This video answers the question: Can I compare the Chris Watts murder case to what we know about familicide I think what happens a lot of times when this case is analyzed, is that it's analyzed without context. We actually have a lot of information available in the literature about familicide and yet you'll see kind of a narrowing in on this case without considering that larger context. Sometimes in research and just in trying to gain knowledge in general we have to step back from something to get a clear view of it.
The types of familicide:
Immortality
- murders committed in an attempt to immortalize the family
- perpetrator “protects” the family, believing that death is better than poverty.
need for control
- perpetrator commits the final act of control by killing the entire family
- perpetrator views the family as a singular unit and does not differentiate between individuals,
Suicide
- perpetrator kills the spouse and children because he believes they are unable to go on
without their head of household
- perpetrator is also driven by a desire to protect the family from the shame of having a parent commit suicide
Revenge
- tied to sexual jealousy
- perpetrator believes the spouse or ex-spouse has been unfaithful
- children are seen equally responsible for any betrayal

He'd been living the life of a single man for a number of weeks, spending time with his girlfriend as if he was young, free and single and he loved it. Shanann returned and he bitterly resented her and hated the life he had with her. Shanann and the children were obstacles to his happiness. His girlfriend was pressuring him to leave his wife and get a place of his own and he feared he would lose her if he didn't do as she wished. - but he couldn't afford a place of his own because he was in debt. He had fallen out with his parents because they didn't like Shanann. There was pressure on him from every angle. He killed his family to be with his girlfriend and he thought he could tell people they had 'vanished' and that would be the end of it. I think the affair was the catalyst for the murders.

I so agree. It's really not all the complicated, IMO. He had lived the "single" bachelor life that summer and was able to put his family out of his head. NK's passive aggressive control of CW kept him emotionally attached to the "pretend" life he was building with her. The pregnancy didn't seem real to him either. When she left for North Carolina, she likely wasn't "showing", so he could keep his secret life under control. He had also lied to NK about separating and was on borrowed time leading up to him traveling to NC to see the family. When he saw the girls and Shannan at the airport, he clearly saw how pregnant she was, the girls clinging to him, reminding him he was indeed a father, and his wife's open arms and obvious desire to reconnect spelled doom for these innocent victims. Perhaps he figured by being a jerk to Shannan, not attend to her needs, be cold and unloving, it would drive Shannan away. Why he could not come clean while he was back there...giving her a support system with her family and the protection of his own parents in dealing with his failure as a husband and father and simply moving on with his life? Instead, he returns to Colorado with a horrific plan to rid himself of the baggage that is keeping him from NK's arms. Jim showing up and NK admitting she had gone on some dating sites also entered into his thinking as he feared she wouldn't accept being 2nd place to his wife and children.. She said as much. Simply put, they had to go. CW' psychopathic brain didn't register what the consequences would be or if his reasoning was even slightly believable. Likely, he was thinking about the 3 some that NK had mentioned and was afraid that Jim might take his place. At the end of the day, it's all about his selfish lustful desires. He killed his family because of sex...the once geeky, overweight, nerdy unpopular guy had a hot girl that liked. him. Like Shannan said, he had NO game. He still doesn't. That's why he confessed so easily and is sitting in prison for the next 50 years. He'll probably do just fun behind bars. He's a dolt!

It certainly seems like the affair could be the catalyst for the murders, but his mother had been pressuring him to leave Shan'ann before they were even married. His lack of "object permanence," a characteristic of psychopaths, (google object permanance psychopath) would have had a major impact on his mentality with the family gone for 5 weeks. He even talks about it in his 2019 interview. He showed a disconnect when he went back to NC, which could also be caused by just the affair, I'm not sure, but then when the girls all came back to CO, he could very well have felt, "who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing here?" Psychopaths think of other people as little more than paper dolls in the psychopaths mind anyway, so murdering them and stuffing the girls in oil tanks would not be a big leap for him mentally. If that was his mentality, the girlfriend would be a tool or "moral support" more than a catalyst. Then back in NC, his (imo) evil mother enacted a scene which was a thinly veiled go-ahead for him. I think the mistress was a major factor, but the mother was at least one catalyst for the murders
@golfergal
@golfergal 5 жыл бұрын
yes, the mother was a factor to his overall "decisions" last August. From what I've read, he turned his back on his mom and dad, sister when he met Shannan. His controlling mother didn't know what hit her when Chris so easily chose Shannan over his own family. For Cindi and Ron, this was all Shannan's fault, but IMO, Chris is the one at fault. Imagine if at the time of the wedding and all the issues with the in-laws Chris set boundaries and took charge of the situation. Instead, he ran away with Shannan and allowed resentment and hurt feelings to fester. Shannan's parents, OTOH, showed true class, unconditional love, and tolerance for the behaviors on the Watts side. I truly don't think I could be so forgiving.

I remember being especially struck by the only time released footage showed the bastard genuinely weeping. It was when an officer threatened to have Watts’ coworkers go dig in the oil for his family. And Watts was just panicked, saying something akin to “No! they’ll think I’m just this big loser!” The very thought of being spoken ill of was so damaging to his ego, he finally shed tears...for his pride.

I think there should be a whole different category called the "Fresh Start" motive. Where the perpetrator wants a whole new life without having to be financially responsible for his family. The justice system in the Scott Peterson and the Chris Watts murders were this type I think. In both these cases the situation was triggered or influenced by a new attraction.

Charles Stuart in 1989 Boston fits this, too. He was pissed his wife got pregnant and he didn't want a kid, but tried to play along while setting up a situation to get her killed. Police found out he was trying to get cozy with a co-worker at his job and figured that was part of the motive. That case is still terrible to think about because of all the lives he began to ruin with his lies that led to a lot of racist fearmongering, not to mention a trusting wife and child gone. Susan Smith, also, getting rid of her kids so she had a better chance with a new man who she knew didn't want kids. Figured she'd get a better life with him than she would keeping her kids.

There may need to be a new category. Man gets side girl. Side girl wants marriage & no ready made family. Man decides familicide is the answer to everything and he walks off into the sunset with side girl turned wife. Instead, hopefully, prison is in the cards. Or better yet, we can learn warning signs and try in some way to prevent this tragedy from occurring.

I cannot wrap my mind around someone thinking murder was the answer. My daughter was killed by her ex, who then killed himself. Thankfully he did not physically hurt their kids although they were out in his car strapped in their car seats waiting for him to take them to the park. He had been physically abusive and she had left him. In weeks leading up to the event, he had been diagnosed with depression, ptsd, and anxiety, and had previously had an addiction to opioids. I had witnessed his anger many times and after this happened learned that he had anger issues since he was a teen. He was a very controlling person, a horrible employment history, often seemed withdrawn and unhappy to me. I wish my daughter had realized how dangerous he was, we had only just started talking again. Their kids were 3 and 5 at the time this happened. I am so thankful they are alive..the Watts case made me realize it could have been all of them.

I've read comments posted on many channels that discuss this case. A great number of people are placing most of the blame at his mistress rather than him. I find that disturbing. They call her the 'puppet master' and possibly an accomplice. I find it very, very difficult to point a finger at anyone but Chris and a major reason for that is that she was never charged with any involvement whatsoever. The police have all her texts, phone logs, etc and if they don't deem she was involved, it should be case closed. I don't understand why so many people seem to sympathize with Chris and demonize his mistress. It's as if they don't want to hold him accountable or that he is so childlike and easily manipulated, that he'd kill his family on her order or by her influence. Of course she wanted him to leave his wife. That's the fantasy a mistress holds on to, but that doesn't mean she wanted or encouraged him to murder his wife or his children.

There seem to be thousands of people, mainly but not all, women who "deeply feel" that Nichol was guilty, physically involved, manipulated him a la Charles Manson, with no evidence whatsoever. They just know, feel, believe, etc. and that's all the evidence they need. At first I just read them not wanting to get involved, then I started posting that they had no evidence and the FBI is capable of finding all the texts on his and her phones, etc., then gave up and don't ever go near those channels anymore. It's not that I lost arguments, more that the volume of posts was way, way too much to even think of arguing with. All of them with their eyes bugged out, breathlessly going on about photos on her phone etc. Their agenda seems to be projecting paranoia about their own husbands, not even remotely about analyzing actual evidence.

The reality is that Chris Watts would never have murdered his wife if he had never met Nicole. That's a fact even the prosecutors and investigators cede, in addition to Chris himself. Nicole was stalking shannan the year before her and Chris were even talking. Her browser history shows her investigating Chris's well, studying his likes and dislikes, so that she could portray the type of woman that she thought Chris wanted. In her browser history she at times spent hours upon hours Googling shanann and looking at Shannon's Facebook page. After Chris murdered his wife, her Google searches included how to permanently delete text messages. How long after you text someone, can police retrieve the records from the phone company. How much money did Amber Frey make off of her book deal after Scott Peterson murdered his pregnant wife. 4 days after her and Chris started the sexual relationship she actually showed up at the watts House demanding that she "not be second to Chris Watts wife". In addition to this Chris Watts freely admits, as Nicole eventually did, that she knew full well that he was married the entire time. As evidenced by her Google search, the man I'm dating says he will leave his wife for me. And, do men leave their families for their mistress? An interesting detail on this. Nicole kessinger father walked out on his family for his mistress. So in her mind this was replaying an old tape. She watched her mother do all the right things, and still had the father leave for another woman. She had reason to believe that Chris would leave his family, and possibly she believed that this was a more stable relationship. She also knew that shanann was pregnant as evidenced by her Google searches that shows she was searching Chris's Facebook page and shanann Facebook page daily. The day that shanann posted the oops we did it again video showing she was pregnant, Nicole sent Chris a text message stating. Thanks for being honest with me Chris, obviously a sarcastic dig. She clearly manipulated him. This woman was controlling every single calorie and macro nutrient that was going into his body. She also stated several times through text messages and in-person, that her and Chris had no first. And that she wanted to be able to give him his first born son. This is after she knew that shanann was pregnant with a son. Not to be cynical, but how exactly did she expect that to happen without either the baby shannan and dying? Nicole kessinger lied several times throughout the interview, at first I attributed this to her shame at participating in what was obviously an affair with a married man with a pregnant wife. But after delving deeper into her Google search history, and seeing how often she was stalking shanann Watts, even more so than Chris Watts, I've come to a different conclusion. While I don't know if she was there when they were murdered, or even if she directly said kill your wife. I do know that she continued to pressure Chris that he needed to "fix this situation, or she was going to leave him". She knew that he was easily controlled. One interesting part of an interview is where Chris Watts says how Nicole let him pick places to go on dates, and shanann made all the decisions. But if you look back at Nicole kessinger interview, she clearly makes a point to state that she chose everywhere they went, and Chris was just happy to go along with it. The difference between Shannon and Nicole is that Nicole was more manipulative and covert, where shanaan was a very straightforward type of pushy. Chris never was his own man, Nicole just did a better job of convincing him that what she wanted was also what he wanted. She accomplish this by studying him on Facebook, studying his wife and family, and then formulating a personality that she thought he would like. A good guy friend of mine one time told me, the way to find the type of guy that you want, it's to think of what type of woman that guy would want. Then you become that type of woman. Nichol kessinger was Googling shanann and Chris Watts from the first week they started working together, which was a a year before they even started talking. She chased Chris, Chris knowledges this, and the Google searches messages confirm it. I'm not a conspiracy theory type of person usually, but after watching the interview with Nicole, and that prompted me to do more and more research, I've come to the opinion that she was way more involved. The final straw was really listening to Chris Watts interviews, this is not a highly articulate or intelligent man. He's very shallow in his affect and thought process. I find it hard to believe that he would think up all of this on his own. We know it was premeditated because he admitted to suffocating the girls before shanann got home, and while he was suffocating shannan they both woke back up. This is written in his own hand. Which would explain some of the additional bruising and Trauma to the face of the girls. In addition he also called his co-workers the night before to let them know he would be out on that oil site that he wasn't supposed to be on, earlier in the morning. He specifically told him that he didn't need any help. In addition to this, throughout their affair Chris had been using a prepaid Anadarko card when with Nicole kessinger. The night before the murder he used his and his wife shared credit card. Why would he do that? Because he knew that she wouldn't be alive to see it or react to it. This was 100% premeditated, and at this point even Chris admits to as much. He just wanted to be with Nicole kessinger, and she was pressuring him to leave his wife, shannan was pressuring him to stay, Financial stressors were mounting , and his parents were stressing him as well. He's always been a follower, at this point he just chose to follow Nicole kessinger. I don't doubt for a second if Shannon had told Chris to murder someone during the first few years of their courtship, that he would have done it. None of this makes them any less culpable. He can be 100% responsible for his actions, but that does not mean that Nicole kessinger is not responsible for her actions. Her police interview is one of the weirdest most cringyt things I've ever watched. Every time she was talking to the male officer her voice goes up 30 octaves and she talks baby talk. This is clearly a practiced manipulator. On his own Chris never would have murdered shannan, he states that he was happy in his marriage and content until he found Nicole kessinger. She's definitely the Catalyst, if not a co-conspirator.

Actually her comments make more sense than that of Dr. Grande. - She also goes into detail how the off(and self harming) behavior of Chris Watts during the voluntary ! police interviews show his covert narcissism, and how he felt compelled to behave in a certain way even though it was the stupidest thing he could do. His need to maintain the image of the nice guy was so dominant that he dug his own grave (for instance sitting through the interviews and also not getting a lawyer, and doing the polygraph). A smart murderer would not have allowed the wellness check on Aug 13 in his house (at 2 pm). O.K. the friend of his wife was a force of nature. And at the same time he did not even realize how much he harmed himself. He fell back on his "scripts of how-to-imitate-a-dcent-person" in a high stress situation, and he was unable to realize how fake he appeared to a normal human being (with the ability to have emotions and to assess the emotional state of others). It didn't compute that it was not enough to _say_ to the interrogators, that he loved his children, and would never harm them, it needed to be said in the right way. And moreover an innocent man would not sit through hours and hours of voluntary interviews (with the overarching goal to be seen as cooperative, nice guy), at some point an innocent man would leave and organize the search troops. A frantic father and husband would not be worried about appearing polite, and he might scold police / FBI for wasting their time and his, when they should look for his family. He also did not figure out that it would be a good idea to ask police for news on the two occasions when they contacted him for information (like the size of the kids or what they wore - for the missing info). The cop that called was struck by the absence of frantic - or any - requests during that 5 minute phone conversation. They are likely used to other behavior if small children and a mother are inexplicably missing. Car in the garage, her phone there (it was her lifeline, she did her biz online, the friend was a work collegue and she knew it was bad when she found the _phone_ and the medication they needed. For the mother (she had lupus) and the children. The purse, the phone, the car at home. If she had the smallest daughter with her, she did not leave the house without the epi pen for CC the youngest daughter who had severe allergies, and the "doting father" should have known that little detail. And the shoes she liked to wear when she was casual. When he left to dispose off the bodies he did not figure out that it would be a good idea to take these small items (and the soiled linen sheet he threw into the trash) to make it more plausible that his wife had left the house in a normal manner and maybe was abducted later. And he did not have time to improve, he left the house with the bodies and when he returned 6 - 7 hours later, police and witnesses were there. He is like one of the aliens in the movies that try to impersonate a feeling human and they _almost_ pull it off. He had no program for a situation that was not normal and where he could not mimic a person he had watched before (because it had not happened before). So he malfunctioned badly. At work he was the go-to guy for problems, and known for his good memory (wells, pressure, etc.). Maybe he deluded himself that he was intelligent (he mentioned his good memory and that they called him Rainmain at work during the polygraph). But in the contacts with police he was really stupid (which was lucky for society).

I was struck by how Shannan's friend and the neighbour were immediately suspicious as soon as Shannan and the child were found to be missing. Normally a murder of a mother and her children would be so bizarre an idea that you wouldn't entertain it, so I think Watts had come across as disturbing/uncomfortable/dodgy for some time. There was no "oh, I bet she just popped to the shops" or "met a friend". The belief that she was dead or in danger was instant. Specifically danger from Chris. In fact I wondered if the neighbour's suspicion of Chris could be evidence of domestic abuse: that he had seen or heard things that troubled him but he had never been quite sure. Shannan was a woman who could have fiercely hidden it, because of her business on social media. With Watts, he is a very quiet man, probably never talked about his feelings, didn't experience empathy and his silence hid his true nature. I think he hated his wife and children. Really hated them and being tied to them. He resented their existence. So in footage where he is playing with the children, inside his secret mind he could have been thinking how much he hates them, thinking about killing them. I think the nature of the murders was something he had been fantasising about for a long time. Weeks. Maybe months. His emotional masking can be seen in his reaction when Shannan tells him she is pregnant with her third baby. There is no way he was pleased with that news but you can't see it at all. He looks quiet but loving and happy. I'm not sure, from footage, if he ever saw his wife and children as human. In no footage does he actually make any emotional connection or show any humanity to them. Poor Shannan was living with a time bomb that hid his hatred of her. Though she started to sense it eventually. He is an example of the saying "sometimes the quiet ones are the worst".

Shannan as a manipulative overbearing wife who shared her and her children’s lives incessantly on social media. She was involved in a pyramid scheme business (Thrive) as well. She looked like a clown (literally) with her poorly applied makeup. I can see how Chris would be attracted to Nicole. He traded one life sentence for another. I’m almost certain that all of her female devotees are pretty much like her. My ex was which is why I left her and she is now bitter and alone. I, on the other hand, am living a happy stress free life with a younger prettier girl who is supportive and brings joy to me everyday. The exact opposite of the soul sucking marriage with the woman I escaped from.

The "Immortality" type of family annihilator makes me think of John List. He's only unusual in that his children were teenagers when he killed them, and he also murdered his mother (I guess because she was there) as well as his wife. He left them, and the opulent mansion he couldn't afford, laid out beautifully like a memory preserved in amber, for police to find after he was long gone.

There’s so much about this case that’s seemingly unexplainable. When you went through the types of familicide, I agree, none of them seem to fit this case. My first thought in cases like this is always “but why the children”, and you mentioned this, Dr Grande. The killing of anyone is abhorrent, but the killing of innocent children is particularly one of the most horrific acts to try and understand. Thank you very much for an excellent viewpoint on familicide, but I doubt I’ll ever understand the actual act itself. Happy Day to you, Dr Grande ☺️

Yours is an old comment. But if you're still curious I figure it was mainly to please his hypergamus GF who wanted to start a new life with him, with no baggage attached, and while having his monetary situation intact (a divorce would have financially wiped him out). Usually, in such cases, the guy just abandons the family and goes off with his new GF. However, his GF must have been more demanding then most women and he didn't want to loose her. The reason why he was "capable" of killing the kids was like the lion that kills the pups in order to start a new brood. A switch flipped in his head, from father to killer, like a soldier in combat then having no empathy for the enemy.

It's stunning, and frightening to hear that the "affair" had begun only 5 or 6 weeks before. It's hard to believe such heinous actions could come from such a short lived experience. Surely such murders would only occur after years of extramarital relations? I wonder if it means he was ready to kill them all and just needed a slight incentive? That he was intrinsically homicidal and could have "gone off" at any time? It's also interesting to me that this was the time Shanann had been away with the girls. I'm now a little more willing to believe Kessinger did target him, and pursued him. Not that I'm excusing his behaviour. It infuriates me when people blame the "third party" in cases like this, or indeed at anytime unfaithfulness becomes known.
@susansmith4784
@susansmith4784 9 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same, maybe the opportunity was there with Shanann and the children away for him to 'feel single' again and like it, and Kessinger saw that opportunity. Maybe Kessinger was the catalyst - giving him the confidence and 'reason' to 'act' on how unhappy he was with an unhappy marriage, with demanding young children and with serious debts. IF Shanann hadn't gone away for so long he wouldn't have had any opportunity for an affair ... IF only he had just walked away and divorced her ...😢

Why doesn't anyone talk about these types of men ( particularly fathers or husbands ) who lived together expecting to get away with it? They commit the horrible act and rush to dispose of the victims, and lie through their teeth saying later they don't know why their loved ones are "missing." Some to this day, even when convicted, play stupid and refuse to admit they are responsible and to blame etc. So many families are ripped off not knowing where their family members are, or what happened to them.😢 It's heinous and brutally cruel behavior long after the shock and hurt of losing someone you love gets processed, if ever. Emotional damages should be an extra charge added. Imo 🙏🙏🙏

It was about a different sort of control. He had no control over his relationship with his wife - she dominated, he couldn’t communicate his perspective. Or maybe he lost his stronger position in the relationship. In the beginning he was the one that "saved" Shannan (her own words). And "daddy was a hero". She was sick and vulnerable. But her Lupus, her self esteem and career improved. He got two kids, a third child on the way and they were in a bad financial situation. So his strong position declined and he became a follower again because he felt stuck. Then he met NK and his ego was strong again. He felt wanted and was nr. 1 again. He wanted to start over but couldn't affort it. So he killed them all.

The one thing that strucks me here (beside the obvious) is how seemingly untouched by this tragedy Chris’s parents have been. I know that everyone behaves differently face to face with such a tragedy, but when I imagine really loving grandparents... - really loving grandparents would be completely devastated. These were their precious grandchildren and they are... somehow unconcerned... I am able to feel empathy towards what they have to go through with their son, BUT I would expect them to be devastated, not somehow apologizing their son’s behavior AND trying to blame the victim(s) on top of that. I don’t think they - as parents - have had the needed emotional “equipment” to raise an emotionally “normal” child... I am not saying this made him into a cold blooded murderer, but I don’t think he was capable of real feelings - as his parents are not either from what I have seen.

I wonder about their emotional ability beyond immediate family to them. They could be desperate to cling to whatever is left of their family (even if said family member is the REASON the rest of the family is gone). It's always baffling. I don't remember their names, but there was a case on ID of teen twins (15 or 16 at the time) who were manipulative and getting more defiant, and the whole extended family knew. The girls got fed up with living under their mom's rules and stabbed her to death, then went off to school like nothing happened. Their grandmother forgave them and helped them and supported them while they were in prison, even though they were completely responsible for HER OWN DAUGHTER's death (can't recall if they ever expressed remorse, but they weren't interviewed, either). That case made me cringe so badly because it's like "why would you defend and even hug the people who took your daughter out of this world so violently, whether they're your grandkids or not?" I can't wrap my mind around that, but some parents or grandparents can.

His mother is particularly odious. I'm also the mother of an adult son and I have no doubt if (God forbid) he were to suddenly do something like this, I would be devastated and overwrought and desperate to find some way of explaining it to myself, especially if he had "snapped" ( though that is hugely problematic too). But she has clearly always been absolutely twisted and unsupportive eg not even going to their wedding, and things reportedly said about the girls re Nutgate. I'd love Dr Grande to analyse HER! However, in my opinion he had no common sense. Almost antisocial, just the guy in the background. I'm no psychologist, just my opinion. I really believe that it was very easy for him to discard his family. I also think he is a coward and I can't believe the amount of women that are fans of his. What do they see in him. I dont think being murdered is something to worry about considering your chance of being murdered in a year is somewhere around 14,000 to 1. You can increase your likliehood by getting involved with someone with abandonment or control/anger issues. What you never want to do is send mixed messagea and have the relationship become intimate and then have them shut out and isolated. When its over make sure you are clear and dont belittle the person or confuse them giving them false hope. You can say you still love them but you know it wont work and you dont WANT it to and that its OVER. If you're clear, give them an out where they can keep their self esteem, you're always going to be much safer. Some people create pressure cooker, yo-yo situations that make people crazy about what you want and can get very volatile. This is always dangerous. Be clear, don't deceive and dont confuse. I think if you do that your chance of being murdered will go down to almost zero.

I didn't mean to sound anti-male. So thank you for pointing out how my comment may be impacting readers. I am only noting that science has confirmed the gender bias of family violence- men/husbands kill at higher rates than women/wives do their children or husbands. Children kill their parents at an even less rate than mothers/wives to husbands and children. Women certainly do kill family members. Munchausen by proxy is almost exclusively a female occurrence for example. So when police suspect the spouse who is still living or not missing, it is for good statistical reason.

Have you seen any of her videos? I hate to speak ill of the dead, but she was a nut cutter, just like Nurse Ratched from ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’s NEST… she treated him like a kid (his wife, idk about his mom). No reason to get murdered, but enough to push your husband away. She even admitted it, in one of her last videos… and the way she acted toward his mom, when she bought the wrong ice cream… I mean, why did they move so far away from the parents? Just saying, murder victims can be as flawed as any of us. RIP to her, though.

@@tysparks598 They guy is a murderer. You can only imagine the issues he had himself. Normal people don't murder their family under ANY circumstances. If I had issues with my wife, we would work it out or get a divorce and that would be that. Broken relationships and bad communication is common but to say the relationship went bad because of specifically her is misguided. I mean like I said, you can't be a normal person and kill your entire family. You absolutely have to have issues built from early on in life. These issues he had probably contributed to a bad relationship as well. He is no victim in the relationship. Most relationships fail because of communication and it isn't like he was any better at it. The fact that she didn't see the red flags or that she stayed with him all these years and they continued to have children shows she probably also had issues herself but that is completely besides the point. But as this person stated, Chris' mom was controlling, it makes sense he was attracted to someone also controlling. Pushing someone away in a relationship is one thing (and also incredibly common) murdering your family because of the fact is something insane. When you make comments as you did it makes it seem like you are making excuses for how he felt as if it was justified. There is no justification for it. If you are having issues in your relationship you either work it out or get a divorce... he chose cheating and murder.

@@beaubreau you are spot on in regards to seeking out relationships similar to what people have experienced before. We see it often in people who have a string of bad relationships for an example, women who continue to date abusers because they were abused in childhood. Often it is subconscious. We. End up seeking out what is familiar to us. Some would say comfortable even though abuse is never comfortable. In that example they often think If I’m good enough he will stop and see that I love him. It took me years of counseling to realize my pattern and why I continued to be in the type of relationships I never wanted to have. Of course a barrage people do not kill their families as you mentioned. I’m glad you spoke up about even the slightest case of victim blaming. We are far to much of that. The general population of people have done that for far too long. In my experience that conditioning makes it very hard for victim to A) report a crime and B) to receive justice. We even see it in our police departments across the country. Most crimes come down to he said she said unless someone ends up dead or it is blatantly obvious who the victim was and there was no “reason” for the crime. I was told that because their was no witness to my sexual assault and the animal that assaulted me for over 8 hours stated we had been in a relationship there was nothing they could do. That was with DNA, no evidence that we had any type of relationship, drugs in my system that he slipped me and obvious other trauma. It was dismissed due to the previous reasons I mentioned and because he said I liked it rough. It seemed absurd to me as it would most people but that’s the facts of the world we live in. Now he is free to do it to another innocent victim except now he is smarter because of the things he learned with me coming forward. Next time he most likely will do it to someone who doesn’t even know him in passing. Some poor victim is going to wake up having no idea what happened to her or who did it. Unfortunately I know several women who have experienced similar circumstances with their cases stopping before they start due to victim blaming. I’m always surprised when another woman blames a female victim. It’s despicable in my opinion. Everyone thinks they are a sleuth and they make judgements without the facts. I will never understand why anyone would blame any victim for being abused, raped or murdered.

The environment alone can not be a factor simply because there are many people grown in toxic environments who grow up to be healthy people. I personally say it is at most 30% environment and at least 70% personal will. Just close your eyes and imagine if there is any environment in the whole world that can make you kill your own family. Sherry Thompson There were definitely changes. CW did a complete 180. He told Shanann he didn’t want the baby when it was his idea to have another child in the first place. He told her they weren’t compatible anymore. He sent her a photo with a doll with a sheet covering it like a sheet on a dead body at the morgue on the couch. He stopped sleeping with her and being interested in sex. So there were plenty of signs that something was amiss. But the point is would the average woman just pack up and leave or if you were in Shanann’s shoes and in love with your husband and pregnant, would you stay and try to work on things. After all, he wasn’t being honest and telling her he was having an affair with NK. I think most women would stay & fight for their marriage if they were in Shanann’s shoes. Its just a tragic case. As a result there is some speculation the children were already dead before Shanann arrived home. I think what happened was the early morning she came home from the work trip, he told her he wanted a divorce and she may have threatened him that he would never see the kids again. So maybe that’s when he snapped and did what he did. Or because he has been such a liar the whole time like leading Shanann on and denying any affair and also lying to Nicole Kessinger that he was already separated, he maybe did plan this. They were already in a financial bind and everyone knows divorce and child support is expensive. The fact that he thought he could actually get away with this heinous murder is what solidifies to me he seems like a true narcissist. It’s too bad he didn’t just start and end with himself. I have necer heard the term familicide before, but you actually described part of my devestating past! On Mother's Day, May 10, 1992, around 11:20 p.m. my Sister's EX-Boyfriend walked into my parents home and shot and killed my Father, my Mother, my 27 year old Brother and 'HIS" and my Sister's 18 month old Daughter. My Brother was shot twice and stabbed 8 times with a large hunting knife, but he fought with him and saved his girlfriend's and my Sister's 10 year old Daughter's life before he died. Once he realized the cop's were coming, he went into my parents bedroom and shot and killed himself... We later learned that he had written down a hit list with all of our Families names in it. He intended to kill everyone and wait for my sister to come home to see ALL our Family dead, so he could tell her that it was all her fault and then to kill himself in front of her. They had dated 5 years, he was well liked by alnost tge entire community, he worked 2 jobs, he had money, he was remodeling his home, he had a nice truck, motorcycle, mobile home plus he was a great dad that went to church every Sunday? The only motive we could come up with was my Sister had broke up with him the day before....

I agree that the affair was the driving force behind the murders. CW, in his way, communicated effectively to SW that he was no longer in love with her and didn't want the unborn child, at the same time NK was seeking out other relationships and giving him the cold shoulder. At this point he was losing both SW and NK, and he took his rage out on his family. May seem to simple of an explanation, but that's how I logically see it...just my humble opinion. :)

Isn't parents not showing up for wedding an example of how he was brought up? I realize this was later in life but I believe this was through out his life ( narcissistic abuse). Emotionally abandonment when he wasn't a "good" boy and didn't he wear a mask his entire life? Didn't his father have a drug problem? Didn't the agents of law think he was unusual and unique too or was that just them baiting him?

I have been researching the role of parents in cases where men murder their wives and/or wives and children, and it seems it in the vast majority of cases the parents forgive their sons and place the blame on the victims. Not all cases, but it is very common and it’s very shocking. I think that these men grow up in households where they feel that they can do no wrong in the eyes of their parents, or they hate their parents (overbearing parents) and they take their rage out on their wives. It’s very interesting but they are definitely not raised in a healthy environment. I am a mom of three sons, two of them are grown, and if my son killed his wife and children there would be no further contact. I certainly would not show up in the court room and tell him how much I loved him, or blame his wife. The parents are sick in the head!

Mary Smith. I cannot imagine going through, somehow enduring, such a horrific tragedy. If my grown son did such a thing I have no idea what I would do, maybe run through the streets screaming. I would probably be in disbelief, denial, for a while. I don't think I could stop loving my son. I feel for the Watts parents, I do.

@Crucibelle I watched a video of Shanann Watts praising Chris Watts a lot, stating that he was with her when she was "at her worst" and how wonderful he is and how grateful she is to have him, and so on, and red flags were waving at me like crazy. In a healthy relationship you don't have to praise your partner to the end of the world, you're allowed to criticise and disagree with your partner sometimes (even if you're wrong sometimes), and you're unlikely to believe that your partner is especially kind or benevolent for being with you - because of course you know you're good enough for someone to love you. I think that the Chris Watts case could be an excellent case study in DV and the horrible possible consequence of DV, but for some reason so many people persist in missing the point.

I appreciate the unbiased explanation for what may have been the psychological state of CW. It's not easy to answer questions given little evidence. I'm glad CW had the post-conviction interview, but because he lied a lot, he could be lying again for reasons we are not sure of. Thanks for the video, and hope it helps people think about this subject with better understanding and hopefully, prevention of future violent events. If CW had talked to anyone before these terrible actions or Shannan has noticed signs of a dangerous situation, and gotten to a safe place, things may have turned out much differently. I was in a difficult marriage to someone with NPD many years ago, and had an expert psychologist who helped me understand the dangers of my particular circumstances. She gave me advice on a few points that were more effective and safer ways to manage my situation. She even professionally engaged the assistance of my spouse's counselor as well in order to mitigate potentially adverse outcomes. I have heard you talk about a couple of these things in your videos, which were similar to mine and has helped in retrospect understand what could have been at play.

If you watch any interview with The Monster’s (my name for him) mom, it’s easy to see why - at least part if the reason - he could do what he did. (This is only my opinion) From interviews, it’s obvious that he was raised to think that the world revolved around him. He probably didn’t have any consequences for bad choices, bad behavior etc. Cindy raves & raves about how great he was at this & that. She also says how she didn’t like the way Shan’Ann treated the Monster. (Dear old mommy must not have seen all of the praise Shan’Ann posted about her killer - I mean husband - all over social media) Cindy said that Shan’Ann would ask him to do things around the house. (A wife asking her husband to help out around the house - OMG how dare she). That statement alone tells me that her precious son/Monster must have not had chores while growing up. He was a spoiled little Bas-tard who was raised to think that he could do no wrong. He was used to getting whatever he wanted - no matter how he got it. Mommy probably never punished him & covered his @$$ whenever he was caught by someone else. I can’t think of any other reason a father could look into his little girls eyes and squeeze the life out of her - so he could have what he wanted (the mistress). It’s a good thing Dear old mommy couldn’t cover his @$$ for that. I felt bad that she lost her granddaughters. But when she attacked Shan’Ann, that sadness went right out the window.

Completely agree. I think that his mother is a narcissist who raised him in such a way that he became a covert narcissist. (People talk of Shannan as having the control but I think he really controlled his family in subtle ways.) I think he fits the "control" type of familicide. He killed his family because he wanted to get a new life and they were standing in his way (in his sick, evil mind). I also think that the affair did cause the murders because he replaced Shannan and his family with Nicole as his narcissistic "supply".

CW family environment: dominant and controlling mother with aspects of narcissistic personality. Submissive father with no opinion of his own (changes according to circumstances) unstable with past drug abuse. CW in the interview surprisingly identifies himself with Frankie Rzucek and not with his own father(low role model) CW does not make references to friendship relationships during or after school periods, with the first significant relationship occurring at the age of 25, when he meets Shanann through the help of third parties. CW only friend is Mark and the whole current social circle is through Shanann. CW has difficulty taking initiative and expressing opinions and feels comfortable as a background figure in relationships. He is totally surprised when investigators reveal his friends' opinions about him. He is highly grateful that people show gratitude and appreciation. This shows me that CW is not very comfortable with explicit expression of feelings and maybe this was not introduced in a healthy way during his growth. CW shows a great need to be led, obediently. Inability to express his own opinion and highly suggestible. Internal conflicts between others and self-interest. The exceptionally clean and organized house shows need for structure and consequently inability to deal with unexpected situations.

The photograph Chris emailed to Shanann shortly before the murders depicting a 3 ft long doll he'd covered with a white sheet seemed to me to be a chilling forewarning of the horrors he planned to commit if she insisted upon returning to Colorado from North Carolina. Shanann's mother saw the photo and advised her daughter not to go back to Chris, but Shanann went anyway. Perhaps in his mind Chris was doing something noble in warning her that he would kill her and her children if she insisted on returning. After killing them he could reason that he'd tried to warn her, and she wouldn't listen, as usual. Thus she was ultimately responsible for their fates, not him. Thanks for your great vids, Dr! The thing that really strikes me is not so much the murders, but Chris' calm (one might even say relief) in knowing that he will die in prison.

To me the true motive was based on the contradicting lies he was telling his wife and his girlfriend; he told his girlfriend that he and his wife had ceased sleeping together, and were already going through a divorce, in addition to selling the family home. His wife was pregnant. His girlfriend was going to find out, and ultimately he was probably not only going to lose his girlfriend, but lose his wife too. And his wife leaving him would have meant a new financial burden, not to mention a change in how he saw his kids, and when. It was going to change all of the selfish parts of his life, and ultimately cost him money, and both relationships he had. He killed her to cover that up. Why he killed his children I struggle with, but my only guess is that he didn't want to be a single parent with them, because they would have also gotten in the way of the lifestyle he wanted to have. It is really sad. He had a life many would have loved to have; a beautiful, funny, intelligent, supportive wife who would stand by him no matter what. Two adorable little girls, and a son on the way. A beautiful home. A great job. But his lies, his selfishness, his shitty behavior, it was all going to come crashing down on him. So he destroyed it first. He destroyed every bit of it. He robbed that beautiful woman of a chance to see her children grow up, he robbed those children of a chance to grow up and have their own lives, he robbed everyone around them of his family. He is a snake in disguise, but the veil has been lifted. Everyone can see who he really is. A sad, scared, pathetic piece of shit who couldn't see how good he had it, and then MURDERED a PREGNANT woman and two toddlers. Fucking wow. Just.... Wow.

Thank you for this elaborate depiction of different familicide types. I did get the impression from the information available that in the case of Watts, the wife was dominating him in the relationship and that this aspect of feeling powerless might have fueled him snapping as well as starting an affair, more or less the time his wife got pregnant, something he might have not wanted (also if faking happiness vor the home video). My experience is that people feeling powerless or having low self-esteem very often are pathological liars, which seems to be the case also her. The fact that Watts also coldly killed his kids indicates that he didn't bound with them, merely connected them to his wife and his wife might have used them as well as the 3. pregnancy (which she probably decided on alone) to put tension on him and even as she did (maybe not the first time) to blackmail him. The private home videos availabe gave me an uncomfortable feeling of a dysfunctional family....but see for yourself. Your opinion would be very much welcome. Cheers.
