I was 4th row and no one was around while the Crowes were singing since they hadn't taken off yet, so I had no one in front of me for the Crowes' performance. Their girlfriends came out into the audience to cheer them on since very few people were seated. Aerosmith was awesome too and packed the huge outdoor arena.

Chad Stern Gonna be honest. I barely remember their performance. However, in our defense,, had we known they were about to blow up, we probably would’ve paid more attention. We prob hung for a couple of tunes. Then after that, went out back to the green room...meaning, our van. (Which I’m sure is exactly what MCG did during our set.Lol!). I sorta remember chatting w/Chris briefly(basically “Hey man. Sup?”) as we loaded out and they loaded in. They were just another band like us. I remember thinking they were yet another “Athens-y band. Musically speaking, they were definitely no where near what they eventually became. Truth be known ..and we would’ve never admitted it back then,...but so many of us Georgia bands were not so secretly, REM wannabes. Those of us that couldn’t find our own voice/style just slowly faded away..

How? Because John has collected different styles and licks from other guitarist? Thats a lame statement with a flimsy argument. If that were the case, almost every guitarist would be put into this category. This same thing was said about a guy named Stevie Ray Vaughan back in the the late 60s, early 70s. SRV never really invented a lick or a playing style or genre of music.. He picked and chose riffs and solo licks he heard from guys like Jimi Hendrix, Albert and Freddie King, T Bone Walker and of course his older brother. Did he make it into his own unique "SRV sound" and song dynamic's? Yeah, but John has done the same exact thing with what he's picked up from other guitarist. Its the nature of music.

I agree that the statement about the licks is more than a bit clumsy. However the statement "Jerry Garcia was one of the most unique artists ever" is 100% true, which can't be said of JM. Also the statement "everything the Jerry stood for and spoke about JM is the antithesis of" is also 100% true. That's all from my perspective, obviously. I sympathise with JM a bit, although like Chris I was never interested in what he does and I find it a bit too opportunistic and mainstream. Still I think he's an outstanding guitarrist in his niche, but bringing SRV as a comparison perhaps not ideal...

Stevie was a musical genius who knew every chord and mode and scale and trick - but he somehow kept it very tasteful while playing his a$$ off. I kind of think that makes him unique, he was so extremely musically literate and very forceful but he had a really specific idea of how he wanted to come across and great focus.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's music theory was close to none. meaning he said himself that he didn't know any music theory and he thought that music theory was very boring he felt it was like math and he fell asleep in math class. But Stevie knew how to play by ear and playing what felt right and that's what matters. he could play so fast but he knew the right notes that had deep feeling and he knew how to reach out and touch people's hearts with the music. John Mayer plays a strat and trying to do what Stevie did but I think John Mayer it's way way over over rated. But yeah Stevie is the man and he is the one who inspired me to pick up a guitar and keep playing through the tough part for most player s , the beginning is hard but of you stick to it and learn some stuff you can go any where with the instrument and take it to the level of Stevie or at least try to. no one can touch Stevie Ray.

He did try to front Phil N Friends, keyword is "try". I caught a few shows of that tour and was not impressed with Chris fronting the band. Hes not a hippie as much as he wants to preach about how he is... keyword there is "preach", hes got a huge ego. If i was his manager I would not be able to handle it. Steve has no problem admitting he also acted very wrong, so if he's handing out sour grapes it's for himself as well. He's stressing that his book isn't THE story, but HIS story, I think that is the least biased you could be. Ever heard the R brothers do some serious self reflection and admit they are wrong? About intelligence; I think the most intelligent thing is to listen to both sides. And yes, I think Steve is smarter than Chris and Rich. Unfortunately, he had to find ways to deal with the brothers' dysfunction, and they call that manipulation. They don't seem to see their own flaws.
