We invited Chris Thile over to the shop for a mandolin-tasting after the incredible Nickel Creek shows at the Ryman Auditorium. It was an incredible afternoon, to say the least! In this video, Chris starts off with the Virzi-equipped Loar and transitions to the non-Virzi sibling, giving his impressions of each. Both instruments are from the February 18th, 1924 batch (along with both of Thile's, Mike Marshall's, John Paul Jones's, and John Reischmann's). Both are currently available at Carter Vintage, give us a call or email for more information! Many thanks to Chris for stopping by!

4:48!!! Oh man after that tasty lick the greatness that keeps me coming back to this video is seeing his deeply blown away and satisfied expression at what this instrument plus his skills are able to create.

He is right when he speaks of the delicate sound of the mandolin and why you would be drawn to that. That aspect of the instrument seems a bit lost with a lot of players today. They want the bark.

I like the Virzi Loar better for tone! Mine has the Virzi and its awesome, very refined and elegant sounding.

Give him a shoebox and a dental floss string and he'd sound better ;) lol. Not that you're bad of course, but he's just that good lol.

I came here to compare tone - because I bought a 50 dollar Harmony mando from 1954, an exact copy of the f-hole Gibson's, which because of the wood quality is louder and more powerful than the real thing. These have a more refined sound, but the magic combo of Adirondack Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, can not be beaten (ask the Martin CEO). These were considered cheaper woods at the time, but are way superior, now.

They take the low end and big volume mandos, because they cut through.

Are these Loar mandolins by Gibson, or a brand of their own?
@gordonanderson3111
@gordonanderson3111 3 жыл бұрын
They are Gibson. Loyd Loar left Gibson around 1925, not on good terms, to start his own company making electric guitars and 10 string mandolins - which were great but about 20 years too far ahead of their time.

Cool video, but is that couch vinyl? I had a really bad experience with a vinyl strap and a thin nitro finish... now I am getting it buffed out, yuck. Amazing instruments indeed.
