS be the EASY GOAT PG.
@sgrey9181

@@skap_attack Disagree. If Steph wins another finals, we will have to have a serious debate. Even as it stands right now, even though I also take Magic over Steph, I understand why somebody would take Steph over Magic. They’re such different players, and comparing them is tricky. Steph is never playing as a center, but Magic isn’t averaging 30 ppg. What I’m saying is, roles have evolved over time. If you’re looking for a pure PG, I would take prime Isiah Thomas over Magic (since Magic wasn’t a “pure PG”).

This is slander, cp3 in damn near 20 years has averaged 47% from the field, 36.8 from 3, 9.4 assist with only 2.4 turnovers while getting 2 steals a game effectively evening out his pass turnover ratio. I forgot to mention 87% free throw percentage all while being only 6 ft tall. What he did to the spurs in 2015 was fucking epic but hampered him in the next series against Houston. He may not be the most accomplished but his heart and overall efficiency is hard to match. He doesn’t miss many shot and he isn’t a turnover machine. If Westbrook had that kind of finesse I’d argue he would’ve been the absolute goat

Chris Paul has a complex legacy. He's only reached a finals once and only made past the 2nd round twice, was not liked by maybe a lot of his former teammates and has been on 6 teams in his career, leaving at least 3 of those teams on not so great to pretty bad terms. but to my eye, and as someone who values the "pure" point guard position more then any other position in basketball, I believe he is the 5th or 6th greatest point guard in NBA history (Magic, Steph, Thomas, Oscar, Kidd, Stockton...Paul?) EVERYWHERE Chris Paul has been, they have won and been a playoff contender at the very least. He was the biggest reason for the Clippers becoming perennial 50+ regular season winners and was a bad hamstring away from very possibly winning a ring with James Harden. Not to mention he might have had his greatest season with the highly overachieving OKC Thunder under his leadership. No I don't think he ever could have been the best player on a title winning team but he IS one of the greatest point guards ever and an unquestioned HOF.

Read an article back in 2018 about how CP3's career was such a perplexing enigma in how he hits certain metrics that put him in an exclusive club with all-time players, yet he had (at the time) never even sniffed a Finals series. He's vastly benefited every team he's been on. Took the lottery-bound Thunder to the playoffs. Blake Griffin, Deandre Jordan probably owe him half their career earnings. Had the GSW super team on the ropes in the 2018 WCF. Is still playing at a high level at age 38 at a position that's VERY unkind to old little guys. He clearly has the drive, intelligence and skills of a champion. It just shows how hard it is to win in the league; so many things have to go right, and a lot of it is out of the hands of any player.

I agree with almost everything you said, but I think it shows more of how hard it is to move the needle as a small player. I don't think CP3 as ever truly had a "Great" team that could survive without him, that and injuries I think hurt him the most.

But is Steph overrated? Honestly, I think he is properly ranked. I believe he is the best player of this era of basketball and overall I believe he is like the 11 or 12 best player ever, I think that is reasonable. Not only that but people actually want to watch Steph play, he is a fun player to watch. On the other hand I 100% believe Lebron is incredibly overrated. He is not someone you want to watch play compared to like Curry or KD. The only reason people want to watch him is most likely cause of his status in the league. You can see his propaganda from light years away, he couldn't dominate when he stacked everything in his favor (2011, 2013, 2014, 2015) and etc. @@skap_attack

Such a good list of poing guard names you mentioned there above CP3! My list is pretty much the same, the order of names probably different in a few spots around 5-10 spot range. Although there is one name I did not see or hear mentioned I probably would also put above CP3. How about Gary Payton? He probably is the best defensive pg of all time during his prime and could still put up 24/9/6 averages offensive during his prime. DPOY winner and a champion aswell. Sure CP3's 'prime' has been a bit longer but The Glove still won more and made more finals aswell. I would rank Payton higher than CP3.

100% I agree with you. An obvious omission on my part. The GLOVE goes above CP3 as well in my book. And I would really have to think about the specific order of this list. The only player that I would say I did in definitive order was the top spot, Magic (of course).
@Zamppa86

@@skap_attack Magic is number one and will be a long time, maybe 'forever'. Then I have three names to place 2-4 but even for me it's difficult to say which one to put over another: Big O, Zeke and West. Yes, I consider Jerry West as a pg here even though he played both guard positions during his career. From 5 onwards it becomes even more difficult to rank one over another as some people around those ranks won more individually and some won more with their teams. Names like Stockton, Curry, Frazier, Kidd, Cousy and Payton come to mind. There we already have 10 names who definitively are ahead of CP3 no matter how we look at it. After that we can start to talk about Nash for example. CP3's regular season numbers, and longevity stats, are rather nice, impressive even, but I would still say he is barely top 15 at best.

Fantastic analysis and accurate reading of the overrated players in this era. The only issue I have is not classifying Steph as a point guard. He definitely is - he is just a scoring one. No one else on that team would come close to classifying as a point other than him, who has the ball and initiates most of the offense even though he does give the ball up and get it back a ton. In my view, these discussions always start and end with titles won as your team's best player, FMVPs won, MVPs won, DPOYs won. Magic (5, 3, 3, 0), Steph (2, 1, 2, 0- KD best player on 2 titles teams), Isiah (2, 1, 0, 0), Stockton (2 appearances in finals as team's best player, statistically more dominant than Kidd), Kidd (2 appearances in finals as team's best player), in that order.

I agree with this, he's not a "traditional" point guard, but he definitely is a point guard. Sure, he's a combo guard type, but the offense still runs through him and he still operates from the top of the key, which are textbook point guard traits. You don't need to average 10+ assists to be a PG. Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson had their best seasons when they started playing off the ball more. Hell, even CP3 started having more success playing off the ball. Ball dominant reliance on your PG for assist's is a system that has proven time and time again to fail in the playoffs.

Very interesting and well fleshed out take, Skap! It’s refreshing to see these videos and hear the same rhetoric I’ve always said. Chris Paul is like a Bentley that was purchased from a police auction. On the surface, it looks good. Hell, it may even drive good. But underneath that hood, something is missing, making the car unreliable. That’s what CP3’s career seems like to me. For all the stats and high regular season winning percentage, come play off time, that next gear is absent. Much like a component in the aforementioned Bentley. Whether it’s inefficient play, or a well timed and convenient injury, he’s always falling short in the playoffs. And this may be an unpopular take, but he was in the same draft as Deron Williams. While Williams didn’t have the longevity that Paul had, at their peaks, I’d say Williams was the better PG.

The CP3 Disrespect MUST STOP. 1st of all, CP3 wasted his Prime like 7-8 Years Playing for nothing with the Hornets. 2nd CP3 is like 5’9” and has played damn near 20 Seasons and made Multiple AllStars!! 3rd if CP3 played with a Player like Mailman or Kareem or SHAQ or even Embiid he could have had the Same Success as other All-Time Great PGs.

I've thought that for a long time as well. To play just a little devil's advocate for CP3 one little factoid about him literally nobody talks about is that he's one of only 3 players from the 2008 Redeem Team to never play with another member of that team in the NBA, the other 2 Tayshaun Prince and Michael Redd who were on their last legs by then. Definitely ended up being the odd man out of the nuclear arms race that was the super team era. But honestly, the last 6-7 years he has had some great talent, he's just too short to play defense in the playoffs lol. Plus like, there were rarely points over the span of his career where he was considered the best even among his peers. Maybe in 2007 & 2008 when he was reaching his peak and Nash and Kidd were declining he was but after that there were a couple years where the consensus that Deron Williams was the best (let that sink in), then a couple years where D-Rose was until...ya know. I guess for a couple years it was CP3 again by default but then Curry came into his own and the rest is history. Hell, make a definitive case he's higher than Kyrie all time.

I think Paul is an all time great. I just do not think he is in the upper echelon of those all time greats. In my opinion, (as you mentioned them) both Kidd and Nash actually had fairly significantly higher peak than Chris Paul. And those two generally are never discussed within the conversation of the top 5 all time PGs. Yet, here is CP3 LOL. The reason I included the backend of this video was to accentuate that point. Ultimately, there are a finite amount of positions when we are talking about top 5 or top 10, and there are A LOT of great players who have come along in this sport.

@@skap_attack Absolutely, the only reason I think he gets mentioned in the top 5 is because a lot of pundits today are in love with longevity because of LeBron, but I've always thought that was kind of asinine since sports medicine and training are only gonna improve so that's something that's always going to get better every generation. I will say with Kidd and Nash in particular you could argue Paul to be a more complete player than they. Much as I hate to admit it since he's my favorite player all time, Kidd at his peak was a bad shooter with bad shot selection and Nash couldn't play a lick of defense. Paul doesn't have any gaping hole like that. But as far as the resume goes it is lighter for Paul than either of them.

He has elevated every team he has been on. Look at the Hornets, Clippers, Rockets, OKC, & Suns. They were much better after CP3 got there, and they were worst after he left. Say what you want about CP3, but he elevates his team.

@@TheRealPlanetFaz it's possible, but we can't dwell in hypotheticals. I agree the injuries screwed his chances but even the times he wasn't injured he still came up short. He's a great player don't get me wrong but it's what Skap was saying he's very overrated

@@DarkLordMisa We can't say he's overrated though. He's done what he did. He's still made a big impact. He just never got over the hump of winning a championship. Are we going to say players like Iverson, Barkley, Vince Carter and others were all overrated just because they never won a ring? Of course not. Overrated is someone like Zion Williamson. Kid was supposed to be the next big phenom and dominate the league but he's been pretending to be injured while throwing down 360 windmills and just getting fat and fu*king Moriah Mills. Or Ben Simmons. THAT'S what overrated is.
