Hi Chris. First off, more great playing. Awesome. Secondly, this episode really spoke to me as I'm the proud owner of a Tokai Les Paul Reborn gold top made in 1982. I stumbled across it about ten years ago, tried it out, and fell in love with it immediately, especially given I paid $800 Canadian for it. Mine doesn't have the original tailpiece as the original owner added a Bigsby to it (which he'd never do to a real Les Paul). Fantastic guitar that like yours, had the Tokai logo replaced with a Gibson one. It was really nice to see and hear yours played by someone infinitely more skilled than myself. Great video. First guitar i ever bought for myself was a 1975 MANN 'Les Paul' black beauty copy of the same era and quality. To this day, it still gives every other LP I've tried a run for its money. True to the fretless wonder name, plays absolutely beautifully, and essentially never needs any work. I can go months without touching it and it feels like a dream when i go back to it. Great find, Chris! Hope you enjoy :)

See, now I've also got an '80 EGF-1200 but for some strange reason I can't make it sound like that.. definitely not my lack of ridiculous skill, no sireeBob. Stunning playing as ever man.

Tim Shaw was the first to try and replicate the original PAF pickups. He worked for Gibson in the late 70s through 80s (not sure of date he left). They tasked him with developing a PAF style pickup and he largely succeeded, al- though Gibson did not allot enough money to acquire original spec wiring and other materials. But he made do with what he had and today, his pickups from late 70s-mid 80s are worth serious money. I have an ‘82 LP Custom with them and it sounds amazing, the best of four I’ve owned and as good (though different) as the original ‘54 Custom i bought in 1964 for ... ready for this? ... $125.00!!! Sold it in ‘68 for &400.00 to buy an ES 345, which was and still is (wherever she may be) the guitar I always wanted. Such is life ...

Interesting thing is that Chris sounds like Chris on every guitar he plays. I’m not knocking it, he’s great, but all his drive sounds sound gloriously like him, no matter if it’s a strat, revstar or a Les Paul. Not a big difference but it still sounds good.

You play so beautifully and very emotive - it might sound odd but there's something of Sam Cooke in there, like he sung mainly major scale notes but it still sounded really bluesy cos of his slides and inflections. Amos Garret had a bit of that too but you're drenched in it; terrific, impressed.

Sounds awesome Chris. I think you would really enjoy a TS-10. Good investment piece as well. I picked one up a few months back and they definitely have a slightly different tone to them the the TS-9 and 808. I really think you would enjoy it and sound awesome playing it especially with the Klon as a boost and the Cali 76.

CB. Thanks for sharing the story of your bond with that LP. I can imagine the internal thoughts after folks make spotter comments about what they see ("fake"). I hear and see nothing but authenticity in you tone and musicianship with that instrument so I enjoyed that it inspires you to play for me and everyone else you share your gifts with. Thank you. Here's my question that said (from a genuinely curious guitar player place). I played acoustic forever because it's what I had and as I lost my hearing I learned to recline with my skull and cheek bones onto the neck and headstock to hear tones. My playing was to Dire Straits on tape and eventually CD and now KZfaq where I can see. Now that I can afford an amp and other guitars I have become tone conscious on electric while retaining 30 years of touch dynamic training with my hearing loss. That leads me to a focus on setup. I can hear pickup height and attack dynamic changes as thin vs fat as it is described. Those pickups in this guitar are unique and amazing. Why are they set into the surrounds so low/flush and what is the pickup pole piece height to strings. That guitar action is set very low unless I am mistaken or is it just that the pickups are set low? Are they high or low output vs other PAFs? The bar isn't end wrapped so I reason the bridge height is fine and the saddle break angles are good without touching the bridge. Just curious why the pickups are low for you. The sound works great and the dynamics are amazing with your touch and fingerstyle. As a larger guy I might set a guitar up this way to play with a lighter hand with the amp cranked to get a huge range with touch dynamics but I have to have chime so I hate losing that if I set my pups too low. Sorry for the dissertation. I'm going to go sink my pups now... Just to try it out... Down to the waterline.

I have an old 70s Maison LP burst, set with an epiphone 500k pot wiring harness, and a pair of Vanson 57 pups... straight to a Fender Champion 100 in the tweed set... sounds amazing. I can understand things like Quality Control and materials and Brands... but all the rest is really a gimmick. You can get a very inspiring instrument out of someone’s so-called “piece of trash “.... just my take on this. Again, Chris... Amazing set of hands and heart.

That is *exactly* how a Les Paul should sound!!

I get the most satisfaction from my LPX especially nowadays during the latest makeover over many years of other makeovers since receiving it for my 15th birthday. Only Gibson element on it is the TP6 tailpiece and it's had fair share of cheap aftermarket humbuckers and the G&B Golden Age Parson Street A2 neck humbucker is about as close to an actual '59 Les Paul as I'll ever get and I'm good with that; by the way your 'burst' sounds very good!

I think your best advice, is not to copy you, but try to get inside your head, in the end imitation is the best flattery, but true joy, is the cross pollination of many influences, throw them into the forge and hammer out your sound, technique, and move the art forward. I thank you for elevating the guitar uniquely.

It is a nice guitar with a good bit of history. I really think that the differences between many guitars is less than what we'd think. This Greco proves that. Thanks Chris for the fun video!
