After flying into Christchurch from Sydney the night before, I had heard a lot of good things about the Saturday Farmers Market at Riccarton. A short walk to the bus stop, and on to Metro Bus No:5 for the short trip to the Markets.
From the bus stop it is only a short walk to the grounds of Riccarton House & Bush, and the markets.
The food and produce on offer was amazing, with plenty to enjoy there, or to take home to make a gourmet meal.
The Christchurch Farmers’ Market has been operating since 2004 making it one of Canterbury’s original food markets.
The market is located under 100 year old trees and winds itself beside the Ilam Stream and alongside the 1856 Homestead and gardens towards the protected native bush ‘Puringamatou’.
Even as a visitor to the area, it is well worth a visit.

That looks very tempting. Good range of tucker and a lovely setting.

It was very difficult deciding what to try. Totally understandable based on how busy it was.

Nice clean streets, no graffiti, no unused bike lanes. Pleasant little farmers market. Ideal place to spend a morning browsing, having a light breakfast and buying a few souvenir’s. Take note Melbourne. This is how to do it.

There is lots of graffiti, but in designated areas, and considered street art. The farmers market was next level good. Everything home made or home grown. And some of the queues were testament as to just how good things were. And super easy to get to by Bus. Uber, Taxi or a comfortable 35-45 minute walk.

It was very quiet in the morning. Later on in the day there were more people out, but not like you see in other major cities. And whilst it was cool, the sun was out, and it was hardly cold compared to how low the temp can get once Winter fully kicks in.

Christchurch was busier prior to the earthquake in 2011. I live here and am still struck by all of the new buildings and infrastructure in the central city which many citizens of Chch don't take advantage of. We have an amazing transport hub, an extensive public library over 5 spacious floors, art gallery, riverside dining.. There are also many empty apartment buildings that were built to draw people back into city living, unfortunately unaffordable and used for short term stays rather than potential long-term city dwellers, but Christchurch is a beautiful city which I have grown to love over my 7 years living here ❤️

@@sandyrickard994 I used to work at Christchurch Airport at least once a month for many years before the Earthquake, and of all the airports in Australia & New Zealand, it was one of my favourites to work at (due to having to stay in the city 1-2 nights every visit). I will say though, it was upsetting seeing so much still to be rebuilt, or just vacant lots. The new library was next door to where I was staying (Novotel) and it will be somewhere I check out on my next visit. From talking to a few locals, that big exodus of generations of families that left after the 2nd earthquake has had a bigger effect than most would understand. Either way, I cannot wait to get back over there, I left it way too long between visits.
