With all of the rave and hype about this Fujifilm camera on KZfaq, Tiktok, and Instagram, I straight up wanted to hate this camera purely on its explosive popularity. I've used Fuji cameras before like the X-T2, and I do enjoy the cameras + raw files. As a film photographer too, I got tired of people trying to emulate the medium.
However, I will say....after actually playing with the Fuji X100V, those reviews were right. This camera is actually very good and NOT over hyped.

I got mine in October 2022, I had always liked Fuji colors so this was my entry into their system. I fell in love with creating recipes that I can do amazing SOOC Jpegs for social media. The images are sharp and colorful. I love the Fuji system so much I just got a X-H1 last week and one lens to start. I have a Canon R6 with heavy AF glass so it’s nice to have a lighter rig and I am having fun shooting landscapes again.

One thing to remember about the WCL and TCL lenses for the X100 series is the they only change the AOV, you do not get any change in DoF.

Seconded from another X100V owner here. Especially since there's some great other options if you can't find one - like the XE4 with an 18mm f/2 and little EFX20 box flash is pretty special, I think.

So, I shoot raw, take that into account when you read this: Once I found DxO PhotoLab, I really stopped worrying about what "look" my camera had baked in...yes even CCD (to a point). DxO PhotoLab does an AMAZING job of color science and has ALL the profiles, even Fuji. My Leica M240 can look like my Sony A99, and vice-versa, or like a Hassy X1 in color science. My point: Stop worrying about the look of a camera's built-in profile and find a camera that works best for how you create.

Oh and that loading when you were shooting was likely because the “clarity” option was on. That slows down the camera a lot. Even my X-T5 slows down with that on. EDIT: commented before I saw other had already mentioned this. Leaving my comment here just in case it helps with the algorithm though.

I wish they would change the lens to a true range finder style lens with distance markers in order to use this in manual mode. Would love to use proper zone focusing with this camera.
@mulkosilma
@mulkosilma Жыл бұрын
You can do that, or at least mimic it, by enabling focus distance scale in evf/ovf settings and adding focus distance scale to film format basis. I've used that for manual / zone focusing and it has worked very good. That being said, I would also gladly take true manual focusing capability with distance and aperture markings in the lens instead of focus-by-wire focusing.
@JLStreetDoc
@JLStreetDoc Жыл бұрын
@@mulkosilma right. I don’t want mimic it. I want true hard stops and a scale. They would have to make it a bit longer and through a focus tab on there too.

It’s a great camera but not for everybody. Indeed it is an amazing tool for street photography. The fact you have the hyperfocals in the viewfinder tells you a lot about the camera. Also as someone else was pointing, you need to turn off image preview. I use mine mostly in raw and I use the camera profiles as a starting point for editing. The thing is jpg is 8bit dynamic range and raw is 14bit, so… for practical purposes, any camera using jpg trash a lot of information. Plus, raw editing is a lot more like darkroom editing and jpg only like “just let the lab do it for you”. *Actually the hype is kind of contradictory because it is a niche camera, that’s why many KZfaqrs buy and sell it almost immediately.

YES. Thank you for saying that the recipes are overcooked. I have been sharing a lot of real film examples with the community to try and get us away from the muddy green, shot through a dirty windshield look. I don't think people in the community have too much experience with film, so a lot of the major recipe creators get it super wrong in terms of colour and tone matching. The biggest offenders are Ektar, Ektachrome, and Portra recipes. They always look super muted and overcooked, despite being rich vibrant, versatile film stocks. They get Kodachrome mostly right though, since Classic Chrome is built for that by Fujifilm. I think you're one of the only creators on YT with this critique about recipes rn. Everybody else is taking muted brown photos like they've got a chocolate filter on, and loving it. It's pretty misleading to the newcomers from film tbh.
@orestes1984
@orestes1984 Жыл бұрын
Oh it looks like film, because the sensor is actually tiny, and uses an xtrans sensor. But then, it's digital... Just no, you're creating nothing.... the problem with digital is that it's just 1s and 0s. The problem with simulation is exactly that. If you know what film looks like nothing it produces looks real.
@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures
@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures Жыл бұрын
@@orestes1984 I can definitely see where you're coming from. I shoot Fuji digital because I can't afford film. But all the images I do like from my Fuji I make sure I print. I don't feel an image is alive unless it's there on a negative, slide or lovely print - something I can hold.
@Grumpygrumpo
@Grumpygrumpo Жыл бұрын
@@orestes1984 the problem with film is it looks a certain way out of the box and that’s inaccurate as well.
@orestes1984
@orestes1984 Жыл бұрын
@@Grumpygrumpo there's nothing inaccurate about film. It's all about how you do the color timing. Negative film doesn't look like anything out of the box... You might be confused with slide film. Both film and digital can be quite accurate, it's just easier to achieve colour accuracy out of the box with digital cameras. The major thing with film is really that you are using ink (dye) which gives it a painterly look when you see a film recorded on film, that can't be replicated no matter how many LUTs or simulations you have.
@TheWutangclan1995
@TheWutangclan1995 Жыл бұрын
I agree with the colors being over cooked. Had a Fuji xpro 3 and tried the recipes but disliked the way it looked out of the camera. If there’s one work around I’ve found when it comes to film, it is bulk loading black and white or vision 3.

The bokeh issue is pretty well documented. Anything above 1/1600 give it the weird shape due to leaf shutter. Probably affects other cameras too.
@taylorruss
@taylorruss Жыл бұрын
The X100F used to limit shutter to 1/1000 when wide open at f2, but for whatever reason the V doesn't (this limitation was the original reasoning for the ND, as the leaf shutter couldn't clear the full opening of f2 at those higher speeds). So I'd definitely agree it's just an artifact of the leaf shutter not being able to properly keep up without this built-in limiter that the F had.

Agreed, the buffering when you've set your own profile is ridiculous and prevents me using those features because they slow you down so much. The other thing is that calling their jpeg presets 'film simulations' when they are literally the same as any other manufacturers jpeg presets is one of the biggest cons/greatest marketing schemes I've ever seen.

And Chris, as a BW film shooter (mainly Tri-X and BW400CN) that loves his M240 A LOT, I've spent a long time on a quest to get my digital files to more of a "film" look. To me that's removing some of the sterile and sharp (by lens or by some PShop actions I've found by Nick Bedford) and adding some interpretations of halation effects that happen (specifically Tri-X), and yes, adding DxO FilmPack 6's Tri-X simulation. It's still not quite film, but to me it bridges the gap of what I want from film AND don't like about digital.
