Historically, Hamtramck was a strong Polish community. Polish immigrants flocked towards Detroit back in the day for the automotive jobs. Overtime, the large Polish population moved towards the suburbs, and today, Hamtramck is mostly made up of Middle-easterners. There are other large cultural groups in Hamtramck from Ukraine and Bangladesh. With all of these ethnic groups living in this small 2 square mile community, Hamtramck has a great selection of ethnic restaurants. Live music events are held in Hamtramck where you can hear music from all over the world. On the flip side, nearly half of all the cities residents are living in poverty, and the crime rates are on the higher end.

The city is so clean. I was there a year ago and even the ally ways are swept and trash is in containers. Being of Polish heritage I know that the Polish people value keeping their yards and city clean. This is also true for the newer immigrants to the city. So many times poverty is equated with dirty streets and yards. Not so in Hamtramck. Proud of this little city.

Thanks for the memories. My mom & I used to take the bus into Hamtramck & spend the day walking down Jo's Campeau shopping. Bought my senior class ring there. My Grandma lived on Sobieski & attended Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church. The houses & neighborhoods look pretty much like I remember. At one time, Polish was taught in all the schools. There was a young black man riding on the bus who overheard two ladies speaking derogatorically about him. Imagine their surprise when he got off the bus & wished them a good day in Polish. At least that's the story I heard.

I'm amazed at the cleanliness and upkeep of all the houses, streets, parks, and buildings! With a higher poverty rate than Detroit proper, one would think that Hamtramck would be even more bombed out, abandoned, and squalid... like Highland Park. It shows that even if you're a poor town, you can still run a tight ship.

I lived in Hamtramck for several years and my ex husband still does and one of my adult sons as well. Hamtramck is very well-kept. Although it has a high crime rate, the people look out for each other. Neighbors pay attention to people in the neighborhood who don't live there, or when things don't look right. The Hamtramck police department has a great response time. Honestly, if it was closer to where I work I wouldn't mind living there again. Even after the tornado in 1997, the people were immediately helping each other.

Born and raised in Hamtramck's south side, left around 1998 but continued working there until 2002 when the company I worked for but shall not name closed down their Hamtramck facility. Was always a love/dislike relationship with the city. I loved it but also wanted out to find my path. As with any place you go to it has its pros and cons. Good to see the city has made some drastic improvements since I was last there in the early 2000s. I wonder if they still hold the Tuesday night brawls in the city council chambers, those were always fun to watch on local cable before the days of youtube. Growing up there I loved the diversity, and if I was curious about another culture there was always a neighbor or schoolmate to answer my questions without feeling offended. And being such a small city it was very easily walkable and shops for just about anything.

My grandparents lived on Faber. My grandmother moved into the house when she was 3 (from Delray). My great grandfather put indoor plumbing in the house. It had an outhouse in the backyard. When my grandparents got married My grandfather moved in and then later bought the house from his father inlaw. My grandmother lived in that house for 76 years. I had the pleasure of growing up knowing my great grandfather. He also told me when he moved to Hamtramck Holbrook had a brook running next to it.

I wonder if Detroit's standing w.r.t. the number of Poles (3rd place) compared to New York and Chicago has anything to do with the availability of flights. There are direct/non-stop flights from Warsaw to New York and from Warsaw to Chicago. There are no direct/non-stop flights from Warsaw to Detroit. Someone who wants to travel from Warsaw to Detroit has to stop somewhere in Europe (often Frankfurt or Amsterdam) or in New York/Chicago and then board a second flight. As a result, perhaps, New York and Chicago continue to get new immigrants, and the Polish neighborhoods retain a high concentration of Poles, while Detroit might not get as many new immigrants, so the concentration decreases.

I consider Hamtramck to be my home town because I lived there from 1996 till 2010 on and off. I haven’t lived there since 2010 so I can’t speak on it now but it was a tough place to grow up. Most of my friends dropped out of high school, including myself.

Hamtramck is a city that parts of Detroit used to be in terms of density. Hamtramck's population density is about 10,000 people per square mile compares to Chicago's population density of 11,750 for example. Hamtramck's population growth has also also benefited from immigration compared to Highland Park which I'm sure a future video is coming for that.

Thanks for the video. However I see why you get some negative comments. You’re missing a lot of historical facts and places. You even missed a whole section of the city in your drive by tour. A suggestion to you is to find a life long resident or former resident to give you some insights. I lived there in the 60’s till the late 80’s. It was a vibrant community. The polish citizens were know for keeping their home and lawns in tip top shape. All neighborhoods were nice with a serious community interaction in each ethnic area. I could go on, but you should make a comment that you’re just providing information from your own late comer view point. This would help your videos not come across as just negative statements about a once proud community.

It all depends on what the fathers do on behalf of their families. Many in Detroit, don't stick around. Detroit started going down when fathers were allowed to legitimize hanging out on street corners while their children suffered and struggled to stay alive.

I lived in Chicago for a short period of time and they have a Polish population I have tried polish pastries they are good. Chicago isn't a good place for people who are struggling with homelessness. This city is perfect for Muslims I'm partially Afghan so I feel like I could make it. Detroit does have problems historically with gun violence

I wonder to what degree the crime rate is affected by the responsiveness of police. Obviously the place has its problems, but if you know that calling the cops will actually result in them showing up, you're probably a lot more likely to report a crime.
@Anderson99999
@Anderson99999 Жыл бұрын
That is a major difference. I lived in Hamtramck from 97-04 and the cops would show up right away when called. When I lived in Detroit in the brightmoor area cops would take hours to days to respond and even had times where no one showed up at all.

After seeing Detroit outside of the Woodward corridor, Hamtramck looks good. Worth noting -- whatever you say about Islam it has some very conservative family values. No booze? Much crime and domestic violence has alcohol as a lubricant or fuel. Alcohol is a big waste of money for poor people and as such creates hardships. Islam is sympathetic to small business, which is one of the most reliable escapes from poverty.

I was born in St. Francis Hospital in 1954 which is now the City Hall. I graduated from St.Florian and have a lot of good memories in the city but also some bad ones. I was robbed by two guys at Keyworth Stadium in 1970. One had a straight razor and the other a baseball bat and they also slashed my tires on my bike. My Father was shot and killed on Jos. Campau in 1981 and it took an ambulance 20 minutes to get to him and take him to the hospital where he passed.

My Grandparents on both sides settled here after coming from Poland. On the same Ship. As teenagers. Some Polish b still live in “Pole “ town. One elder lady was running for Mayor. FINALY she got the courage after all those yrs living there. Went door to door. Talked to many Lady’s. And still the young man became Mayor all due to his Religion and NO experience.. Shameful.
