Just found out he passed in 2015 a minute ago...what a wonderful bass player--legend...totally blew the lid off rock bass playing. If you don't know what a melodic bass player is, look at this guy for zero point two seconds...

I've known for decades that Steve Howe in Yes was voted best guitarist in Guitar player five years in a row but only recently learned that Chris was voted best bass player in Melody maker just as long. To leave any of the two off a top ten list is hilarious.

That's even more touching considering how rough things got between Jon and Chris after the breakup. I was glad to hear they were able to patch things up before Chris moved on.

Red Hat PhD , Jon is taking about the writing process, he and Chris wrote many of the incredible "musical mountains" that YES recorded and performed, he was not just a singer.

In all honesty, I'v never heard somebody play in a similar manner. I wonder who his influences were ?

As a Rush fan since my teenage years (1974!) I was devastated to meet Geddy last year at Brasserie restaurant in St. Louis...whatanass he was! I'd trade the return of Chris Squire for Geddy's departure any day.

@@PepeLuguillo I won't take sides, but it's neat to study how Bruford played great high tom/cymbal to get over Squire (who tended to live in higher registers) and gave those tracks a delicate, jazzy feel, while White (thanks to advances in amplification) could thunder below him and shake the seats. Nice that we got both approaches. Also why I love Tony Kaye for realizing the rhythm section isn't playing straight rhythm, so the keys probably should be filling that role.

have you watched the rig rundown for Chris & Steve Howe? Coolest info for me was describing using both pickups individually, going to two amps. He used both jacks on the bass, one cord went to one amp and the other cord went to a different amp.

Hadn't seen it before, but just watched it. Thanks for the heads-up. Quite an array of interesting basses shown off there. I like that after all this time, he still used the original Rickenbacker from '64, and that he was inspired in his sound, by Jon Entwistle(the Who Live at Leeds has some of the chunkiest, aggressive bass I've ever heard). Anyway, thanks for the tip. Now I'm off down Memory Lane again. ;)

I've noticed Everytime I watch a music video by a virtuoso and there are negative comments but silly ones. Not genuine critical assessments, just saying someone sucks or kids at guitar center play better. Those kind of comments. Without exception it is always a novice musician who has played a few months or couple years and think they know all of music and what is "good" and what "sucks". It's not like on KZfaq where you have an amazing brilliant Musician like Richie Blackmore talking and bashing all of his contemporaries. Yeah, no.. It's some guy who is a terrible guitar player but has some odd delusions. Whether to make them feel better about their playing. Or whatever the reason. It used to bother me. And I've had upwards of a thousand arguments on here over the years. I don't do it anymore. It's a waste. And I am a musician. Do you know out of every single time I argued and said they must be an awful musician trying to make themselves feel adequate. And to upload a little clip of them playing right here. I'll say it's easy. There are dozens of apps where u can literally record this very second and then instantly upload it. I can do it. Anyone can. Do you know no matter what I say or ask or push or press. Not one single person has ever. I can fucking shred on a guitar. If someone said that about me and I could prove them wrong, I would literally just record a ten second thing and reply it. There is not one actual reason not to. And they never have. Cause I'm right. They are just awful musicians. That's it. No exception. Ever

b norwood I wouldn’t click “thumbs down”. But if I’m being honest, this wasn’t a very ‘musical’ solo. It didn’t explore very much melodic or harmonic territory and there wasn’t much interplay between the soloist and other musicians. Is there a better example of a Chris squire solo you could recommend ?
