Why Your Golf Swing Needs THIS Unexpected Key Move

In this lesson I wanted to share a simple solution to a problem that i have been seeing quite a bit recently with the students I have been working with.
Many of these had steep swings, over the top moves are were cutting across the golf ball at impact, they all had 1 common mistake in transition. Over the years many golfers have been told that the 'arms' are bad when it comes to the golf swing and you should focus more on the body and the bigger muscles...... it was that exact concept that was hurting these golfers.
In this lesson I show you exactly what the arms should be doing and give you a really simple and easy way of training this into your swing. The students that I showed this to all saw instant results with better downswings and better shots, if it helped them I know it can help you too
As always i'm keen to hear your thoughts so drop down below and let me know if you have any thoughts or questions

I watched this video several weeks ago several times in the evening, watched it again the next morning before leaving for the golf course. And yes I had a very good day off the tee and in the fairways, I now watch it several time a week to reinforce into my mid 70's year old mind what I need to do, It's been a very good last two weeks on the course. Thank you.

Chris, I am so grateful for your instructional videos. They are so helpful and insightful. As a physician and older golfer, I see some of the instruction by others online that seem more likely to cause injuries to us mere mortals. Your drills to get hand/arm speed early in the downswing are fantastic. All of your videos are amazingly helpful, easy to understand and follow. I just wish you were closer, so I could take lessons with you in person. Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration!!!

I've been watching some of the Martin Ayers, John Hensby, Steve Elkington KZfaq content over the last few days. It isn't the easiest to follow, but I've been trying very hard ! One of the things they talk about is dumping the club, which I assumed to be as stated. However, the explanation of exactly what to do wasn't clear. Then suddenly this video popped up, and I have to say a big thank you to Chris for his perfectly clear explanation and demonstration of what I believe I've been trying to decipher. This is just so helpful - clear visual and verbal advice.

Hi Chris, Thanks much for your video on SHALLOWING THE CLUB. I have been battling bad shots the last couple of years going from a 4 to an 8 index while trying to change my swing. My problem has been EARLY EXTENSION, but you brought to light the issue about shallowing the club with hands and right arm INDEPENDENTLY of the body from the top - this was the key for me. Also, the issue of forward bend at the transition causing the club to tip over early truly helped. I have had a couple of very encouraging practice sessions (good compression/high trajectory/slight draws) while realizing the more forward bend I achieved during the transition the more I needed to shallow out the shaft to compensate (I was using my body to shallow out the club). I'm 67 years old and was a scratch in my youth. I was fortunate to have a great teacher - a very old professional that learned to teach from the great Tommy Armour. This move from the top was very reminiscent of what he told me over 50 years ago, only he described it as trying to hit the side of my right foot with the club head - a very extreme move with extremely positive results. Another thought was to try and hit the ball with the BACK of the clubhead - pretty wild, huh? Hoping to have a video lesson with you in the near future. All the best, Ned

This is a great video, issue I have I think is crossing the line at the top of backswing. Which when I do something like this means the club head is ahead of the hands promoting the out to in path. Its not an outswing as such. Hopefully with the visual and contact aid of hitting an impact bag it will me bring the clubhead down more in line with shaft if not slightly behind. Any videos on why you cross the target line at top of swing would be helpful

Great video. That’s why it’s called “down swing” not out swing. As most amateur golfers have so much swing through. I know my self on the downswing I think about rotation and start the downswing with lower body and hip first. End up with the issue u have on this video, ball go out to the right.

I think this could the bit I've been looking for. I struggled with an overly aggressive downswing for ages, then it clicked one day when I decided to take a fuller slower backswing. This calmed me down but I also found the "sling" action and for a few weeks I was much improved, and it felt great. Then I suddenly couldn't maintain it, esp on the course, and I think I tense up too much and then use arms and not much shoulder turn. This drill looks like it could fix a lot as I think I've been starting my downswing with my body turn. (I convinced myself that turning my body first and feeling the arms/club lag behind was the right thing, but your vid suggests I got that wrong.... Cheers

Ive been watching monte scheinblum for a while and he talks about this alot. Research (apparently- i havent delved into it) says the hips lead the arms by 0.3 seconds and the earlier people try to use their arms, the better the relationship between hips and arms is. Us hackers often think we're using our arms too much and end up spinning out even more 🤦‍♂️ ive had great success with this type of drill and can hit effortless rockets. As usual, i end up straying and losing it for a bit. When i come back to this type of drill it always helps! Got a round booked tomorrow and this has just reminded me that this will be my only swing thought tomorrow 👍

Chris, I had to come back on here regarding this video, having tried it out today. Wow! I realised that all along my "feel" has been to swing the club - collect the ball - and try to follow through as an afterthought. It only clicked today once I fully realised that my main instinct has to be that it's the TURN that helps you strike the ball, not the arm swing. It's changed my whole thinking - still not perfect but I feel like I'm now on the right path. I've been told previously to try and "rake the wall behind" in order to get the right plane but that just felt weird. I really feel I've turned a corner..! Cheers

Didn't even have to finish watching and knew right from the start that this is one of the main problems why we don't get our club and hands at the front leg at impact along with coming over the top even if it's only slightly. This morning I finally saw why I couldn't get to that position by dissecting Tigers younger self. I saw his arms move 1st, while I was moving my hips and shoulder along with the arms as 1 piece. Took me a while to get my arms to function independently for the 1st move, but eventually got it. Now that I see this drill it should be much easier to program myself for that move 1st. Nice

Great video, Chris. I've seen Rory McIlroy do this pump drill on the practice tee as well. You mentioned that the hands slow down somewhere between 7 and 6 o'clock. This is not something that happens as a by-product and not intentional, correct? I'd hate to think that one has to focus on slowing down the hands while only having .25 of a second to do it.

This is a work in progress for me. I am a self taught golfer who has been able to hit 3 wood further than driver and driver would sometime dribble just over 200 yards with ball speeds of 134. At the range yesterday I managed a 148 ball speed and 240 with driver - but only twice out of 50!!. The remainder were 134-136 range but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I really needed this video to show when to make the turn… I think. Would be really useful (for me at least) if there was an indicator of where the driver face should be pointing at say 3-4 points in the downswing before bag impact?

Hi Chris, I'm a little confused. In this drill do I transfer weight to my lead side before or after my hands go down?
@Costigs01
@Costigs01 2 ай бұрын
When you do it correctly, it's almost impossible not to transfer your weight naturally at the correct time. The weight of the club will make you want to go backwards a bit and so your body will automatically want to shift weight to your lead side - you have to trust it, it took me a while after watching monte sheinblum no turn cast videos but focusing on the arms makes you want to shift naturally. Hope this helps 👍
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 2 ай бұрын
In the drill no need to move the weight, it’s just to highlight what the arms do relative to the body. In the full swing you can go ahead and shift and turn like you would normally but the drill can be done without any weight shift

This is such an important concept that OTT slicers need to understand. Watch any professional golfer's swing and you will see this lowering of the hands initiate the downswing, not the shoulders turning. Keep your back to the target and drop the hands.

Great lesson again thanks Chris but I’m a little confused. I thought you’ve taught that the whoosh sound, being the fast point of your hands in the swing, was at 5 to 4 o’clock (if looking at the front of you) now you’ve said that the fastest point is at 8 to 7 o’clock. Does this mean that the hands slow down and the wrists take over at level position, allowing for the speed boat- water skier effect to take place? I do hope this lesson, doesn’t affect my handicap anymore, things are getting pretty tough for an old fella on 9 😅😅
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 2 ай бұрын
Yes that’s exactly spot on, the arms slow to allow the club to accelerate so the clubs speed should max out at the ball but the arms max out way sooner. Imagine you are cracking a whip, the hands would slow down rapidly to then accelerate the end of the whip, similar concept here

Not in my experience as that’s the idea that can get some into some less than ideal positions. Ideally work the arms down, the body rotation is what causes the club to move out to the ball, if the idea is to get the club to the ball and then the body turns you will most likely come very steep and over the top

what are we calling this non casting .....casting move. i mean every thing in golf swing theory has a distinct name. so what is this called specifically. this is obviously the latest little swing fault fix that repairs the warped minds of all of us that have been told this is casting or throwing and is wrong. i even saw a youtuber state this fix is in fact casting and is anti lag theory because the angles of the wrist or lag are released to early. i saw this fix last week from another youtuber and tried to implement it. i do exactly as you describe. pinning left arm against the chest and forcing the upper body to turn. With this I get the right shoulder pushing out over the ball syndrome. i find it harder to implement in clubs 7 iron and below. 5 iron actually feels like the ball is just popping off the face. I do not get the same sensation or improvement yet in my other clubs but can kinda feel it.
@cheemomugdoo799
@cheemomugdoo799 2 ай бұрын
Hopefully Chris will answer too, but this is a drill, you are dropping the hands and releasing the lag only, nothing else, there is no turn to the shoulders or hips. When that part of the swing is added to the turn, then the lag will release at the proper time. If you want to do this drill without releasing the lag you can, some people call that the pump drill.
@ChrisRyanGolf

Not got a name just yet, but I don’t think this is a new move, just one that I don’t think has been coached that well over the years. I’ve heard lots say that the arms should be passive, the body should do all the work and that’s just not the case…. Maybe I should come up with a name for it though 😁
@Costigs01
@Costigs01 2 ай бұрын
@@ChrisRyanGolfcan we call it the anti-cast cast? People have been indoctrinated to think that any form of angle release is a cast. Throwing towards the ball from the top is a 'cast' (clubhead taking the shortest route to the ball). Throwing away from the ball is actually good like you've demonstrated here (clubhead takes the longest possible route to the ball). Short cast = bad cast Long cast = anti cast The word cast has lost all meaning in my brain now 😅
