March Madness

4 жыл бұрын

Michigan's Fab Five earned another shot at the national title in 1993. In one of the most bizarre endings in NCAA tournament history, Michigan's Chris Webber called a timeout with 20 seconds remaining with the intention of setting up a potential game-winner against North Carolina. It backfired, however, when he learned that his team had zero timeouts remaining. Tournament MVP Donald Williams sank free throws to seal UNC's win.

He *wasn't* the same after this incident! This incident clearly followed him the rest of his life and continues to! And I don't believe social media would've really done anything to Webber that didn't happen anyway, because he *already* knew that this was a defining moment and that he would be judged for this for the rest of his life, and if the social media giants had existed back then, their presence probably does nothing more than *confirm* to Webber what he already was afraid of! Social media's major impact on events like this is that it allows people to say what they're *really* thinking and gives us a glimpse into the *true* mindsets of a lot of people. In a situation like this, it would've confirmed that they were all judging him and that he was basically going to be forever known for this mistake. Which brings me to, Webber pretty much *knew* that that's what people were thinking about him, and it affected him the rest of his career (so much so that he refuses to talk about this incident to this day)! I believe it's pretty safe to say that, even without social media, the effects you *normally* see social media have in today's world *happened* to Webber anyway even *without* social media existing at that time!

If these two teams played ten times, North Carolina wins eight times. They were more battle tested. They were almost equally as talented (also having high school All Americans at every position), yet more experienced. Lastly, had an infinity better coaching staff. Steve Fisher was probably a hall of fame coach by the time he was coaching Kawhi, but in 1993, he was clearly not in the class of Dean Smith. By the fourth game against each other, Dean would have totally figured out the Fab and be winning games by at least ten.

Right, if Jalen Rose had actually done his duty as the point guard - run all the way up to Webber to take the ball out of his hands. There wouldn't have been no reason for Webb to dribble it up the floor. Instead Jalen panicked when George Lynch up on him daring him to put it on the floor. Instead of dribbling Jalen passed it back to CWebb who pushed it up the floor & the rest is history.

This dude is a class act. He turns to the bench and said "Whatdya tell me to call a timeout??" The Caucasian coach throws his head back at the error, but the one in the brown blazer heard it and hushed cuz he knew it wasn't CWs fault fault. Someone said he was foolish to go right and get cornered but did you not see that had he come down the middle and attacked the basket, 3 of the 5 NC players were already there waiting to block that shot???? Plus, being frazzled cuz he knew he had gotten away with a walk--- Those 3 things really had him in a mental fog. It all happened so quickly. The Detroit side of him/ "no snitching" thing made him not bring up these points in the postgame interview, but Hunneyyy, I woulda sang like a canaryyyyyyy. At least hinted at it! Glad his career was stellar thereafter.

Obviously Webber calling the timeout was a horrible incident. But everyone says/thinks that Webber calling said timeout cost Michigan the game. It cost Michigan the opportunity to try and tie the game with a made 2pt FG or take the lead with a made 3pt FG. People think Michigan has the lead and the game was basically over before Webber called timeout. And the two technical free throws (plus the ball) enabled NC to miraculously win. Odds of Michigan even winning that game had Webber not called TO was like 15%. Michigan making a 2pt FG was a 50% chance and making a 3pt FG was a 30% (based on Michigan’s stats that year) Let’s assume Michigan opted for the tie. It’s a 50% chance they do make this shot to tie it up. But of course there would be ~ 3 seconds remaining (with North Carolina getting the ball at half court) and North Carolina still can win in regulation. Let’s assume NC had a 40% chance to make the game winning FG with 3 seconds left. So now Michigan is needs to mske the FG (50% chance) then needs NC to miss (60% chance they miss) then beat NC in overtime (50% chance). That’s a 15% likelihood they’d win had Webber not called the time out. If Michigan opted to hit a 3 pointer (30 chance they make it) to go up by 1 then they still NC to miss their last shot in the final 3 seconds (60% chance). So that’d a be an 18% likelihood chance of winning. Yes, bonehead play on Webber calling the timeout but they only a 1/7 chance to win before getting the technical. So why does everyone just assume had he not called the timeout then Michigan was going to win

Good analysis. Did you take Probability and Statistics as option?

Should of been reviewed and called a travel which would negate the technical because it should of been stopped on the travel.

No one discusses how Steve Fisher was always a terrible user of timeouts. There were MANY games in his coaching career where he left his teams with no TO’s in the final minute of games.
