@@Hemifan4266 Will have to see about getting there. I suspect that the surge would have attenuated a great deal by the time it reached there, traveling across a greater distance. We live in Zone A, but I mentally rely upon the 1 mile of homes/trees/etc to slow a surge before getting here. YMMV!!!!

@@ChrisandNancyTravel I bussed a crew around after Irma and they stayed in Englewood, which I thought was pretty far! Tough to find rooms for all these guys, but back in '17 they were getting paid $96 an hr. and time and a half after 8 hrs. -- 15 hr. days 6-7 days a week for many. They rake in the dough and love these hurricane disasters. That crew spent 2 years on Katrina and one guy told me he bought his house cash just from Katrina money. The cost of these things is astronomical!

I camped on the beach some half a century ago in a trip w/ my mother (who slept in the car, lol). It was a lot more undeveloped then.

I suspect they (USCG?) will have to send an ATON crew to evaluate and consider repairs. The City of Sanibel now owns the Point Ybel tract and structures [structures are gone????] , although the tower is still operational under U.S. Coast Guard control.

I'm not sure that folks are ready to leave it either silent or to the lives and actions of flora and fauna from the sea and shore. People are part of creation as well. Sanibel will come back. The losses from those living/working there are very real and very painful. I am concerned that the Lighthouse is now quite exposed, with one leg gone.

@@barbaraspector6689 I believe it will happen again. I used to think the same about SF, CA. Everywhere has something, but admittedly, this one has quite a history of getting clobbered by hurricanes. "Since 1873, there have been over 50 tropical cyclones passing within 100 nautical miles of the Fort Myers area. Twenty of these storms have been hurricanes passing within 75 miles of Sanibel Island, each of which posed a significant threat to property and lives on the Island at some point in its life cycle" according to Google.

@@ChrisandNancyTravel We don't normally get direct hits, though. I was born and raised in Lee county. I've never seen anything like this, anywhere in Florida. We've had some really bad storms, but no flooding and destruction like this.

I think they will fix the missing leg of the lighthouse (one most inland from the Gulf). One concern is that the protective vegetation (gulf side) is gone, and beach is much closer to the structure. Would not be surprised if they don't look at moving the lighthouse further inland, as they've done for other lighthouses around the country over the decades and centuries.

Lisa I study and research anthropogenic climate change I just want to mention to you and everybody else here that Global ocean temperatures are on the rise. They are absorbing heat from the atmosphere at a frantic pace. Last year a total of 17 * 10 to the 22nd Joeles heat energy which is equivalent of five Hiroshima thermal nuclear bombs per second was absorbed by the world's oceans. Now the world's oceans covers 3/4 of the entire surface of the Earth so that may seem like a scary number but it's not however I do want to mention it is going up every single year since 1990. It's accelerating to a certain point since the year 2000. What does this mean for planet Earth what does this mean for Florida or the Caribbean or Europe or countries that surround the Indian Ocean? It actually does two things that are really critical and detrimental to human suffering. One due to the The Walker event if you can Google that it makes a lot of sense and the intensity and the direction of the trade winds it will cause horrific flooding on one side of an ocean and drought on the other side. That's just the thermal Dynamic nature of the Walker event. But the thing is with global temperatures on the rise, it's accelerating and intensifying the drought effects in various parts of planet Earth and it's also accelerating flash floods so what's happening is the energy is being in balance is concentrating too much in one location and not providing any moisture in another. And this Cycles back and forth every few years because right now La Nina is in its third cycle and the entire desert Southwest and all states above Texas and now it's stretching east of Texas is in drought. The same with all countries in the same latitudes in Europe. Take a look at all the major rivers in the United States. We're talking about the Colorado River the Rio Grande River going to New Mexico the Mississippi River all of these rivers are critically critically low. And practically every single major river in the southern half of Europe are also critically low. What blows me away is even the Yangtze River is 80% empty. This is all caused by La Nina but it's being supercharged by carbon dioxide emissions trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and being reabsorbed by the world's oceans. Every time you drive your car every time your friend your your family your neighbor your coworker whoever if it's a gas driven car the carbon dioxide leaves the tailpipe enters the atmosphere and is trapped in the atmosphere for 300 years. That CO2 could very well drift into another country and intensify their heat. What's the answer to this I know it's it's difficult we depend on fossil fuels for our transportation. But that's the whole idea of what climate change is all about it's carbon dioxide that effectively is preventing heat from escaping into space. Humans are actually endangering and threatening the very planet that they depend on. Scientists have been telling us for 40 years we need to reduce our Greenhouse emissions. I want to also say that 55 million years ago CO2 emissions was responsible for a mass extinction. 70% of all species on planet Earth died from extreme heat or extreme ocean acidification. All plant life and all invertebrate that could migrate into the Arctic. By the way I do want to mention while the United States is the number one leader of CO2 emissions over the last 50 years, China has surpassed us significantly. China puts out 10 . For a billion tons of CO2 per year in the United States is putting out about 5.3 billingtons last year total CO2 emissions last year was 36 billion tons caused by all countries. I feel Sanibel is still beautiful, but I am attracted to the wildness the island represents to me.. The buildings - maybe not so much.

I have likened it to a tornado's damage over a much larger area, or even scenes from a war zone. A military friend pointed out that war zones now have a more focused destruction than this, that this is, in some ways, much worse. That being said, the spirit of helpfulness and "army' of repairpeople is very encouraging.

Great question on the police cars. Maybe someone here knows? i remember the stormy morning the MV Summit Venture hit the Skyway bridge - that, too, was a lot of destruction.

Funny thing about the palms. These can be brought in as full grown trees, with root balls only 3-4feet in diameter.. The ficus, many pine, other trees and shrubs will take quite a while.
