I think it's at least a bit unfair and has to be mentioned that they fired their OC at the end of November because of the state of the offense. A lot of Kenny's "issues" can be written off when considering that George Pickens wasn't running routes more than 10 yards downfield or inside the numbers. It's no secret that the first two games after Canada was fired Pickett and Rudolph threw for 72% and 62% respectively with a downfield air average of 7 yards, an average gain of ~10 yards, and won both games. We haven't seen a ton of Kenny post-Canada and I think people need to be fair to him come August when he is fully healthy.

Bingo, and I saw Rudolf drop a dime on Pickens from his back foot while being hit, he flicked it 30 yds for a big play, never going to happen w Kenny, arm strength is not there. Ben used to do that even in his rookie year, not saying Rudolf is close to that but if you dont have the arm strength and accuracy, you probably wont make it. Starting to look like a bad pick.

The Bradshaw analogy isn't great. Even if we're going to put aside the way football has changed economically, Bradshaw had incredible tools: a massively strong arm and size and mobility that was very underrated. Pickett doesn't have anything about him that's special. And no, I'm not just parroting Simms when I say that. It's true---everything about him is just okay and his pocket presence is very sub-par. The only thing I don't question about Pickett is his commitment and work ethic. But sometimes that's not enough.

@@CCrawford3971 Completely irrelevant to whatblurjose wrote. Bradshaw had all the coveted traits of QBs today. He was big for his time, fast, strong, athletic, had world class arm talent that stacks up to this day, and was tough as a junkyard dog. He's still the Louisiana state record holder in the javelin and remained the best thrower in the USA for like 50 years. He was also a dangerous red zone threat with his running ability and physical power as attested by his 32 career rushing touchdowns. He'd run around you, over you, and through you. There's nothing impressive about Pickett's physical or mental abilities on a football field. He's getting outplayed by Mason Rudolph by a country mile.

No reason to even have to explain that you haven't given up, he is hurt. He last played 12/3, exactly 4 weeks ago, and sustained a pretty bad high ankle sprain. He didn't practice, per Tomlin, until this week. It doesn't seem like he was ever going to play the last couple games, and there is no reason to rush him back for week 18 against the backup Ravens when Rudolph is sufficing.

Agreed. The real rebuild started 5 years ago. Tough time to be QB in Pittsburgh. Plus, people hated Mason because he wasn't Ben. Ben didn't help the situation any either. The Steelers should have never picked Kenny in the 1st round. That started the problem. Plus, the fans treat him like like he's a 21 year old rookie. This rumor was started by a local sports "shock jock" who has a history of stirring the pot by attacking popular Steelers. He is the same guy who put out a false report about TJ Watt skipping his exit interview two season ago even though it was completely false and TJ called him out directly. This shock jock avoids interviewing players at all costs and does not have access to the facility or locker room. This guy holds very little respect among his peers and anything he writes should be ignored. It is a shame that he is still employed, but enough Yinzers love his over the top style that he's very popular amongst them.

While Pickett didn't play great this season, he did look better after Matt Canada was let go. No touchdowns against the Bengals, but he had one of his better depths of target in that game (granted, the Bengals defense has been terrible this season) and also had no turnover-worthy plays. I don't know if he's a franchise QB, and he definitely was a reach pick because I just don't see anything particularly special about him, but I think it's a bit too soon to give up on him as the starter. It'll be worth it for the Steelers to have serious competition at QB this offseason between Pickett and Rudolph.
@donywahlberg

QB School really complimented him that game and the only real issues he had were throw timing/location which all young QBs have to learn. The drop in the endzone that week was behind the WR but he also didn't throw an INT and only has 6 TOs on the year -- one occurring as he got injured IIRC. He has 4 INTs over 12 games, that's not by fluke and it's not the mark of a bad QB. Rudolph is doing well as insurance so Kenny can fully heal.

Simms is as good at commentary as he was a QB (never had a passer rating better than '23 Kenny)...Each QB needed/needs a post-Canada evaluation. Mitch had his chance, Kenny got hurt during the best offensive showing of the year at that point and Mason has shown us something. I agree with letting Mason continue to start, but am not ready to give up on Kenny.

So annoying to constantly suggest the Steelers may go for a player like Wilson or Fields. When have the Steelers went out and got a big name player in FA? I’ve been a fan for 20 years and can’t recall any big names ever signing with the Steelers. They aren’t going to start next year. The starting QB for next year is either already on the team or in the draft.

Theyre starting to do things differently a bit. Ive been fan since 1980 and I see what your saying. However Omar Khan has different approach from Colbert from what ive seen so far. They may have lucked out with Mason if he can do what hes been doing for a whole season. Bcuz Pickett looks like a major miss as 1st rounder.

How quickly they forget Kenny was winning games in spite of Matt Canada. I agree with the notion that we haven’t seen enough from Kenny but he has shown the ability to be clutch and win games that go down to the wire. Not saying he’s the guy and I’m not saying he isn’t but I think they owe it to him to get a quality coordinator who can help him progress you have him atleast 2 more years I would atleast give him the opportunity with a new coordinator to try and show them that he can do this at a high level. If no progress is being made then I think you cut ties with him. Mason has earned to start for now but I agree with Simms Cincy and Seattle not great defenses and while he made some big throws others around him have steeped their games up most notably the offense line and the running game along with Pickens actually locking in. It’ll be interesting to see what they decide to do this off-season.

Kenny got really unlucky with the way everything shook out. Heres a guy who led his team to a 7-4 record, firmly in the playoff picture, with one of the worst offensive coordinators the league has ever seen. The OC gets fired, kenny gets (1)! game without the OC, throws for 300 yards and the offense looks completely different, just for kenny to get hurt. Then he watches as 3 weeks in a row mitch trubisky pisses away the steelers playoff chances against horrifically bad teams, playing so bad in the process that the steelers turn to the emergency 3 mason rudolph. Mason picks up where kenny left off, and does just well enough to justify staying as the starter once kenny is finally healthy enough to return. I just feel so bad for kenny because he was a big part in getting the team to where they are at, but now if the steelers make the playoffs mason rudolph gets all the credit for “saving” a season that wasn’t even close to lost with kenny at the helm. Mitch trubisky really screwed kenny over and an unfortunately timed injury might prevent kenny from ever proving what he could do as a starter without the worst OC in the league holding him back. Just like mason has seized this opportunity to get football justice for himself, I hope kenny gets the chance to do the same. Not even big ben could find success under matt canada and it sucks that kenny only had 1 game without him under an interim OC and it was still the best game of his career.

Fully on board with Simms reaction to the reporting about Kenny's potential outburst. Not buying it! Fact is he has been injured. If he comes back and loses the job next season or fucks up a playoff run go ahead and have a field day about him earning the job or not. But the fact stands he has been injured coming off surgery that happened 4 weeks ago TODAY, so it's pretty ridiculous to act like he played his way out of the job.

As a Steeler fan, the fans are being delusional. Canada was fired and that was the issue. Pickett had his best game after he was fired. This is classic the third string guy is suddenly great and some kind of overlooked talent thing every losing team does. The "fans" all wanted Duck Hodges too and wanted Mason benched. They are being short sighted and frankly like Cleveland fans. You do not dump a guy who is a winning QB because he is not having some kind of hall of fame numbers in a year where all QB's numbers are down. And he is on a rookie deal. Mason is gone after this season. So you are doing the Cleveland Baker Mayfield thing all over again dumping a good guy to look for the amazing guy. You way overpay. That always leads to failure.

Let me ask you a question Mike and Chris? At what point are you going to acknowledge that the Steelers don't operate like other teams? They slow walk their players a lot of times to be fixtures. Regardless of where they were drafted. Regardless if they had been starters or not. Both Rudolph and Kenny are their guys. Mason could very well end up starting next year. If that happens Kenny will still be on this team. I think the more realistic view is Rudolph will be 2nd string and Kenny will be starting next year. All you are seeing is a replay of Earl Morrall and Bob Greise. Thats all this is. The players are not going to take sides in this unless it becomes way obvious one way or the other. Matt Canada hurt Kenny's progression. Kenny was also being made to run plays that he himself didnt feel suited for and that changed when Sullivan took over.

The problem with Pickett is he plays scared in the pocket. He's not built for the NFL. He has the arm talent but he escapes the pocket to early to avoid getting hit. Its not about talent. I've seen him make great throws. He is his own worse enemy. He is more of a backup like Charlie Batch was for the Steelers. The same issue with Batch, he just wasn't tough enough to be a full time starter.
